Topworking my ~ 9 yrar old Glenn mango on turpentine. Glenn doesn't do well here in SoCal. The main issue here is powdery mildew, so I've selected verieties that hopefully still hold fruit even with powdery mildew. I've also selected some verieties that are later season. I enjoy grafting and experimentation. Let's see what happens.

Glenn Mango on Turpentine - 8 years old - Southern California 10b - October
Просмотров 33511 месяцев назад
I used Florida growing principles that I learned from RUclips when I first started growing mangos and other fruits. After about four years, I learned from experience you'll probably do better doing the opposite of everything they do in Florida. This is my only tree that has lived to maturity that is on turpentine rootstock. This is a Florida mango tree. For the first four years, I used florida ...

    What part of SoCal are you in? Are you near the ocean? Do you have any problem with anthracnose? Do you give the mango tree(s) a lot of water? When do you get the budwood and when is the best time to do the grafting? I live in Orange County, in Anaheim. I'm just learning about mangos right now. Did the Glenn mango produce well for you? Did you like that mango? What kind of care and maintenance do you do - such as spraying, fertilizing, etc? Thanks.

    • @tinyjungle_
      @tinyjungle_ Месяц назад

      @ocneal near the Buena Park mall 15 miles from the ocean and no issues with anthracnose. Only issue here is PM whicg is one of the reasons I'm selecting for later season varieties and varieties that still hold fruits even with PM. Water young trees a lot more than older trees, but mango trees generally don't need a lot of water , especially if you mulch. I order budwood in summer when mangos start to push new growth. If you start to see buds swelling in summer that's a good time to graft. The Glenn doesn't do well here because it's prone to PM and is an early season mango. You can still fruit it but it's more trouble than it's worth in my opinion. I do no special care except I protect young green trunks from the sun and wind. No spraying anything or even fertilizing. I continually mulch and water about once a week when the tree is actively growing. I don't water in winter either. Mulch Mulch Mulch.

    • @tinyjungle_
      @tinyjungle_ 11 месяцев назад

      Thanks Rich. Only wish it made fruit bigger than a medium sized lemon. I've never fertilized it. Just lots and lots of much. It would be considerably bigger if I didn't try to use Florida tipping practices the first several years. Now I only do major pruning one time a year when I harvest the fruits. The late summer early fall flush seems to be sufficient. Now I want to graft a top tier variety that's a little more vigorous. Would love to put some size on this tree so I can get good fruit production.

    • @RichsTopGardening
      @RichsTopGardening 11 месяцев назад

      Yes, I think the Florida tipping practice here is a horrible idea on younger trees. I think your plant is at a great size to get full size fruits. PM and fungal issues are likely hampering that. What varieties are you growing so far?

    • @tinyjungle_
      @tinyjungle_ 11 месяцев назад

      @RichsTopGardening right now I only have the Glenn and three manila seedlings in the ground. I do have a small collection of other seedlings like sweet tart, cotton candy and ataulfo. I've lost a handful of florida grafted varieties over the years. Orange sherbet, Sugarloaf, Coconut cream, Valencia pride.

    • @RichsTopGardening
      @RichsTopGardening 11 месяцев назад

      @tinyjungle_ reach out to me next season in late spring or summer. I'll take a few glenn scions for a scion swap. There are some varieties i have in mind that may fit the bill for what u want depending on taste preference. It will be a good experiment in your area.
