Also just to clarify on level 2 it is the lake cells around the perimeter of the lake that you want, including the ones that only touch on one corner
Hi could I get a copy of this excel sheet?
Hello, here is the link where you can find some free cases to practice: fmworldcup.com/product-category/case-studies/excel-esports-cases/
This one is really tough. Good job getting so far on a timed solve. You made some of the early questions and bonuses look far easier than me!
Thanks Hadyn! Still need to watch all the videos you guys are uploading, but will come to watch everything sooner or later! Just recorded a bunch of attempts when I got back from LV and now I am having some time off :)
I love how you stacked the different cells and were able to make that work quickly! That is super impressive! In the original solve I had each row being one cell and like a seperate turn and new counter/tracker column, and then did SUMIFS on it for the speed accumulation
That was also my plan B during the solve but I don't feel comfortable with that approach! I was very proud in the arena when finalizing that piece of work...and then excel just crashed ahahah
@@LorenzoFoti That must have been a scary moment 😱 - glad you got through despite the IT issues you faced
3:38 😂
I have heard someone took a good 10 minutes to realize the lambdas were not functioning :D
@@LorenzoFoti Oh no 🤣 who was that?
My bonus 4 there was a bit mean because it is really heavy calculation if you take it at face value - however if you think about the shapes the lines for level 3 draw out on the map there are only the full up/down lines, left/right lines are the two diagonals so there are not that many in the end!
Not sure I got what you mean here, how can I exclude some starting point/direction?
@@LorenzoFoti Since it is level 3 there are no crystals or snowmen, so it is just adding up the bananas rows/columns and a pair of diagonals Or you could just do the down arrow from the top half of the grid, right arrow from the left half, and the corresponding diagonals, and even just remove the checks for land and do it from column A/row 1, instead of all arrows on all lake cells
I'm not a huge fan of the bonus 3 that was added because it doesn't say if it means including diagonals or not, I guess in their defence the rest of the case always included diagonals
Yeah I agree, didn't even consider the possibility of excluding the diagonals, but I also agree it is always better to specify
Thanks Lorenzo! I think the slightly off error on the ice crystal one and a couple of the snowman ones was maybe about when you start on those things - will do more watching to try to check that and spot the other snowman ☃️ oness
I'm not sure it Lana hits an island in the final version but it could be this too, as there are more bananas past it potentially that I think these workings might pick up
One more idea before bed - might be the +1 not being needed when it ends from a snowman potentially, not checked any of these ideas fully
Yeah, still need to solve this properly, this was a very raw attempt when coming back from LV! I think I will post a proper solution in the future!
This one was tough! : ) I think I performed worse because the reading time was so long - I spent 20 minutes thinking about a model setup that would be flexible to add extra titans, and then had trouble implementing it in the time. I'm pretty sure I would have fared better by just taking each level as it came (but of course, that wouldn't have scaled well to the last few levels, and hindsight is 20/20...) I'll try to revisit this one next week!
I feel a bit guilty for that because I was the one having technical difficulties and stopping the whole arena before the start! My keyboard was not working (in the end I used the arena one), my lambda xls was not working. So I didn't even have the time to read the handout! Looking forward to see your approach!
@@LorenzoFoti Ugh, that must have been stressful! 😩
@DimEarly definitely not the best start!!
Thank you for putting this out it was really enjoyable and informative for me to watch!😊
Thanks! Lana skating is coming soon!
On level 4 I think the missing ones are caused when something is going wrong with your M health when it links to the previous table, it looks like it could be linking to the health before the last attack on the previous row, rather than after it
As usual I am very into silly mistakes, I really need to find a way to avoid them!
@@LorenzoFoti My FMWC rounds usually go super well for the first 70m then 'forget to add 1' or something for the other 50 🤣
I think bonus 4 went wrong for missing the triggering of Dim's ability in the second battle (to halve Andrew's attack)
Damn, I knew it would have been better to write down a minimal logic as opposed to doing it out loud!
@@LorenzoFoti It was so cool seeing you do that because I hadn't thought of the divide approach and mental arithmetic approach at all!
17:00 The FMWC team put this question in I did not make myself a bonus answer 😭
😂
Ahah, they mentioned something like "take Harry's level 1, make it a level 7 and build 6 easier levels" :D
@@LorenzoFoti Watch out for my 2025 cases! 👀 They did throw out level 7 on both of these too ahaha
@@Harryjackgross I hope you’ll share the director’s cut at some point : )
@ Shared 😊
Sorry about that level 3 description! I should have fleshed out the example rules more when writing this and written all 7 levels to avoid the confusion on level 3, the FMWC team made some changes to align it with the other cases that resulted in that level 3 being made and they wouldn't have had to if I had started off more aligned!
Harry, no worries at all! I can only imagine how difficult is to write a case, and you are doing great at it!
Hi w.r.t the tournament, was just curious to know, how did you'll focus on the stage with so much noise etc - i saw many were wearing headphones - were you people listening to music etc or those were some noise cancelling headphones? were you allowed to use your own laptops or you had to use the workstations over there?
Hi! That was the though part, and I honestly underestimated it a lot. We were allowed to use our own headphones and listen to music, but it was not enough for me to find the right focus - resulting in posting non-updated answers during the live competition and getting knocked-out for that. At some point in the competition you have to use the PC of the arena, but you are allowed to plug your own keyboard and load your own LAMBDA functions.
@@LorenzoFoti it seems in addition to the excel skills, the in-person rounds have a lot to do with Adaptability as well (adjusting to the Arena PCs and the environment) ... nice of you to share the details and your experience ... thanks👍
😀 been waiting so eagerly for the recaps to start coming, so hungry for excel content after that! Thanks for the awesome speed! 🏎️🏎️
Hopefully you will not be disappointed for your cases... :)
I'm so going next year! Seemed like so much fun based on all I've seen and heard!
100% confirm! And hopefully every year will get better and better!
That question 5 ruined me in the real thing!
Well, Ironman is tough!!!!
Hah! Just did this one last night for the first time as well. Really good practice in the modeling side of excel.
And now we are back again in practice mode!
13:17 'Of course it is' 😂
:D
Nice work… for a home solve, at least ; ) This would have been a very risk approach if it were live - people started scoring the bonus points from quite early on (way before they solved all the levels, and even before they had time to think about good general strategies). I’m trying to get into that mindset as we gear up for Vegas…
You are 100% right! I need to actively switch into live game mode when it comes to bonus questions' management!
The dynamic is quite different in Vegas vs the qualifiers too… when it’s 1v1, the first few bonuses can easily be locked out in the first 10-30 seconds, but when multiple people can get the first few, there’s at least a little more breathing room… Of course, in Vegas you also have to watch your back - if you don’t rack up points in the first 5 minutes, you could be out! 😬
@@DimEarly yeah, but I am assuming that comes into play for day 3 only? LCQR and Day 2 look like they are independent solves without any real time interactions between scores/bonuses?
@ That’s what the LCQR was like last year, but I’m not sure what the plan is for day 2 this year… I guess it would be challenging to lock out bonuses with 64 players, and I don’t think there will be eliminations. On the other hand, we’re all going to be in the arena for it (not on our own machines) and it is being streamed, which probably means some kind of live scoreboard… so I guess anything is possible!
Good content
Hi Shang, thanks a lot! Consider subscribing if you didn't do so!
@LorenzoFoti I am already your subscriber
How do you build that kind of formulas to find next cells based on directions input
Hi Matrixjz, that is a LAMBDA formula, i.e. a custom formula you can create, name and recall every time you want. The idea behind that formula is to convert an arrow to the corresponding offsets, and apply them to the starting cell. Hope this was useful, I highly recommend to check out @DimEarly channel where you will find lots of info!
Nice work! I honestly thought the data table for B5 would crash your Excel - you must have a powerful computer! : )
I had the same fear :) Do you see a better approach except filtering out water cells beforehand? Because one could assume the cell is in the middle-ish part, but that's a big assumption
ottimi video, come sempre
Ti ringrazio!
You did really great man … keep up the great work in sharing your knowledge. You will get there for sure

Ciao Lorenzo, Si può avere il file ?
Ciao, certo, lo troverai appena disponibile sul sito di FMWC a questo link: fmworldcup.com/product-category/case-studies/excel-esports-cases/
Damn this is such a clean and nicely laid out solution, makes mine look a mess! So crazy to go out with such a high score, I will face Peter next so going to be very hard for me.
Thanks Hadyn. Hope you will have a great match vs Peter!
I know well how painful this is! I didn’t even score as well as this in 2022, but I did get knocked out with the second highest score across the whole round. You vs Peter was always going to be a bloodbath! I’m glad you’re going to be in Vegas anyway - looking forward to meeting in person at last! 13:47 You can also use the optional argument in TOCOL to scan by column - that would flatten them out in the right tie-breaker order. (I think sorting could actually break in an edge case, although it’s not likely - e.g. B16 would come before B2 but both be equally far from B9.)
Looking forward to meeting too! And btw nice spot of the edge case! Don't know why I decided that TOCOL with the standard row/col priority would have done the job...that's the nerves!
Thank you so much for creating these videos! I’ve learned a lot from your content, and it has really helped me improve my skills. Keep up the amazing work-looking forward to learning more from you!
Thank you, appreciate your feedback! Will for sure continue to share my journey!
without going into too much detail, I can see that the calculation for your Index 30 is wrong. it says 840 for a straight of 4 5 6 and ♣ which would be 4*6*5^4, also just a tip: If you want to filter on an array, you have to somehow get that into the structure of 1 Row N columns or N Columns and 1 row. Thats why you cant just = on more than one item. If you do it gets broadcasted, which doesnt work in FILTER. You could do something like ISNA or ISNUMBER with SEARCH, FIND, XMATCH or anything. more complex Filters with MAP, also work well in those situations.
Thanks for the insight Jean! End of the story, I was only missing the correct calculation of points, I was so focused in managing the hand management that I totally missed to account for the multiplier for each of the cards in the run!
3:04 When you find and replace by format from cell, it has to match the whole format - e.g. borders, font, etc. So it can be safer to just find the cell color if that’s what you really want to replace. (Maybe I’ll make a case some day where every cell in the map has a different font just to mess with people 😂) 1:00:27 Isn’t that within a few points of the top score? You’re a hard man to please! I’ll come back to watch L5 after I’ve got to try it myself…
Yeah, every time I do find/replace format I notice I am missing some cells (mostly borders). I need to polish this step in my workings. Indeed I am very hard to please, especially when I know I didn't perform at my best!!
Thanks for having me Lorenzo this was lots of fun!
I am very happy of this video! Thanks a lot for joining me in the making!
Auguri Lorenzo! Avete fatto un lavoro belissimo! (Congrats Lorenzo! You make a great Work!)

Thanks Dim! Well apparently you are going to be pleased by the new video out on Elliott's channel!
This was a great video, really cool to see all the stats!
Maybe we can do something more detailed on the stats!
Damn what a long and hard case! I admire your dedication to stick at it here.
Ahaah yeah, after lvl 1 to 3 and Lana I went into "model with no stress" mode and turned out to be veeery slow. Curious to see more effective approaches on that!
This was awesome!! You two should do a bracket breakdown
Ooops! Check out Elliott's channel!
Great to see awesome collabs in the community!
Ahah, be sure to check out the new one on Elliott's channel!
Lot of work! Great! As I saw in live session one of presenters told that he was able to solve the case in 2 hours and half! You are there! :) Good luck and watching for you in Final round! ;)
48:02 I’m getting in your head! ; ) 2:04:17 So much pain captured in that moment… why do we do this to ourselves? 😂 I’ll have to come back for the end later…
I thought for sure you were going to make it - bad luck! : /
I had a few second of deep frustration ahahaha I will have to go back and this and understand what I am missing!
I agree I really liked the storytelling of the case here. On the first part I had the same worry about the size of the table but did a few checks and looks like it was always 30 so I could reference the columns like normal. Funny we did the set up for the first half of the case exactly the same. Always a small error or lapse of thinking can cost you the case like for you the odd or even. Every case I feel there's something too so you're not alone there! Your pathfinder method for 5 is interesting, but seems time consuming compared to the way I did although my way was a bit manual. 6 was a very nice clean approach. Our approaches are actually very very similar in terms of how we think about solving the problems. I have my vid up if you're interested.
Yeah, it was totally unnecessary, a simple indirect of endpoint - indirect of startpoint would have worked! I will definitely have a look at your solution, thanks for the heads up!
11:58 For Level 3 I solve it into a single function like @DimEarly but lost lot of time. My function form Example3: =LET(tab;SORT(SORT(SORT(FILTER(tRez;tRez[Battle]=H120);3;1);5;1);6;-1);poz; XMATCH(G120;CHOOSECOLS(tab;3)); INDEX(CHOOSECOLS(tab;3);poz+1))
Very nice formula! I still feel 10x more confident in building expanded models rather than diving into big LET/LAMBDA anyway :)
@@LorenzoFoti yes is more time consuming to put all staff into a single cell. Good luck for next rounds!
15:34 If it makes you feel any better, I made the same very stupid decision! 😂 38:17 Every time I see you snip like this, I think ‘I should do that!’ - and then I forget to… 39:30 Go To -> Special -> Formula is your friend here!
It's incredible what the pressure can cause! And I definitely need to become proficient in tables and managing other excel tricks like the "go to"!
For Pitagora Theorem is an Excel function SUMSQ()
Didn't know about that...thanks!!
20:03 That TLOOKUP working with an array is pretty nifty… I might have to steal that! ; )
22:46 I recognize that reaction - when you can’t quite believe that you got a hard question our first time! 😂 It would be heartbreaking to build a model like this in the competition and only get half the points for the level because of an off-by-one bug!
I was on the edge of my seat wondering if you’d make it on L6! I kept thinking ‘no, he won’t be able to do it from here in the time’, then thinking ‘wait, he still might!’. I did L6 the way you suggested, modeling one string for each players hand and for the pot at the end of each round, but I think your way could also work. If you added a column for an index within each player (i.e. count the number of occurrences of the current player up to the current row), then sort by that and then by player, it wouldn’t be too hard to interlace them. It’s still *very* hard to get it all done in the 30 mins, but I think you were closer than you gave yourself credit for!
Ahah! You are right, but the double sort wasn't even close to my mind in that moment, and I am not sure I would be comfortable to implement that way even now! I already solved L6 modeling the hands of each player and the pot, I think if one had the guts to do that from the early levels it would have been doable in 30 minutes...with high risk of non completion and/or getting something wrong with a model that would be an overkill for the previous levels!
L_ReverseArray: =LAMBDA(Array;[horizontal];LET(C;COLUMNS(Array);R;ROWS(Array);H;IF(OR(ISOMITTED(horizontal);IFERROR(--horizontal=0;0));0;1);IF(H;CHOOSECOLS(Array;SEQUENCE(C;;C;-1));CHOOSEROWS(Array;SEQUENCE(R;;R;-1)))))
@@julianpoltl4221 wow! This is reversing only right?
@@LorenzoFoti Yes, by default it is reverse vertically, but it can also be reverse horizontally as an option + Arrays size doesn't matter.
@@julianpoltl4221 Thank you! I have added it to my library :)
@@julianpoltl4221 Nice function! I think if it were me, I’d be tempted to have 2 optional arguments, one each for vertical (defaults to TRUE) and horizontal (defaults to FALSE), so you have the option to flip both ways.
