Locust leafminer

    Instead of cutting 'all' honeysuckle branches to the ground; would it still be effective to apply herbicide to just a few of the cut branches?

  • @nicholasittzes7224
    @nicholasittzes7224 18 дней назад

    Addendum to my previous comment: girdling requires that you cut around the stump, through the bark and the phloem, (the first layer of living vascular tissue which carries nutrients from the leaves down to the roots) but ideally not the xylem (the second area of living vascular tissue which carries water and nutrients from the roots up to the leaves). The xylem can be a few years of annual growth- the wood growth rings. If the xylem is left intact, the roots will be forced to feed the foliage, and get nothing in return. Btw, the girdle must be wider than a saw kerf, maybe an inch or more, to prevent the tree or bush from healing itself. Girdling is effective on many trees and large shrubs, including those which resprout when cut down.

That is a sad observation I have noticed. I also want to ask: I know bush honeysuckle has allopathic characteristics, but I haven’t found reliable information on the strength of that allopathy. Have you observed the effects of that in forests you have managed?

    TACF is going to obliterate the existence of the true American Chestnut Trees by releasing hybrid and genetically engineered trees into the environment. There will be no way to control cross-pollination. They need to stop all of this immediately and find another way to save this invaluable treasure and important part of our heritage.

    • @kyforesthealth
      @kyforesthealth 7 месяцев назад

      Good question- I'd say it depends on where you are located since honeysuckle leaf outs at different times in different places. In general, you want to avoid bud swell to leaf out. So, for me, March would be the wrong time to try this, I'd wait until summer (and fall is even better). Not that it might not work but your efficacy would likely be higher at different times of year. On the other hand, instead of a cut-stump application, you could cut now and then do a foliar herbicide spray on the new shoots that emerge in the later summer/ fall. Just a few thoughts!

    Electric chainsaw works great for bigger bushes. Don't have to fight trying to get gas chainsaws started. The constant hand sawing will catch up with you physically over time.....Small pick mattox will help with smaller bushes. Hit the base of bush and in soil around it, this will help loosen the roots. Also tool can be jabbed under roots and pulled, gives better grip than plant stem that may break.

      The electric chainsaw is also nice because it only runs when cutting and you don’t need ear protection. The gas chainsaw runs a lot more and you need ear protection but it cuts much faster than the electric saw. I have so much honeysuckle that the gas saw is what I use just because it’s faster. It also weighs less than my electric saw.

    I found spraying fungicide on plant for anthracnose disease almost doesn’t work. Especially when the disease grow inside stem/trunk. Please advise if you know any fungicide that work to cure inside tree , not just kill it outside of tree.

    • @kyforesthealth
      @kyforesthealth 7 месяцев назад

      You are right, the fungicide doesn't permanently prevent anthracnose in the tree- it is used mostly to protect newly emerging leaves and shoots that are most susceptible to infection (and hopefully decrease future infections because of this). What species are you working with and how have you been applying the fungicide? Most recommendations call for regular applications right when trees are leafing out (for example, at bud break, when leaves are half expanded, when leaves are fully expanded) and when the fungus is actively sporulating (typically when temps are in 50s-60s and weather is wet although this varies as there are actually many different fungal species that cause what we call anthracnose in different host plants). Also, what fungicide have you been using? There are many different ones on-label for anthracnose but could be worth trying a different one if you aren't seeing an impact. I've seen some branch infections in sycamore and dogwood but less common and I imagine those won't respond as well to this treatment not to mention trees may be too big to spray (pruning when possible may be a better option and then maybe future fungicide treatment since tree is being heavily impacted). For large trees like sycamore, systemic fungicide injections can be used in severe cases, typically conducted in the fall to provide trees with protection in the spring, here's more information hnr.k-state.edu/extension/horticulture-resource-center/common-pest-problems/documents/Sycamore%20Anthracnose.pdf. However, if you are seeing trunk issues, it makes me think of other fungi besides anthracnose as this is most commonly an issue on leaves and shoots (and occasionally branches on the most susceptible plants.) Hopefully this provides some additional ideas for future management and please reach out if you have other questions!

    Ok what i don't get is where is the blight now? How is it still killing trees? They have to travel miles between trees to hand polloinate them cause its to far for insects or wind to do it naturally. So hows the blight still finding these trees? I get the initial wave of blight just went tree to tree cause there were so many so close to one another. Small grove of them in Wisconsin that finally got it in the 90s i believe, states away from the next closest chestnut trees. Hows that blight move if its not insects or wind?

    • @kyforesthealth
      @kyforesthealth 10 месяцев назад

      Good question! Unfortunately, while this fungus only kills American chestnut, it can infect and live in a broad range of other tree species without causing this same level of damage. Oaks, hickories, even sumac have all been found to be infected. So while there are no large chestnut to spread it, it will persist in the environment in these other hosts and is not going anywhere long-term. You can read more here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chestnut_blight. In addition, there's a lot more small chestnut trees out and about than most people realize. While these never become large trees due to the blight killing them when they grow large enough, check out the TreeSnap app data and you can see lot of small bushy chestnuts: treesnap.org
