People who think that this is some sort of patriotic English hymn have no idea. William Blake wrote the words as the introduction to his epic poem ‘Milton’. Blake was a supporter of the French Revolution. He was arrested and charged with sedition ( though later released). For him, the “dark Satanic mills” were not just the mills of industrial Britain, but all means of oppression, including the church and the monarchy. The commonly sung version of his poem wrongly sings about “those dark satanic mills” rather than,as Blake wrote, “”these😢 dark satanic mills”. The satanic mills are still with us. Building Jerusalem in England’s green and pkeasant land is a hope for a utopian future, not a song of praise for England as it currently exists. Blake must be turning in his grave at how his words have been expropriated.

GSTK is a terrible national anthem. I have always felt our anthem should be either Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory. Oh, and why is Jerusalem not sung when the England football team are playing?

In my book, "GSTK" is UK's national anthem & "Jerusalem" is ENGLAND's national anthem.

The first verse questions the mythical history of England. The second doesn't answer the questions, but says instead that we should fight to make the country worthy of the myth. It's a radical a vision from William Blake. For Jerusalem to be accepted as England's national anthem, Conservative England needs to change radically.

I remember my mum singing it in the kitchen,when I was a small boy. We lived in Belgium, and had English relatives.

I’m English by birth, British by the grace of God. I agree, it’s not appropriate that the UK and England share an anthem. England’s should be Jerusalem, Land of Hope & Glory or Swing Low Sweet Chariot. GSTK should be an anthem purely for the UK, all of it.

There is no doubt that Jerusalem is beautiful. I believe that without exception the anthems of other countries are for those countries, ours is for a family, lineage and that should not be. I do not wish to sing an anthem for a family, I WANT to sing an anthem for my country. As far as I am concerned there are only two choices. "Jerusalem" and "I vow to thee my country." My preference is the latter as it clearly states MY country. Play either and whichever one you use puts fire in your belly and a remembrance of where we came from and what we did and gave to others.

Remember the history behind Jerusalem.... Don't let two tier Starmer who hates us all cancel out our history and culture

No such thing as a British monarch the union of the crowns 1606 never happened the Scottish crown is entirely separate the Scottish constitutional law is separate from English constitutional law . The people of scotland are sovereign not the the monarchy but in England the monarchy is sovereign .Britain is not a country its a union of Parliaments not a union of territory . And as for calling god save the king the British national anthem this was decided by english government with the line rebellious scots to crush . Do you evne know how scotland and England United un Parliaments do you realise it was NOT a democratic vote by the people of scotland . That is a beautiful song. I always thought the US national anthem is one of the best in the world, but this song would make a great national anthem for England. Much better than a song idolizing monarchs. Funny thing is I know this tune very well from church; I didn’t know it was a song about England

To be honest, our national anthem is not really a national anthem at all, it's a royal anthem. It doesn't once mention the nation nor its people. Furthermore, as an atheist I will not take the hypocritical step of singing its first word. I long to have an anthem like Australia's where everybody can sing it wholeheartedly with gusto without compromise. Jerusalem is obviously for England , but please we need a new secular national anthem that even I can raise my voice to.

I think it’s beautiful .I love it. No different in Canada. We absolutely love the maple leaf forever. I think both of these should the countries anthem. Jerusalem for England ,maple leaf forever should be Canadas . It’s time we got back what is truly beautiful of each of these countries.

Love it, but for me God Save the King and I Vow to thee My Country are the two most preferable

I personally prefer "There'll Always Be an England", just needs shortening slightly and a couple of lyric changes, e.g. replace "empire" with "people" & "Britain" with "England". Sung right, it's got a bit more punch than Jerusalem, which don't get me wrong is nice, but just a little boring & lingering compared to "There'll Always Be an England" which is just far more punchy & direct.
