Great video.
@@SimonsDroneChannel thank you!
Great contexts and clearly good research - you’ve got talent but I would still work on post production - remember the eyes don’t see all details if we move too fast and need time to adjust when you want to speed up the clip
@@thomasmozdzen007 thank you for your critique, I will take this onboard for next time. There’s just so much to squeeze into a short timeframe. Cheers 🍻
James, I am all for building HS2 and it should have been taken all the way up to Leeds and Manchester, and beyond if possible, however my issue is with the civil engineering and the fact that whilst HS2 Ltd claim they will revert all the land they have used for construction back to its original state we know in reality that no builder ever cleans up their mess when they leave a site, they will just cover over all their waste material and builders yards with a few mm of topsoil and call it restored. Its the same with all the other sites along the route, all these ponds they have created will just become stagnant pools when they go. There is little to no chance they will lift all the Tarmac they have laid in their builders yards and work compounds they will simply bury them under the material they have excavated from the tunnels. This is why so many people are complaining about the destruction they have caused. I am sure the railway will be a fantastic piece of engineering but its the things that will be hidden that will be the long time scar to the environment. I am not a tree hugger and I am a mechanical engineer so this is a view from the technical perspective.
Your perspective is spot on, it’s not going to be perfect, no project is 100% efficient, at the cost to the environment. I think there’s nothing more we can do as a collective, it’s gone too far along the line to can it. All I can do is report back to you all the progress of the developments from the air.
The ponds are attenuation ponds to store surface water run-off to reduce the amount of surface water draining into the drainage infrastructure. That's a lot of builders waste to bury. If the project was effectively managed the final account payment to the contractor would be withholding money until the rubble was removed. Maybe you are confusing contractors with builders.
@@TrevorWilliams-fq8mg I am not confusing builders with contractors, they are one and the same except HS2 contractors are building a railway and not a house. The whole industry works on the same premise do the minimum they can to get it signed off and don't clear up the waste they have created as that would reduce their profit margin. We recently had a3 mile bypass road constructed near us by one of the joint contractors working on HS2 and you should have seen the state they left the works sites in and the landscaping/ tree planting that they never finished because they had gone over budget and just walked away from the remainder of the job. The county council had to step in and pick up the cost to finish the job even to the point of making the street lighting work because the contractors had not connected it up
Having spent a working lifetime with national contractors I can categorically say there is a difference between a Contractor and a builder. A builder understands very little and works off the back of a cigarette packet.
@@cmclewee9518Not knowing anything about the highway contract you mention but it must have been a very poorly drafted contract if the council had to step-in and finish the job. Contracts have extention clauses written in them and a proper contract would have given the council powers to withhold release of the retention monies. Sounds like a weak council but that's no excuse.
This could be an interesting video but I'm afraid it made me dizzy byconstantly circling around. It covers an interesting area with the tunnel exits and their associated structures, the crossing of a canal and a now complete underbridge. It shows a lot but the constant circling spoils it.
@@Jamie92208 thank you for your comment and perspective
I always think when people talk about the "damage" to the countryside that a) you can never bake a cake without making a mess and b) how we have to pander to those who don't want it in their back yard. Take a look at Karl Vaughans latest video where you see the cutting taking shape and how you wont see the railway because of the cutting. All this so called damage that people talk about will be put right after they have moved off site and returned the countryside back to nature. Also, if we hadn't had to pander, this would have been a hell of a lot cheaper to build, but instead the spiralling costs mean, as always, us northerners get short changed again as the most important part of the build has been cancelled.
@@SeanDavies-u5t I agree with you, it’s not been easy for anyone either side of the debate. It is frustrating that the full concept has been scaled back. In my interview video with Wendover residents they shared some similar views to yours.
Are you aware that HS2 Ltd have already incurred numerous fines for multiple breaches of environmental issues? Thousands of trees planted along the route in Warwickshire where the vast majority perished due to lack of aftercare. The pollution of streams, rivers & other waterways with toxic chemicals. The bulldozing of mile upon mile of hedgerows containing nesting birds when they specifically promised to wait until the nesting season was over. HS2 is an environmental disaster of epic proportions & Britain's biggest infrastructure mistake in half a century.
Look at the country side getting done over for what. To get some place 15 min quicker. Bet lots of nice houses got knocked down for this rubbish to get built 😮
Thank you for your comment :)
Well, that's one way of showing that you are massively ignorant about what HS2 does (and it's not about speed). It's quite easy to get better informed about this vital project- maybe have a go?
@@nwcitroen2222 I will try my best! Thanks
I don't think ive ever watched an interview before where the format is: ask a question, get a "dont know", then the interviewer goes on to give his opinion as a factual answer to "inform" the interviewee before then asking her views on this "fact". Absolutely awful biased footage.
Thank you for your comment :)
Looking at this, I’ll forget high speed in the U.K. we are a small country,a 125 would have bone just as well.
Thank you for your comment :)
No, the UK is most definitely *not* a small country- the fact that we have many internal flight routes is more than sufficient evidence to disprove your daft assertion. In reality the original HS2 network isn't ambitious enough for this country's long distance transport needs.
12 cubic meters of the chikterns AONB with every scoop. Nice. Firstly why the heck didn't this line go out of the North of London where the natural route is. Secondly, rather than digging 8 million tons of Chiltern Area of outstanding natural beauty, why wasn't this tunneled for another 2 miles to protect the chiktern hills. There is no way tunneling would have been more expensive than the destruction of the countryside that is currently happening. Also the bit about the "meticulous" environmental management and the attention to "detail" is rubbish. This morning after rhe heavy rain and no grass to soakaway the water. It ran off the land at an incredible rate and flushed that same bright orange clay earth down all than lanes and caused a disaster to the A413 blow which flooded so badly it almost came to a standstill. Orange water was blasting down the asks of the lanes today like niagra falls as the rain simply washes straight off the surface and doesn't soak away. Rocks the size of footballs were all over the lanes leading down to the A413, that came from the HS2 site. It's an environmental disaster in every way. Work should be forcibly stopped until they spend a year putting in a proper water management solution to correct the ruination to the natural water flow that they have caused.
Why are getting all worked about this very unremarkable bit of the Chilterns? Somehow you have managed to be completely oblivious to the noisy A-road, the non-electrified railway with noisy diesel trains, and a shed load of massive electricity pylons. I detect another tedious NIMBY!
Do you think those earthworks and construction sites are permanent or something?? Christ, please take a break from sucking batteries to contemplate what the site will look like when completed....
Enormous extra expense ( of the order of £3 - 4 Billion I would surmise ) has been added to this HS2 project digging 16 miles of tunnels under the Chilterns. 99% of the locals have not been effected in any significant way ( the odd road diversion for a period perhaps !) A few ventilation structures on the surface have been necessary, that look no worse, than a farmers hayshed. Even these have been folded into the landscape and will be hidden by trees in time. These works are now coming to completion and I cannot see where the 'environmental damage' has arisen.
Correction to my figures above. 2 tunnels of 10 miles ( 16KM) long each
Thank you for your comments!
I would be very surprised if any farmers or other land owners have had property expropriated by HS2 without compensation.
Thank you for your comment :)
"it costs money! >:I" Sometimes I forgot theres a dedicated voterbase who just vote for as little infrastructure investment as possible. Also "we are smaller than France, it wont work for us", we are almost identical to France in Population/Size/Economy/climate its any excuse with these lot.
Thank you for your comment, I see your perspective.
As a local I was against it initially but can now see the potential (and doesn’t the Colne Valley viaduct look GREAT). Surely the question we should all be asking is how France, Italy, Spain (and I assume Germany) can build high-speed rail at a fraction of the cost (and don’t give me that compensation baloney)?
I wish I had a more balanced video, this was a random selected sample of people so somewhat representative of the overall populous. We tried to interview about 10 people in total. Should I make more? Or keep to the drone footage style videos?

I was employed on the Taiwan High Speed Rail project in 2000-2005 as Senior Inspector of Work on a 16 km section that had 11 tunnels, 10 bridge and a large section of viaduct and raised station. The ROW remained with a viaduct after the flood plain to bring the line into more stable ground in the foot hills. The tunnels were excavated using the NATM system of excavating short sections of top heading, installing roof bolts, mesh and applying a sprayed concrete lining in layers. Continuing down with the mid section and invert to form a ring structure. The viaduct section was built on spread footings, extra width piers capped with Earthquake suppression pads. The deck spans were either DSM, ASM or falsework cast insitu station tracks and platforms. One river bridge was erected using steel frame units, the others were cast insitu stressed beams and decks. The viaducts provided free movement for farmers, rather than an embankment. The contract was awarded to THSR on a design, build equip and run basis. The partners in THSR included Eva Air and Fubon bank, expat employees were given access to free flights and banking from these two companies.
Fascinating, thank you for your well informed comment!
Great video. I like the background and timeline you have described. It’s sad you have to put up with the drivel from those who can’t appreciate this engineering masterpiece.

Nothing but a monstrous blot on the landscape & a complete & utter waste of billions of pounds. HS2 is an environmental disaster of epic proportions & Britain's biggest infrastructure mistake in half a century.
Thank you for your comment :)
I live closby. The mess and chaos HS2 has caused and for what? To drop the time from London to Birmingham? This has cost billions, no one will benefit apart from the consultant's, land agents and construction companies etc. Monumental waste of money that would be better allocated to building new hospitals,
The point of the project is capacity on the rail network.
@@sidesplitter9497 Just like the Transpennine Upgrade - Going from two tracks to four - Building capacity for more trains.
Thank you for your comment :)
@@sidesplitter9497 With respect. If that's the argument. Why are Avanti West Coast allowed to cancel 30% of it's services, and why is the new East West route now having only 1z freight path per hour, instead of the original proposal of 2x ?. And why is it only going to Birmingham when there are already 2 main line routes from London to Birmingham ..
So you don't think it is important to get more people out of their polluting cars and into electric trains that free up capacity on existing lines for better local and regional services, and more freight then? No? Or are you just another tedious NIMBY...?

'Serious issues', a few small sinkholes !. Me thinks not. Local politicos have to be seen to be onto it, but its a storm in a Teacup.
Very true, I think the main issue which I didn’t talk about is the ever growing cost.
As it is a cost plus construction contract, the ever growing cost has no limits until every works package has been let, which relies on 100% of the scope of works being known. And that's about 3 or 4 years away. And on top of that comes inflation.
@@TrevorWilliams-fq8mg I didn't know that, do you know the current estimate?
The politicians eork on 2019 prices which makes government estimates meaningless. Best guess would be 130 billion which would include outstanding works contracts but if the project takes another 10 years there's all that inflation to add.

Completely agree, best to buy local and British
Yes, it is very much worth it. Or would you prefer to have the lush green landscape lost to rising sea levels due to CO2 from continued use of short-haul flights and ever increasing use of cars and lorries? We need modal shift, and this only comes with investment in alternatives. People like to comment on scars on the landscape when in fact they are commenting on an active building site. Reserve such commentary for when it is completed, and then compare to a 6 lane motorway and you will find it is by far the least impact compared to the alternatives
