My two cents about science: - No one is immune to bias, but the scientific process has built-in tools to mitigate that bias, such as falsification or peer-reviews. - I don't think scientists exclude the supernatural from the get go, since there is no scientific definition of the supernatural. For example, if tomorrow there was new scientific evidence that ghosts are real, then ghosts would not be considered supernatural anymore.

I am an agnostic so no i dont believe the bible is entirely true or is the word of god.If someone claims divine guidance or saying this is the word of a god without evidence then it gains a kind of authority that would not otherwise have. As an agnostic religion would have to come up with verifiable evidence other than a book. Stories like a serpent talking to eve, or lots wife being turned to a pillar of salt or god creating in 6 days. I cant say all the bible is untrue but stories like ones above where is claiming supernatural or extraordinary events these needs to be verified but there is no way to verify. The bible is ok for at least some moral teachings but whether some of the things like the examples i have previously mentioned actually happened is another matter. Some would say all the bible is true because is the word of god or because Jesus said is was true and i say ok can you prove is the word of god or some divine guidance was given to the writer.

"There is NO longer Gentiles nor Jews, slaves nor Free, etc... for you all ONE in Christ, and If you belong to Messiah(Christ) then you are of the household of Abraham..." Paul The verse above overrides anything about slavery in the Bible !

Thanks for the comment! This verse is mostly talking about how in salvation we are all one in Christ. There is no partiality in Christ. So while this verse doesn’t necessarily denounce slavery altogether, it certainly doesn’t promote it or help the case that the Bible supports slavery. It’s a great example of the concept of Slavery being anti-Christian. Thanks for your thoughts!

Rather than being about impartiality, this verse is about equity and interdependence. Slavery has no place under the NEW COVENANT ! As a matter of fact, on the basis of this verse bishops in the Greco-Roman world would go to the market for slaves, buy them and set them free. Get out of the Bible and read history on how this verse was applied in the real world. Sola Scriptura just sucks !

@@WordFirstMinistries There is no such thing as slavery under the NEW COVENANT. More to the point, this verse is not talking about impartiality as you believe; this verse is about equity. If as a pagan Christ(Messiah) makes you a member of Abraham's household, it is out of question to sell a member of your family for money. It was on the basis of this verse that bishops in the Roman Empire would go out to the slave markets buy some and set them free. Get out of the Bible and read some real history books and you will find out how the first community of believers in the first centuries applied those principles in the real life...

@@WordFirstMinistries THE GREEK PAGANS TRIUNE GOD IN TRINITY Given that Jesus is not one of the many sons of god Zeus, the god of the Greeks, and that the God of Abraham did not promise a Son to Israel but the Messiah (HaMashiak) which the Greek forgers and fiddlers have translated as “Christus” as it is written: "I will raise among them the Messiah(Christus)HaMashiak, a Prophet(Messenger) like you Moses, Him they must listen..." Deut.18:15-19; Acts 3:17-24; Acts 7:1-30; Luke 24:25-27 and 44-47; Acts 17:1-3; John 4:24-25, Surah 3:81, etc. Considering that the Gospel that Paul proclaimed to the world mentions JESUS CHRIST SON OF GOD and not JESUS. Therefore, we can deduce that Trinity is a misunderstanding of the Pauline doxology of “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”! Because between Jesus Christ (HaMashiak) Son of God and Jesus Son of God... there is a great philosophical and legal difference if we take as a legal framework the TEN COMMANDMENTS and the social environment where Jesus was born!

If you guys were for real rather than saying that Christians opposed slavery you should look at the actual history. The Anglican Church had Bishops in the British House of Lords. They voted for slavery up to the 19th Century. The Church actually owned a plantation. The Catholic Church opposed the enslavement of Christians and also the natives of the New World. However they did not come out against slavery till the congress of Vienna in the 19th Century. If you look at the Catholic Encyclopedia the writer says that initially they thought that slavery could be okay as an institution with safeguards. The Church however changed it's position. The Southern Baptists have apologized for their support of slavery and Jim Crow. Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas both saw slavery as okay. If you look at the historical debates one of the key arguments of supporters of slavery was the Bible. They argued that it was an accepted practice and was endorsed by the Bible

Hey Tom, this is Jake from the video. Thanks for your thoughts but I think we have had a miscommunication here. First of all even if I grant the way that you have portrayed the history behind this issue (I don't but that is another issue), we actually did point out that there were some Christians (so-called) who abused the Bible to justify their sinful actions in owning slaves. Sure the Anglicans did it, sure the Catholics did it, and sure the Southern baptists did it. It was still wrong, and still against the Bible for them to do it. Our actual claim in the video was that there was a consistent Christian voice throughout history standing against slavery as en institution. And that is absolutely true. I could, if you'd like, list name after name of Christian thinkers who promoted the abolition of slavery, calling it a grave sin, and working to free slaves. There is a really good reason why Christians consistently stood against slavery, and it wasn't in spite of their Christian commitments.

I think there are a few things you weren't quite right about here, and some glaring holes for taking on a topic like this. So if I may? First, you seem to think that the Biblical laws around slavery were somehow "unique", "revolutionary", "nothing qualitatively similar", in "the few places you could find them". This simply is not true in the Ancient Near East. Every nation had slave laws. For example, the law against kidnapping someone and making them a slave? Every nation at the time had some version of this law. Israel was in no way unique. Israel had some laws that were better, some that were worse, but mostly were pretty consistent with laws in the surrounding nations. You just have to look into it, and not take someones word that said that. And I hear it a lot so you're not unique here. And you didn't really provide your definition of "chattel slavery" though you mentioned it a lot. But you definitely seems to agree that chattel slavery was bad. But I don't think you either know what chattel slavery is, or that this is also condoned in the Bible? I'm honestly not sure which, since you never got to the verses where it's condoned in this entire video. Chattel slavery is simply owning another person as property (chattel) for their entire lives, making them work without pay, and owning their children after them. And this is in fact condoned (by definition) in the Bible. Kidnapping is not required or even relevant. And contrary to what you said here, it was very common throughout history as opposed to "almost not existing" as you claimed. It's just found in Leviticus 25:44-46 and not in Exodus 21. You listed Lev. but never spoke of the laws there. Which may be why you were confused on this. Even going so far as to say "I think it's pretty obvious that any form of chattel slavery violates the Bible". Really nothing could be further from the truth? You also seem to think that all slaves were set free at some point, going so far as to say they couldn't be slaves forever. 100% not true at all. Do you may not realize that there are different rules for native Hebrew "slaves" (really indentured servants, so not even slaves really) and foreigners in Israel. A native Hebrew could not be a chattel slave, that was reserved for foreigners under Biblical law. And the were lifelong, generational chattel slaves. That's why this is always brought up as an issue. It's not so much the treatment of slaves, as it is the condoning of chattel slavery. And I did not really hear anything about this being addressed in this video. Now in fairness, you may simply not have known this. But then, perhaps don't do a video on it? You also characterized Exodus 21:2-6 as if the man "loves his master and his family, he can marry into the family and become part of the family". This is not at all how you laid it out. The Hebrew man, if his master has given him a wife and he has children, has to leave his family forever after his six years of service are up if he wants to be free. Because his wife and children belong to his master. And the only way to stay with his family is to agree to become a slave to his master for the rest of his life too. That's what the verses say. Nothing about "marrying into the family" is said here. Because it isn't true. And by the way, calling the slave "money" that you weren't sure what it meant? In this context it means "property". Which to me, is the problem I have with verses 20-21. And saying that "it wasn't self-evident back then that slavery was wrong" I completely agree with. Which is why I don't understand why God, knowing it was wrong presumably, didn't tell us that. Keep all the rules and whatnot if you want, but at least tell us it was wrong, a sin, or against His will? Because as it stands, the Bible only tells us how to do slavery correctly, and never that we shouldn't be doing it. Which is at least partly why so many people have used the Bible to justify the practice over the next 2,000 years. Something else that God would have presumably known? That's the way it seems to me at least.

Hey Nick, this is Jacob, thanks for your thoughts. This kind of comment is exactly the kind of thing that we are talking about when we say that the online discourse surrounding slavery needs improvement. There are actually a lot of inaccuracies in your comment both about our video and about the Biblical data that I won't address all of them in a simple RUclips comment, but maybe I can address what I find to be the most pressing issues. Firstly, we did define Chattel Slavery in the video and I respectfully disagree that "man-stealing" is irrelevant to buying and selling human beings as property. Man-stealing is relevant as that is how many people were even made to be sold in the first place as chattel, and the Bible calls that out for what God thinks of it: a sin punishable by death. I am well aware of the Leviticus 25:44-46. We didn't talk about it because it was not the purpose of the video. We were trying to highlight the usually glossed over texts to give a more balanced perspective on what the Bible and God's actual position on slavery is. Everything we said, barring the setting the slaves free after 6 years, is also relevant to the Hebrew people's Foreign slaves. Your caricaturization of Exodus 21:2-6 I think is completely off. Deuteronomy 15 contains a parallel passage that says that the Slave can remain with the master "if they love him". It is clearly, in my estimation, depicting the slave becoming a part of the family. The motivation is love, they marry the master's daughter, and become a part of the family for life. As far your problems with Exodus 21:20-21, that's fair. We weren't responding to your problems. I was responding to the more commonly posed criticism from this text, which is that it reads to some people like masters are allowed to beat their slaves as long as they don't kill them. Of course, as addressed in the video, the text does not say that.

As far as using words like “property” to describe slaves, whether Hebrew or Gentile: the law did not allow for the Hebrew people to treat them strictly as property in the same sense as actual property (since I do not believe, nor do I believe that the God who was speaking in Exodus or Leviticus believes, that human beings actually can be property). For example, in the Hebrew law if someone’s Ox or another animal ran away, they were to be returned to its owner. This is not the case with slaves, since they are not property in the same sense. Also, there is no death sentence for killing someone’s animal, but there is a death sentence for killing slaves. What ever the precise meaning for the term “money” or property is in the Hebrew law, when it refers to slaves, it still carries with it the dignity of the human person. The same cannot be said for chattel slavery, as it was regularly practiced.

I think there’s a little misunderstanding here. What many are saying is, “God will not give you a trial that you cannot handle.” This means that God does not set us up for failure. If we choose failure that is our choice. He planned out our lives and made sure that whatever trial we endure, it is possible for us to come out of that trial positive. You’re making it sound like progression is not possible with this belief, but that makes no sense. Progression can only happen if there is a chance for success or failure, and Him giving us something where both are always a possibility is the definition of progress.
