    My job is to tell them how to cope if water gets up their nose and how to prevent it happening in the first place, which is the first thing I teach them how to do, takes 5 minutes and then it's never a problem again.

      Hi sq5. A most worthwhile activity indeed. I find a lot of people who don't 'get it' in 5 minutes. Sharing the info is easy but incorporating it takes a bit longer for most of my folks, especially my scared students. How is it that you present this skill to your students?

    How do you come down from the straight legs back float ? That's the difficult part when I try to keep my legs down my face goes back under the water and water goes through my nose and it makes it very difficult.

    • @perrychristenberry
      @perrychristenberry 10 дней назад

      Hi Zaneera-G4’s. That’s a really common challenge. The reason that happens is because your nose is still pointing up towards the ceiling when your face goes under. Here are some tricks. 1. Start by moving your chin to your chest, drop your rump toward the bottom of the pool and push your shoulders/chest forward. The goal here is to get your head straight up and down (with the top of your head pointing to the sky and your nose pointing straight ahead… where your feet used to be). Moving your head to that straight up and down position keeps water from going in your nose (unless of course you sniff). Then, if your head goes under, it does not matter because your nose is protected. Another way some students do this when they start learning is to hold their nose (or wear a clip) - that keeps their noses ‘dry’ and removes that discomfort from the picture. A lot of people are really scared about the balance changes that happen during the standing process and many can’t bend as a result of that fear. With clips or holding your nose, you can move through the return to standing slowly without the anxiety about your nose. If you stay curious about the balance in that standing process, you’ll learn what’s needed for you. Wishing you the best of success

    I am getting pretty okay with floating on my stomach. But i struggle with the recovery. It feels like I can not pull both of my legs forward towards my chest.

    • @perrychristenberry
      @perrychristenberry 17 дней назад

      Hi sincere248. You are not alone in your current predicament. Most people who struggle with this are not aware of where there legs are or are not comfortable enough with the float to navigate the motion and changes in balance created by the attempt to stand up. Here are a few things to try: practice floating (holding a wall or friend), then pulling your knees in and then extending your legs to your float again. If you cant feel this, you can lay on your back on land and hug your feet to your cheat. Feel your hits tuck under? Move the legs back-and-forth until it is comfortable. Many people struggling with recovery are not comfortable yet with their float or with their legs sinking slowly. I suggest you learn the recovery initially as a slow movement that you can later speed up as you get more comfortable with it. You can also try a ball float (again with a friend or close to something you can grab), which you do by floating, then pulling your knees in and hugging them to your chest with your arms. This, gives you a sense of the movement that happens when you’re trying to stand up. Your balance will change and your rock a little. If that’s too scary, work on your float until you’re comfortable with the ball float, and then take on recovery. Don’t rush. Take your time. Wishing you success at staying comfortable and aware throughout your swim journey.

    I’ve been swimming since October. I love it, and I’m getting good. I’ve also been working with a swim coach who taught me that it’s actually difficult to stay down under the water. That blew my mind. But the pool I swim in/take lessons in is a shallow water pool, and I still had the fear of the deep. Recently I’ve been feeling ready to tackle this fear head on. I watched a bunch of these videos last night, before my deep end buddy, 16 yo son and I headed for the deep end of another pool. I was determined to get over this fear once and for all. I felt nervous but also ready, due to all I’ve learned and my growing comfortability in the water. Welp, I came home feeling triumphant and on top of the world!! I was in the middle of 11 ft deep water, practiced treading and floating…and here’s the kicker…I JUMPED IN FROM THE SIDE THREE TIMES!!! I can’t believe I did that. I am 46 years old, and have NEVER jumped into deep water. Yall are doing gods work with these videos. Sir, your gift for coaching and teaching traveled through the interwebs, all the way up to upstate NY, and has made a huge difference in my life. Thank you.

    My legs start to sink when I am using the kickboard or edge of the pull during the floating exercise. What advice can you give me to use my chest to level me back in place to finish kicking? I am a very muscular man. Does this make sense?

    • @perrychristenberry1913
      @perrychristenberry1913 Месяц назад

      Hi 365tonkatruckfit2. That absolutely makes sense. Legs with a lot of muscle don't stay up without propulsion or a floating aid. It's just physics. Here are a few possibilities and options and we have a freestyle kicking video that makes these points and others here: ruclips.net/video/PyS3hkU1-is/видео.htmlsi=JSOn8uq2hTafmDkr The most common cause of sinking legs with our beginners happens because swimmers raise their head to look toward where they are going. As a rule, extending your neck to look ahead causes your legs to drop. If you look straight down to the bottom of the pool (or even tuck your chin), you'll likely see your legs move upwards, at least a little. The next most common thing I see has to do with stiff ankles. Some people purposely (or unconsciously) point or flex their feet while they kick. Some people lack the ankle flexibility to allow their feet to flex and point. Ankles that remain pointed or flexed do not make good kicks - and really fit people with lots of muscle need good kicks to keep their feet/legs/hips up. If you can't point and flex your feet/ankles comfortably and with a reasonable range of motion, their are videos on ankle flexibility exercises that can help. If you can point and flex with good range of movement, then make sure you ankles are loose and relaxed throughout the kick. The loose/relaxed ankle makes a huge different. Final point I think of at the moment: the kick has 2 parts: pushing your feet up and pushing your feet down. If you push your feet up harder (or with more surface area of your feet) than you push your feet down, then your legs will sink. If you can push your feet down harder (or with more surface area involved) than you push up, then your feet will rise. This is what happens naturally with floppy ankles. Feel the water on your feet as you kick. Does one motion move more water than the other? What happens when you change the pressure? For our adults, learning to kick is usually not a simple process learned the first time they try. It usually takes a while and I find it more try for those toward the 'sinker' side of the floating range, so don't lose heart. We encourage our sinkers to use fins when learning. Fins can help build range of motion where needed and can increase a swimmers feel for the water. We also video their kicks (because it's hard to see your feet while kicking behind you). If you just don't see progress, find a good coach and ask them to watch and give you pointers. And, there are a lot of RUclips videos on freestyle kicking that might flip the switch in your head that lets kicks make sense. BEST of luck on your swim journey!
