This white came up to us while fishing 9nm off of Bunbury WA. It started by nosing the sea anchor and after we slowly pulled it in the white pointer began circling the boat. Then it was time to go as the boat was only 4.5m long. Ken, the boats owner was very happy the leave.

Here is a slide show and video of my Ali flat pack boat build. I hope you like. Please leave comments.
Hey mate what do you think of the hulls. Im also in WA
Yet jeff by far the best performing hull I’ve ever been in. But the thing that suprised ya is the stability at rest. It’s like having a seakeaper on the boat.
How much sanding what grit ect cheers
Depends on the finish you want. Did most at 80 grit to start with but then finished it off at 250 for a nice mat finish. Orbital sander.
@@michaelchild145 yer nice one , I just want to get the weld lines out of it
Does the design require 2 motors or can you run a single?
Hey mate The design didn’t require 2 motors but it all depends on the weight and its position. As the entry is so fine at the front the more weight like I have on the front with minnkota, suspention seats, fridge and anchor winch requires a bigger weight at the back to counteract the weight at the front. It’s about it sitting corectly at rest and ensuring the perfect ride. A fair bit of design goes into each hull from GMD and its basicly a full custom hull. Like all boats everything is a trade off. Hope that makes sence. I’ve seen this hull and the smaller and larger hulls with single motors before.
Great job, looks good! I am about to embark on a cnc marine kit soon. What is the best way to cut out the parts, grinder with alu blade ? jigsaw? plasma torch ? Other ?
Hey mate send me an email on fat090@bigpond.com and I’ll send you pics of the blades I used. I also put candle wax on the blades and the 3m sanding discs to stop them binding up and keep them sharp.
I also have another video of my latest boat build and it has plenty more tips and tricks to building boats on there as well.
Hey Michael How's the fuel economy with the 140hp Suzuki's? What size tank did you go?
Hey mate I upgraded the fuel to the max from 250lts -360lts and had to sacrifice the kill tank from the std design. I haven’t looked lately but early on i was getting 1.2 litres per norticle mile or 1.54km per L. So 60.1 nm traveled 73L used. I’d expect better now it’s run in but considering those numbers are for fuel total for both motors and the boat weights over 2.5 tonne and I drive it hard that’s pretty good in my eyes.
Wow Michael, amazing build, what a boat! Saltshaker sold?
Thanks mate. Yep salt shaker is sold and the guy has been doing some trips in it. I coulnt keep both. And as you can imagine needed the budget for this build.
@@michaelchild145 I still have my 5m CC, while you upsized, I will most likely downsize 🙂 Fabulous build as usual mate. Coincidently, I bought the SWS Alumig as well, really great, wish I had it when I built the 5m CC.
Yep mate I def do miss my 5m cc as I had it 10 years but def enjoying having a cabin and a propper helm seat and position in my old age ha ha yer the sws was mint. Def wish it was around when I built my first one.
Sensational build and video Michael, congratulations and thanks for sharing your journey !!!
Thanks for watching mate
Thank you, Great video
cracking job mate well done
Thanks mate
Thanks mate
Whats the flat forfoot area in bow for Looks odd where bottom sheets are butted up then almost looks like a bit half a meter long shaved off
Good spotting mate. Its a new part of all Airriders ( about 4 years ago ) the GMD guys developed it and it’s meant to eliminate breaching or grabbing on an angle in a following sea at high speeds. You tend to slide down a wave and it dosent grab at all. I must say the airriders have never been known for doing this but just adds that extra level of protection in from it. It’s been in the the water for 6 months and I’ve never had an issue and travel back in following sea at 30+ knots regularly.
How much did kit cost?
Contact global marine design mate. As every kit is different.
Have done pall got a cost for cut files to get one cut in uk Stephen collett super helpfull Ps she looks sweet you made a nice job i know whats envolved i built a 4.2 from cnc about same time you built your 5m cnc
Cheers mate if you can build a cnc you shouldn’t have a problem. The drawings are more engineering drawings from GMD so there isn’t a step by step rough how to like CNC but that’s why I did the video to help guys out who want to build one. Let me know how you go mate. Im interested in how you go and always available for questions if needed.
@@michaelchild145 cheers , dont think following drawings will be an issue as thats my day job , not necessary boats although have built 10 upto now but complex fabrications, although we used to do the prop nozzles in steel for a large boat building company near us some of which were 5 tonnes each
Yep mate. You got it easy then. I just look at welds now a days so the drawing bit was the easy bit. Fab speed was the bit that took way longer for me Ha ha. The green will be the other thing you notice compared to other builds. But there is a reason for it as there are so many hull joins that there can be some variations in the final product so they allow green so there isn’t any issues just takes a bit to get your head around why but at the end you see it.
Hi Michael Great job on the build!! Very impressive. I’m looking at doing the same build and seen you where using a dual pulse SWS 230 mig. Looking at your welds it looks good. Where you happy with that welder ? As very well priced. Also I would really like to have a chat with you prior to our build. Do you still live in Bunbury as I’m not far living in Kirup. Look forward to hearing from you. Rob
Hey Rob. Yep mate still in bunbury. My mate Blair just called me about you popping around and he’s going to pass on my info or find me on book face. Happy to run you through everything.
@@michaelchild145 thanks Michael I’ll give you a call one night and work out a time that suits you to come and check it out and have a chat.
Sounds like a plan Rob !!
A top job, the Global Marine AIR RIDER is a great vessel - a soft ride that seems perfect for the fetch off WA... Excellent effort in the build, obviously taking care of the metal. Cheers to all - Jeff
Thanks jeff the Air rider is such a great hull design and very fun and challenging to build
@@michaelchild145 quite a few have been built recently in Southern NZ and by fellows who know their stuff... Their local Southern waters can have an evil fetch, yet the Air Rider seems gentle on the crew. Dingo Marley (Sea Rescue Bunbury) rides well...
Yer mate definitely Diego Marley is our local sea rescue boat in Bunbury WA. They have been used a commercial fishing and sea rescue boats for years. The new Malaysian customs boats look good too. Good to see they ate making there way over to nz. Next level hull the only issue is that there is a lot of hours in one compared to a std monohull so more $$ but worth is i recon.
Swell job !! Happy sailing .
What a great skill to have to be able to weld Aluminium. Saved you thousands I bet. Well done what a great job.
Love the build mate good work I know you said don't ask on the cost but in the long run did you save money ? As opposed to buying it off the shelf
Def saved money mate. Its call sweat equity and i saved 10-15 on the cost of buying it off the shelf at the time. Thats probably 20-30k now
Very impressive indeed.
That there is something you should be extremely proud to have done. My mate built a 8 m it looked very similar to yours. He had been wanting to build one for years then he got the chance, it came as a flat pack all cut up. He was doing it after work, it took him 12months it was beautiful the workman ship was like yours, amazing. He only had to fit the gally out as it was a half cab but you could walk around up on the side, it had a forward facing windscreen. So only the gally to deck out and he had a bit of a cough for about 2months just could shake it and his old school and hanging to finish the boat as we drive from Victoria up to the Kimberly’s fishing rivers and out at long reef, love it. Then he went to the doctor and… yep he had the dancer, all he had the chance to do is take it out for a maiden voyage and run the Suzuki in with 8hrs the he was to sick to do anything anymore and lasted 4ish months then left us all. RIP 🙏🏼 DAVE BOLLEN @52. Enjoy your master piece and show it off as much as possible it’s a credit to your workmanship 💯👍🏼
Sad story mate RIP but as he passed i bet he was satisfied he finished it and got to go for a trip out in it. Ive cutrently just built a second bout after selling this 18 months ago thats 7.5m long. Watch this space for a new video.
i hope it wasnt caused by the boat build
Very nice! Thanks for sharing your build.
Impressive build. What anodes do you use? I hear Navalloy may be the way to go for salt/fresh protection.
Just a small round one on the back mate. No corrosion issues as it Dosent live in salt water
Nice build mate, looks great. 10/10

High Michael I just bought an ac/dc tig because everyone said that's what I'd need to weld aluminium. Now all the boat build videos are guys using migs and spool guns...is there a such thing as an ac/dc mig is that what I need or did you weld this boat with a dc mig not needing a cleaning action because the aluminium isn't old/oxidise layered?
Hey robbie. I used s kempi minarc mig 180 ( no spool gun ) for everything except the fuel tank. As it was within my budget. The 2 biggest issues with tig is time and heat imput / distortion with boat building. With the fuel tank i wanted 100% defect free welds so went with tig as the distortion is not an issue. As for a description on mig welders this explains it in more detail www.thefabricator.com/thewelder/article/aluminumwelding/aluminum-workshop-electrical-current-in-tig-and-mig As for spool guns the reason people use them is that aluminum is soft so it you shorten the distance between the rollers and the arc there is less chance of a bird cage in the rollers. I didn’t use a spool gun but was anal about my tips and had a special liner for aluminium ( offered as a part from kempi for the machine). The other reason on bigger machines is the distance from the machine to the hand piece can be longer. Hope that helps. And these are just my personal views.
How much did that cost you?
Kit was about $10,500 Ausie dollars about 8 years ago
How much was the total fit out if u dont mind me asking.... im looking to do the same...

Line back at ya
You mentioned TIG in the video when you were doing to tank. Did you TIG the whole thing or was most of it MIG? Do you have details on the welders you used?
Only tig was the fuel tank mate the rest was mig. Mig was a kempi minarc mig 180 and tig was a boc smooth arc 185 ac/dc. Both were 15a single phase units in Australia.
WOW you must of been so proud of yourself, thats one of the best center consoles ive seen .AND TO BE ABLE TO STAND BACK AND SAY I BUILT THAT .(LEGENDRY MATE)
Thanks for the kind words mate. Def gets some attention. I always get asked who built it and if fun to say i did.
Do they run welding courses as well?
Not sure mate. Most tafe centres (australia) run welding courses if your interested. Def worth is as controlling distortion is pretty key and obviously you want it water tight.
@@michaelchild145 yeah I’ve neve managed to make a course where I live (remote) they want me to pay for the course three months in advance and my roster is really bloody random.
@@Rubibi-saltwaterjim yer mate i was in the Pilbara of WA for 13 years residential so im feeling your pain. If you cant make a course maybe utube videos. There are 1000s of them on welding aluminum.
Legend mate 👍
Looking at a build, how hard was the build
I have a welding background so for me it was pretty easy to be honest. Just have to spend the time completing it. Most kits now a days have easy to follow instructions and back up from the seller so if you have any questions they are easily answered.
Muito profissionalismo.
Michael, sorry if you have already answered this but what size wire did you run in the kemppi ?
Hey mate i ran 0.9mm wire.
Hey mate, looking to do the same. Would you say it was less expensive to build rather to buy ? Not including your hours in the build price.
I found it was cheeper to build rather than buy. All up i spend 45k au$ and when i looked at similar boats of that construction they go for between 50-60k so cheeper not including your time. Plus you get exactly what you want as the more you change something at a boat sales place the more the price goes up. Prob would have saved more if i had of built the trailer but i wanted to go fishing !!
I have another comment but it Is a question did u polish side plates aluminum after welding?thx
Nope i didnt polish just used a flap disk on either side of the weld and left the nateral plate finish on the sides. Still looks the same now!
And another one question did it warped and did it look wavey?
@@НиколаАј no mate didnt warp it. Heat input control is very important hence why you see me in pics back stepping my welds to limit distortion.
Dude I only wish I was your tig welder
How much is the total cost in dollar pls let us know
Was 10k for the kit a few years ago mate and it goes up from there !
Is cheaper to build a kit or buy one already made .....looks like a really cool project
Im not sure why, but i had to smoke a cigarette after watching this..
Ha ha the absolute weirdest comment i have ever got mate
An SS anchor as well Michael ! , that's just showing off :-) great job mate
Cheers mate 7 years and still going strong !
Great work Michael... beautiful... would you kind to share the blue print.. im planning to build my first boat.. thanks!
cnc marine website.. CAD drawings are pricey from what I gathered and probably are meant for series builders and not capable individuals which want to design a highly customized boat on their own, who have CAD abilities and access to sheet metal cutting (laser, waterjet, cnc router). I'm currently looking into this myself - goal being a 21' cuddy cabin with steps and tunnel ala Michael Peters (10-15% more efficient) - that's how I know. Look up Metal Shark 40 Fearless and some pdfs from professional boatbuilder magazine with interviews about hulls like that (title: Peters on powerboats) - funnily enough, they have some low res hull plans in that article from several boats. That's where I'll be starting from anyway.
