Phyllis was Very Talented and a Beautiful Voice. She should have made it Big. RIP
Nothing can top the original but this is by far my favorite revival or other version.
This is my favorite show of all time. The first time I saw it was on opening night of the original production.
✨️💖WOW !!!✨️
A pleasant compilation. Several appearances of Larry David
My eyes can’t look away from Donna McKechnie. She’s magnetic.
I saw this production twice. When I read in the program that Michael Bennett’s original choreography was reproduced for this number,I was literally on the edge of my seat both times when it was performed. ❤
We saw the final performance of that memorable show. Mr.Sondheim, who always attended the final performence of his shows if possible, was sitting three rows behind us. Phylis Newman's hubby, Adolph Green was two rows in front of us. Great memories of a great show and great lady.
RIP Phyllis Newman! I saw her many years ago and the one woman show, the madwoman of Central Park West at the 22 steps Theater. I will never forget it or her.
She sings it wonderfully but the line reading in the spoken dialogue prior…Christ
I"m so glad I found your youtube channel.... I use to watch your comedy on TV years ago....you are so talented...I remember the one about..."iv'e been shot" lol and going to where the barn used to be....lol I forgot how all of it went...but I remember how funny you are! ; } i will be checking out your videos...thanx for all the laughs....
This is sad. Literally, I’m scrolling on tv after watching South Park and what pops on is “Comedy Central presents” with your truly, thought I’d give it a chance to watch cause I like comedy more the newer guys but the special I just watched for CC, Jim did the saint Laurent joke and it was like 20 years ago. It was sad to see he is still doing that stupid joke so many years after like yeah man, maybe I don’t know maybe you were a big shot or respected by the comedian vets but I’ve never heard of you nor any comedian now a days mention you in a story & it’s just like yeah you wonder why? Maybe because you don’t update your act, work on a new special? Actually think of new jokes besides old dumb freakin jokes that weren’t funny to begin with. During this special more people just clap after you make a joke like your a charity kid rather than actually laugh. I always learned to respect my elders but definitely don’t assume that they know better or smarter than anyone younger, they can definitely be dumber than someone younger than them. Besides your probably one of those dipshit comedians that actually insults the crowd for not getting some obscure political reference but you call them dumb, but your the retard being political at a comedy show on a Friday when most young people go out to relax and laugh, like geez know your crowd they’re like 60% of the whole act if you don’t know your audience might as well get off the stage. Sorry to tear you down this much, I just felt so compelled to write this comment I really do try to give people a chance but after watching the shit CC performance man you were not funny at all, more stupid. maybe your acts better now who knows, your so old school there’s hardly anyway for someone to know or look you up unless it’s in person and I can’t do that if I don’t live in nyc. Get the with the times dude 🤦🏻🤷🏻
first revival? what about the London west end production of 1987 then ? that wasn't exactly summer stock you know....
@nondescript2892: But didn’t the London production open in the summer? So wouldn’t that make it summer stock? (He,he)
So funny! NC guy here too..
Phenomenal! This production had "Broadway" written all over it. And everyone was willing to go there with it, EXCEPT SONDHEIM, who refused to give permission. At least they also released a cast recording of this. Cheers.
maybe he believed it to be too much a parade of the old favorites ? its a show that has something to say about nostalgia, loss and broken promises for sure but it also became a vaudeville for the " oh isn't she death yet?" gay flop connaiseurs...maybe he wanted to avoid that? ...
@user-le2eq3iv4o: There is no recording of this production. There was a complete recording with fragments of songs and alternatives that used some of the cast members like Ann Miller who performed their roles here but it was not a cast of the Paper Mill production.
@@johnpickford4222 Thanks for your comment. Very confusing, because in the booklet that accompanies that 2-CD set (on the TVT label), there is a big heading on the first page saying Paper Mill Playhouse with a poster for the production. Which performers are not on this recording? And which performers on the recording were not in the original production? Cheers.
Sondheim? I thought the wife of James Goldman, who wrote the book and was handling her husband's business, who put the nix on the transfer. Sondheim supposedly loved the production.
@@topogigio2879 Interesting. Would she really have had the clout to overrule him? I think a more interesting reason is that Sondheim already had a Broadway production of "Follies" on the calendar (the one with Blythe Danner), and he didn't want to create any competition with himself. Cheers.
OMG too much talent so absorb.
Love the show! Hope you're doing well
Do you ever play in Vegas? I live here, and I would love to see you live!
Haven't in a while but I'll let you know1
New York can almost become a character in a film. I think of Ghostbusters, Spiderman, Manhattan, Rosemary's Baby, King King, even Seinfeld.
It is 😉

HAS been, for a century now! Hello?
So glad Woody captured NYC in its heyday. 'Course, it has changed since then. Like America itself. RIP
Thanks to Jim David, one of the few people who can still make me laugh. RIP Mother 2/8/20 trump's covid. Comedians can be artists and life-savers.
One of the greatest songs from one of the greatest musicals of all time. And thank God, I was around to see this, the greatest production of the same in my lifetime, with immeasurable talent some of which has since left this world.
I hope the kids today see this to see how it's (professionalism) is really done.
Mariel Hemingway is amazing.
what the hell is so 'amazing' about her, other that you might have a crush on her when you were 11?
@@anastassiosperakis2869 Do you just run around trying to make stupid insulting comments? Mental defective. Cannot ever be trusted to use a simple keyboard responsibly. FO.
I am so glad Woody loves NYC .... someone has to live there. I love the guy, I love his movies, and I even love the idea of NYC, but as they say, I would not want to live there. My Dad used to live there in the 70's just as the WTC was being completed. The food was incredible - anywhere you went - like Paris. Upstate New York around Ithaca and the Finger Lakes region is just incredibly beautiful though. Think of the forests and scenery in the "Last Of The Mohicans" ... the most beautiful place on Earth.
Saw this production at The Paper Mill Playhouse. It left an indelible impression in my mind. Awesome doesn't even nearly describe it!
so true.
Which person is Phyllis Newman ?
The lead singer in purple.
Major Balls! I am rolling lol. Jim you are hilarious. Much love and be safe out there.
You know what's a shame, they didn't put Ann Miller as Stella Deems in this number, she is practically the goddess of tap! Maybe she wanted to do something different or maybe she wasn't feeling up to it, after all she was over 70! It would have been nice to see here in it, oh well, she was fabulous in I'm Still Here anyway! Phyllis knocked this one out of the park! Bravo! 🤗😍👏
I was just thinking the same thing.
I kind of love how Donna, as wonderfully as she plays a frumpy middle-aged Sally, cannot help but dance the shit out of this number.
Love the update, stay safe Jim!
I love your updates from home! please stay safe and be well. I've enjoyed your comedy since your special on comedy central.
Saw you on Oasis of the Seas a few years back and you were absolutely brilliant! I don’t get how you’re not one of the most famous comedians out there
She sang it also in the 1985 Follies in Concert performance with Lee Remick Barbara Cook Elaine Stritch Liliane Montecechi and Betty Camden
...and was much, much better then. This was kinda painful to watch.
That's what i knew first and measure everything else against
I went to see "On the town" on Broadway in March 2015, when it was announced Phylliss Newman was guest of honour in the audience, she got a great round of applause.

@airlinena: She was married to Adolph Green so she was Mrs. Green; she was Miss Newman.

OK. the mirror image is too cool. Great timing!
I miss seeing your uploads! I'm excited to see this!!! Thanks for brightening my evening🥰
I still miss the Twin Towers.
Gershwin's Rapsody in Blue, Woody Allen clips and NYC strangely moving.
i saw you on comedy central presents, live, as a child. it shaped my comedic view for my whole life. 18 years later and i still quote it. this is the first time I've been able to find you in about 15 years. thank you for introducing me into the world of comedy. wouldn't change it for the world
Hi Chris - so nice of you to say that to me. That makes me feel great in so many ways, and I'm honored to be someone you evidently felt watching as a kid like I felt watching Phyllis Diller, Rodney Dangerfield & Lily Tomlin. If you would like more of me I have my 4 comedy albums available for download on iTunes. My favorite is the most recent, Hard To Swallow. Keep laughing every day, and thanks so much for your message. His Comedy Central Presents stand-up is the BEST. I know exactly what he means about both kids and relatives! This clip is so great because I have screaming arguments with machines, too.
