Na Tha Kuchh Toh Khuda Tha is one of the most famous and popular of Ghalib's ghazals. Based on my readings of other scholars, here's an attempt at demystifying this beautiful composition. While translations and interpretations always help, the true lutf or pleasure of a ghazal is attained when one truly immerses themselves in its verses. Please find the full text of the Ghazal below:
na thā kuchh to ḳhudā thā kuchh na hotā to ḳhudā hotā
Duboyā mujh ko hone ne na hotā maiñ to kyā hotā
huā jab ġham se yuuñ be-his to ġham kyā sar ke kaTne kā
na hotā gar judā tan se to zaanū par dharā hotā
huī muddat ki 'ġhālib' mar gayā par yaad aatā hai
