F-4 Wild Weasels!!!! I wasn't aircrew or anything, but I was with the 35th TFW (Provisional) at Shaikh Isa in GW1! I was an E5 with the security forces out on the perimeter most of the time, but we had F-4G Wild Weasels. BTW, I just purchased Barren Sead on audiobook on Audible. I remember one night I was on ECP to the air crew quarters, and one of the, I think they were called weapon system officers, after returning from a mission, stopped and asked me how things were going. It must have been three or four weeks into the air campaign, and I remember thinking he was just a few years older than I was. I was 25 at the time. But he stopped and asked me how things were going, which I thought was amazing since he was the one going out flying missions and putting himself in harm's way. And I told him that. I remember him saying that he had about 5 hours before they had to start getting ready for the next mission, and how tired he was, and that he couldn't talk very long, because he was super tired and needed to get as much sleep as possible. The one thing he did say that I remember to this day, and that struck me, was how tired he was of being shot at. I was amazed that this guy was even taking the time to talk to me at all. Thinking about it now while I'm listening to the podcast, it's funny but it feels like it was about 15 minutes ago.

Coral Sea, hmm. It's funny because I'm reading a series of books by David Cameron that tell the story from the Australian point of view of the fighting on New Guinea between Buna/Gona, up to Kakoda and Isurava, over and through the Owen Stanley mountains, and on down to Port Moresby. I guess I always looked at the Battle of the Coral Sea as being something for the Navy, kind of like Kasserine Pass was for the Army. You've got to learn to fight sooner or later. We might have got knocked down in both of those fights, but we got right back up and kept fighting. From the books I'm reading right now, the Owen Stanley mountains are not the kind of place you want to try to fight an overland campaign through or over. I think those mountains were one of the reasons why the Japanese were trying to sail around and invade by sea. However you look at it, Coral Sea stopped that. There were a lot of naval fights at Guadalcanal where we got our asses handed to us also, but in doing so we ultimately stopped the Japanese from doing what they originally set out to do. To answer your question about Coral Sea, Just like the fights at Guadalcanal, they were costly as hell, but we did divert the Japanese from what they were trying to do. So in that respect, I guess I would call those victories. At the very least the people we lost weren't lost for nothing. Their sacrifices were not in vain and meaningless.

I live in Columbus Ohio, I've been going to The National Museum of the United States Air Force since I can remeber. My grandfather worked at Wright-Patt during WWII, and I used to go there all the time with him when I was young. Now two of the F-4s from the base I was stationed at in GW1 are in the museum. An RF-4 and an F-4G Wild Weasel, so I go there to visit those jets several times a year. My elementary school principal was a B-26 Marauder pilot. Got called to his office one day (my grandmother was a teacher there), and I spent the day looking at his scrap books and photo albums and newspaper clippings from WWII and listening to his stories. My two take aways I remember were him saying they used to call the plane the Widow Maker, and a super sad story about his best friend that was killed when they were practicing flying low level over the water, and his friend turned too low and a wing hit the water and pulled the whole plane in, killing his best friend. I was maybe 10 years old, and my dad had showed me how to build and paint plastic 1/72 scale models. I built a 1/72 scale B-26 for my principal, Mr. Hinton. I was told when he passed away, he had kept the model on his dresser the whole time.

I'm with Eric on game style play as far as if I notice an opponent missing a benefit and stopping to point it out...mostly 😁. I must admit though, that there are those times when the competitive fangs come out, and that doesn't happen. Napoleon's quote: "Never interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake", sometimes that applies.

I'm still just at the begining of the episode, but too many times have I seen in games where people who have very little experience in a game, start to bitch that the rules need to be changed because they lost "this way or that way". Hangar 4...off to Audible to see if it's on audiobook! Discovered Silver Waterfall by Kevin Miller (to name just one audiobook, fantastic book btw) from this podcast! Ah, there it is ...purchased! I'm on book 2 (The battle for Isurava) in a 4 book series by David Cameron, on the battles in New Guinea. Between this podcast and The Unauthorized History of the Pacific War podcast, I've grabbed and listened to several audiobooks! I'm an Air Force Puke (dubbed so by my Marine son, lol), and served side by side with Marines in GW1 @ Shaikh Isa, 1/2 USAF 1/2 USMC. Marines had F-18s & A-6s. AF had RF-4s & F-4G Wild Weasels. I was only security forces and enlisted (E5), but have been an aviation fiend my whole life. My son used to know the CH53s by model type, and had some amazing videos of them. Those pilots are truly tremendous, I can't even put it into words. Looking forward to the audiobook! For people like myself, listening to discussions like this is very similar to the way you two described being in the squadron bar listening to senior officers relating "sea stories". I could listen to discussions like this endlessly. Just getting to the end of the podcast, and I can't wait to get to this audiobook. What an incredible discussion. 🥃🥃

I think the characters name is King. As he hops on the helicopter to leave, he shouts "Goodbye Motherf****rs!" Its short, to the point, appropriate and offensive. I always thought the Wild Weasels would be a good subject for a solo game. I was AF security forces, but grew up a huge aircraft aficionado, and built models of F-4s and A-6s as a kid. Now I go visit one of our F-4 weasels and one of our F-4 Recce ships in the National Museum of the United States Air Force, a 60 minute drive away in Dayton, OH three of four times a year. My son is a Marine (once a Marine always a Marine he says), out now, and he teases me as having been "an air force puke"! Oh heck, a book! Off to check to see if it's on audible! It was and I bought it. I subscribed to Apple+ for Masters of the Air, but haven't watched any yet. I find the older I have gotten, and ever since coming home from GW1, I've become super sensitive to war films. My son's 4 years service with the Marines just made it even worse. I know how lucky I was to make it home, and seeing films about those who didn't make it back just tears me up without any warning, most of the time. So I just avoid films, like a dork. What a great interview, I could actually feel this discussion.

Steve's in Cleveland, a couple hours north of me here in central OH (Columbus). P-40, my favorite WWII fighter. Not because it was good or great, but because it was what we had to hold the line with. That and the P-39. Sometimes you just have to make due with what you have. I bought 3 boxes of the P-40s, got two painted. One as British north Africa (what I think were the original shark mouths on P-40s) and one as Russian. My last box will be US and the classic shark mouths. John C. McManus wrote a fantastic trilogy of books (I audiobooked them) of the largely little known US fight in the Pacific, from the US Army point of view. Island Infernos, Fire and Fortitude and To The End of the Earth. In my humble opinion, Claire Chennault knew the limitations of the P-40s, and fought them using appropriate tactics in China. He had great success. The inexperienced US Army Air Forces at the outset of war, again in my opinion, tried to make the P-40 fit the tactics they wanted to employ, and paid a heavy price for their narrow view in tactics, in pilots and aircraft. Claire Chennault was quick to teach never fight (the zeros) fight. Never get into a turning fight with the zeros in a P-40.

Nate Rogers! The Gimpy Gamer! Nate is awesome! Sushi Suzuki... does he have an ace pack? 🤔 One of the things I thought was innovative about BRS was that the aircraft involved in the game were rated as a combination of both the aircraft and the pilot. Great listen on the interplay between the two. Hearing Doug's perspective is super interesting to listen to and one of the main reasons this is such a super podcast, in my humble opinion. Super interesting discussion to listen too. Hey! The Italians have come out! Doug said he'd feel a little better when he saw the Italians arrive! They're here! 🍻 Doug makes me feel like a little less of a dork for cutting the ace art out on the boxes and sleeving them, kinda like baseball cards. Just got McCampbell and Anabuki ace boxes today, and sure enough, no ace art. It's not a deal breaker for me by any means, but the ace art on the boxes was cool.

Yeah, we wish all of the new aces had box art, as well!!

Is the master aircraft list the one listed in the Wing Commander book as the Ready Room Aircraft list? Haven't played P-38s (because I haven't painted mine yet) and I'm trying to follow the three stat line options for the three different models. Whoa! BRS 2.0!? Really!?

Yes, the Wing Commander book has the December 2022 Master List in it (with a few typos of course!)

I just went all in on the Italian planes offered by Warlord, so I'm glad to hear the comments on them. Even got the bomber ace, which will be the first bomber ace for me. I'm curious about what the take on bomber aces is?😮

Most of the Bomber aces are good, because they have some key Ace Skills that make your entire attack formation better.

Did anyone come up with an end of show line? I guess I'll find out soon enough. "Alright, shows over, time to RTB motherf****rs." Hopefully that's offensive enough? 😄

🤣🤣 we came up with plenty of offensive ones! We might debut our new one after Adepticon 2024!

Oh yeah, I ordered the card pack. I feel like I already have about 85% of them, but its worth it to get them all. Kinda sounds like the aces maybe aren't selling? I realize I'm seeing this about 20-21 months late, but personally I like the fighter aces. I'm kinda on the fence still on the bomber "aces". I preordered the Midway bomber aces when Midway was released, from MM. However they were in preorder for so long, literally months, that I gave up on the preorder and cancelled it. I think it was 8 months. My first bomber ace will be the SM.79 ace, which I just ordered. I'll probably pick them up after I get caught up on the Tiffy and Frank squadron boxes. The outakes at the end, lol!😄

Great episode.👍 Thumbs up for Steve's rant.👍End of show line, maybe something with RTB? Aces are one of the things I like the best about this game. I've just ordered 11 aces to try to get caught up. Still got a few bomber aces to go, and I see there is a Tiffy ace & squadron now, as well as the same with a Frank squadron box. Here's what a dork I am, I cut out all the ace art on the boxes and put them in card sleeves. Some aces didn't get box art, not a big deal. I got the original metal Kates, and they came in one of the green reinforcement boxes. To me, the aces are the real people who lived the history the game tells the story of. That's just me though, personal preference. Just ordered two Sabre aces and two Mig aces (that part of the podcast just played asking what aces could be used with Sabres). Personally, I love the ace packs. I grew up reading paperback books of/by WWII aces, so I love the history. Never Forget 🎗️ 💝

The original BattleCry game from the Hasbro owned Avalon Hill, was the first game that my boys and myself played against one another. Memoir 44' continued that. Wings of War, now Wings of Glory, was another one that was a good introductory game.

LMAO at the opening! 😄 Chuck is an awesome guest! I have to laugh here, because a couple episodes back you guys were joking about the metal Stukas and Corsairs as a penalty "gift" for people. My metal Corsairs are done, and I'm currently working on metal Stukas! Blood Red Skies is like a box of chocolates, you never know what kind of material you're going to get the planes in! Lol! I've never worked with metal before, but I've made friends with it. Sorta 😐. Two more squadrons of metal after these, then I'm done with metal. Beaufighters and Me-410s my last 2 metal squadrons.

Slowly but surely catching up to current. Listening to all these podcasts is causing me to place more and more BRS orders to catch up to current gamewise too! Wow, shipping from Warlord is a little on the higher side, but not too bad. I still like that free shipping on $100+ orders from MM.
