Introducing: MAGIC CHEF
CPC Associates, Hollywood, CA 1982 -
This was the first commercial produced with this stop motion character. The CPC team and I went to Florida to film pro golfer Jack Nicklaus and his daughter Nan. From a 2D-client logo I designed and built this character and his replacement heads. I supervised the plate shoot and back at CPC’s Hollywood effects studio, I did the stop motion animation, lighting and compositing. We shot about six 30 second commercials with this character. CPC was nice enough to let me bring my wife and two young daughters along to Florida. I loved Florida’s key lime pie!

Robocop 2 Optical Printing 101 Part 2

Optical Printing 101: Part 2. The continuing saga at the Tippett Studio optical department. Harry Walton set up his optical printer at Tippett Studio for work on Robocop 2. Here I go over the threading of the projector head. I added a humidifier to the optical room to keep the relative humidity at 65%. This kept any minute dust particles at bay. When contact printing, if the humidity was too hi...

Excelsior! Animated Moving Pictures, May 1977 - Hamburger Helper's helping hand. This is a very quick stop motion puppet I made with an aluminum armature and hand carved poly foam. This was the first animation I did to give the ad agency an idea of how this character would move and act. Needham, Harper & Stears, the ad agency, wanted an animated character to promote their client's product.
Colorado Castle Matte Painting Composite

Colorado Castle Matte Painting Composite : An early digital matte shot test I did in 2006 - The plate is a still photo my daughter took when she was in Colorado. I hand painted part of the sky and hill where they join to reshape the hill. The castle is a photo that I partially painted to integrate into the hill. The lake, fence posts at left, top third of the tree at left, and path leading up t...

Welcome to my You Tube channel...this is my first posting. This is a test matte shot I did in 2012 called "The Beast from Mystic Valley." I shot the plate at a hiking area near Mount Boney in Thousand Oaks, CA. I am headed for that strange rock formation where the beast is reported to dwell. Everything is hand painted in Photoshop except for the sky and foreground rock. Compositing done with Af...

This was great. Do you still have the original dinosaur animations (on film) from the Land of the Lost? It would be amazing if those were transferred in HD. A lot of the detail was lost back when they transferred it for use (at standard def) in the TV series.

I only have about 12 of my shots on 35mm color work print. It was too difficult to get an extra print for oneself during production.

gotcha. It would e amazing to see what you did have. But I understand the challenges of getting the film transferred at this point. Thanks.

Just wanted to echo what others have said: thank you for posting this video. I have been trying to find more information on these printers and the processes surrounding them. There is surprisingly little information on these incredible machines; especially when one considers their groundbreaking contributions to modern day image making.

Also, did the ad agency give you a character design drawing to work off of, or did you design the character from scratch? Thank you!

The ad agency had no designs, they just said they wanted a stylized hand.

I've noticed that the mouth of a Hamburger Helper's ''Helping Hand'' mascot wasn't designed yet and his design looks a little messy compared to the shiny final touches being used on the character.
