The reality is that if a child traces their birth parents or their birth parents trace a child using the online method, you have to be prepared for reality even if it is sad (such as a separation from abuse, neglect, or bad parenting practices, and it could blow the cover up stories told to young children (such as their parent was nice when they weren’t or a sibling death was faked to cover up an adoption) to hide the adoption or hide the reason they are in care out of the water. Once a child knows a birth parents identifying information, unmediated contact can be made via social media, email, text messaging, phone calls, internet chat services, or other ways. This limits the amount of control the adoptive parents have over contact via the adoption agency. Additionally the person reuniting may not receive the pre-visit counseling or a confidential intermediary, nor will social workers be able to easily monitor the contact being made via the internet. It is also very difficult to force a birth relative to use letterbox only contact after the child has opened another channel of contact. The same is true for reversing confidentiality and privacy. While there are ways to control contact online such as blocking them, changing ones email or phone number, deleting one’s social media profile, etc, these may not restore full anonymity nor resume all adoptive parent control nor force letterbox. Any identifying information that is inside one’s brain or stored offline can be difficult to erase and to erase it on a offline device would require physical access to it. Children and adoptive parents need to know that they can call for facilitation before or after when online contact is made but they will have to arrange it as it cannot be forced.

Personally, I have worked in foster care as a social worker/counselor, special education social work in a school district, juvenile social worker/therapist and now as the school social worker. That was all within a three-year period... my changes in career was not due to being overworked or under prepared but changes in location, lack of funding and greater opportunities. I love the field of social work, and I love working with children and families. I do believe there need to be a lot more social workers being hired… And my channel helps to support and encourage new social workers in the field. Thanks for sharing!
