OK, I had to put a file to the depth guides and cutters and try again.

Right up to her dogs in frozen maple. The MS 290 is having a hard time. I am having a hard time believing my chain is not razor sharp. I also forgot the wedges again. I build this saw from the crankshaft up. RBI steel cage bearings. New Stihl hard seals. Original cylinder, piston and rings. I ended up putting an old style Poulan muffler on it for now. No it does not fit correctly. I had to beat the muffler with a hammer and file the saw body but it starts and runs much better. I will try to do something with the original muffler. I have a new chain coming so I hope to cut 6 to 10 inch hardwood with it.

I just could not leave well enough alone. I had to see what was inside the muffler. Was it a catalyst type muffler. No it was not. so a big hole at the bottom of the muffler would have done the trick. Big enough to clean out the muffler. It has a screen around the baffle to serve as a spark arrester anyway.

Looks like this saw will start reliably. It will cut small stuff if you are in no rush. I would like to find something to make a strato tube from and get it up to par, then do a muffler mod. But the saw runs good enough for now.

If your are looking for hot saw action... sorry to waste your time. Just getting this old turd running for something to do. Strato port is still blocked. It needs a chain. This is Andrew's saw and he most likely will use it as a carpenter tool. I ran the saw for 8 minutes to see if it is reliable. If it hangs around here much longer... I had some problems with this one. Put fuel lines and a carb on. Fuel filter fell off during first start up and sucked leftover junk into the new carb. It quit and I thought I may have a coil problem but figured it out in the end. Strato tube was split so I plugged the hole for now. Still need to fix that and tune it. Going to dress the bar and sharpen the chain next.

It's a spark arrestor
a baffle and screen yes. it has a spark aresstor over the tiny slits on the outside. That way it can be cleaned. I put it all back inside the muffler and put a large hole in the bottom of the muffler. I agree it will serve as a spark arrestor.
That 290 sounds pretty mean 👍. Muff. Mod. And tune makes them run very well. Cut on
@richysoutdoors2591 Yes, the stock muffler is very restricted, and if you look at the specifications, it shows 3.8Hp EPA and 4.1HP European. The muffler is the only difference that I know of.
Nice, I couldn't quite hear what the carburetor was doing but what do you think the problem is?
@JdChainsaws the saw has been sitting around so long that the diaphragms are hard as a rock. It will start and idle now that I have run some good fuel through it. I will fix the carburetor and post a video if it cutting wood. May open up the muffler a little more. Bumped the timing a little when I was cleaning it up.

@@michaelwheadon1078 yeah I guess that's it coz too lean causes them to completely cut out under throttle.i try to ride that fine line with all my saws.and to hell with a break in period rich saws run like shit

@@michaelwheadon1078 oh you changed it over to. .325? I've had a few wild things and all were 3/8 lp.i know people love to hate on them,but they actually aren't that bad. I made quite a bit of $ back in the day cutting firewood with a couple of them
@thehonestwoodcutterbradywe8011 I don't think the .325 cuts much better than 3/8 lp but most of my saws are .325 so one file for all. The bar I got covered the cost of the new sprocket anyway.

Canada Post said Amazon never contacted them re: the missing product ... I can confirm no ticket has been opened by Amazon yet which mean they haven't reached out for this item.
