    It’s worth noting that a Splitter operating via a 156MHz antenna is a good 10% down on efficiency when compared to AIS connected direct to an AIS antenna, tuned to 162MHz.

    I had a bad experience with DAVIS. I bought a new M15 sextant (on eBay) and the lens came loose from the 3X telescope. There was no way to fix it. I sent an email to Davis, including photos, and got no response. I sent it again and was told that customer service would respond. The answer came after I insisted, once again, and was "we don't have stock of this part. I asked for more information and no answer. They totally ignored me. So, a serious company is one that cares about the customer and this was not the Davis case with me.

    The issue of antenna height is of greater relevance when considering Class B AIS transmission, because at either 2 or 5W the effective reception range is directly dependent upon this (and may in any case be far less than the nominal VHF horizon).

    live in an area with spring water which is more on the acidic side , basically copper tanks lasted approximately 5 years, fitted a stainless 13 years ago and been no bother what so ever also stainless tanks are cheaper than copper, absolute no brainer for our situation

    A short, concise, and brilliant explanation in just one minute changed my mind about copper over stainless steel.

  • @humanityeliteschool9407
    @humanityeliteschool9407 Год назад

    As you know salty water corrodes copper. Officially 1/3 of the Earth population lives in coastal areas(<100km). About 5-10% has direct daily contact with salt water(sea or ocean) That's huge demand for SS304 and especially for SS316(heating, desalination+any marine equipment). My boat runs on steam power of salty water which it gets from solar heater which transfers heat to SS316coil, basically large solar putt putt boat, maintenance cost is lower than that of sails, so I am getting more benefit compared to wind energy(sails only) right now, though I am considering adding noiseless Archimedes wind turbine with chain transmission to props for night travel.

    Beware 'Davis' Sextants on Amazon: They're not sold by Davis but by some third party only vaguely (&falsely) identified as "Visit the Davis Instruments Store," This sort of Amazon sanctioned nonsense has led to fakes, broken products dumped as surplus - yet sold on Amazon as new by 'Brand: company name" Zero affiliation with the company. This is the review Amazon refused to run: Amazon's reason? "your review could not be posted to the website. It appears your review had feedback on the seller. " Where the seller's name usually is it says "Visit the Davis Instruments Store" But this takes you to a Seller; Direct 2 Boater. (No affiliation with Davis). I've been burned so many times by 'faked' manufacturer names on Amazon that I won't buy A Davis Mark 25 Sextant from Amazon. This site is selling it for $204 (Jan 2023) everywhere else , including Davis's site, it's $330. It's not a 'deal' there's probably something wrong. Because I've been burned in the past and Amazon won't fix this (One seller calling themselves "Janome” was selling broken surplus machines. Amazon only made them change the name to "Brand: Janome" (What do you think would happen if I started calling a business "Brand: Amazon"?? ) I won't buy anything from Direct 2 Boater or Davis via Amazon. (I just bought a $1200 pair of binoculars off Amazon because of this nonsense.) If you're a beginner at the sextant, as I am, you don't want to buy something that will take you months to realize it's not you." In some of the many reviews I've seen and read, so what would be the difference between the $300 Mark 25 and a $900 metal one? Apparently the M25 is about 10 arc sec less accurate. If the boat I'm crewing on (Pacific crossing) doesn't have a sextant on board I'll probably buy a Mark 25. Don't need it, but I think it would be a good skill to learn. The RUclipsr Rigging Doctor crossed the Atlantic using a Davis against his electronic GPS and was only a couple miles out. Hope this helps.

    Thank you for posting. Have you used the Mk 25 for star and planet shots?

    • @boatingequipmentreviews9478
      @boatingequipmentreviews9478 Год назад

      Extensively, yes. The light on the Mk25 makes it a bit quicker taking down readings, but I've also used the Mk15 a lot, and have a small torch around my neck. I'm old-school and generally prefer a split screen to the 'all-view' but for someone starting out and getting comfortable with the 'all-view' it's fine.

      I’m not keen on high mounted radar scanners on yachts. Who cares what’s 12 miles away? Much more interesting to know the 2-3 miles around you.

  • @jima4656
    @jima4656 2 года назад

    I find that with the mark 15, I have about 5-7 arc minutes of backlash. I need to always turn the micrometer in the same direction when taking a reading, or I miss by that much. Also, I check my index error before & after each reading, then take the average. I sometimes see a minute or two of difference between the two error checks. The vernier scale adds precision, but not accuracy. I really don't bother with it. Thanks for posting. Your descriptions of the differences were spot on.

    does it REQUIRE water to seal like the other gorilla glue? The instructions says WORKS under water and then says apply to CLEAN surface. NO where does it say REQUIRES water for the glue to bond. I wonder who wrote those instructions without understanding basic logic.

    • @boatingequipmentreviews9478
      @boatingequipmentreviews9478 2 года назад

      The only required maintenance is periodically exercising the valve open/shut a few times. That keeps the border between ball and surrounding area clear. Then on winter haul,out you’d expect to remove anything that’s built up, from the outside, as you would for any skin fitting and valve.

    How many blasts do you get ?

    • @boatingequipmentreviews9478
      @boatingequipmentreviews9478 Год назад

      Depends how high you can get the pressure. If you use the stand-by bike pump you only get a few seconds, but at least you can keep on pumping. If you put in 90psi it goes for ages. I haven’t actually tested that, because for fair science there are too many variables. How long each blast. Air temperature. Etc.

  • @sailingoctopus1

    When you are on an ocean passage, it's good to know what else is out there and it adds interest to dull night watches, so increased AIS range is beneficial. We have two masthead antennas, for redundancy, so there's no issue in having one devoted to AIS.

    • @boatingequipmentreviews9478
      @boatingequipmentreviews9478 Год назад

      It’s all about priorities. With a choice of only one antenna up at the highest point I’d opt for voice-optimised VHF first. If you’ve got space for two, lucky you. With a ketch aid put voice on the main mast and AIS on the mizzen.
