Why you should prepare your home for wildfire: A side by side burn of two homes
Просмотров 9928 дней назад
This time lapse tells the story of two homes fate to wildfire. It compares the impact of embers on a home built to the Wildfire Prepared Home standard and one built to typical construction. Thanks to IBHS (Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety) for bringing this demonstration to Fire Safe Marin's Ember Stomp Festival in September. Find out which stands up to the test!
Could It Happen Here?
Просмотров 295Месяц назад
Today’s wildfires burn hotter, spread faster, and are more destructive than anything we have seen before. With fires burning to our north and south, Marin Wildfire’s Executive Officer Mark Brown is often asked, “Could it happen here in Marin County?” This 7 minute video answers this question by looking at Marin's history of wildfires and the factors that determine a fire pathway, intensity and ...

Windsor locks is kinda cooked (Thanks for explaining, I saw a red flag warning today!)
One day you'll find out the hard way -Australian
Did you fully enclose the soffit by placing fiber cement board between the gutters and the end of the rafters? I only saw that you placed panels under the gutters. Did u leave the gutters attached to end of the rafters or did u remove the gutters to nail up panels on the end of rafters?
Excellent presentation, the best I’ve ever seen. Are you using goats, etc. to get rid of excess brush? What about controlled burns to get rid of brush and duff, reduce disease and pests, and return nutrients to the soil?
Keep up the good work. One issue I have seen is some propety owner say it will never happen here, or value unmanaged vegetation as natural.
Thank you for showing this, it was very informativ 💞💞A hope that never happen it is so dry out there🙏🏽🙏🏽🥺🥺
Glad you found it informative! ☺ It’s always good to be prepared-hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
O'Reilly Road
Why is this product still being sold in California? For that matter, why is it being sold anywhere by big box retailers? This foam burns like gasoline. A fireplace ember would likely set a self sustaining fire in the gutter that would spread to the roof.
Thanks for the advice❤
6.6K views and 20 likes...?? Liar liar these trees do explode into fire...!!
Hi! We are writing an article about this for our local paper? Would you be able to offer us the picture you have of a deck on fire for use?
Hi! Yes, we would be happy to help. Please send us an email at info@firesafemarin.org
Why you making videos about something you clearly have little to no knowledge on? It’s people like you making other countries think all Americans are ignorant and self centered jfc
👌🏽
I don't know what the FFs are doing but it took way too long to get water on the fire. And yes, Italian cypress and juniper are the worst things to have next to a house. FF of 35 years
Well, I guess I'm not planting bamboo! Thank you for the video!
"How a single ember can burn up a cypress" *proceeds to use a road flare for several seconds* That said you probably did convince me not to use this as a privacy wall in Phoenix.
Great information for everyone, not just those in Marin County. Thanks for making these videos.
Great information. I'm in an extreme fire danger area and am making lots of changes. I want my home to survive.
We are happy to help! 😊 If there are any topics or questions you would like us to cover, please send us an email info@firesafemarin.org

Greetings thanks for sharing this experiencing I almost buying 3 Italian Cypress trees what trees should i buy can you advise me to buy for Felton PA many thanks
Probably the best video I have seen on this topic. Thank you! I will be busy this next week...
We are so glad you found it informative!
What's code/recommendation for the distance an above ground propane tank should be from a home or structure? My concern is heat from fire causing pressure to build and the pressure relief valve opening.
Hi there. The required distance will be subject to your local building codes. We typically recommend 30 ft minimum. And of course, maintain horizontal and vertical clearance of 10ft from any combustibles.
@@FIRESafeMARIN thanks! I'm in washington I believe code is 25ft, but I also feel like California is ahead of the curve on addressing these items, so I'd rather future proof rather than build to a code that will be superceded in a few years. Thanks for the input, your videos have been an incredible wealth of practical knowledge.
Super helpful video. Thank you!
We are glad it was helpful!
This PSA should have a lot more likes. These brave men & women of our fire depts deserve more credit for trying to keep us & our property & environment safe. We should all educate ourselves more about fire safety & better prepare for fire disasters.
We couldn't agree more! Thank you for the support 🙂
Thank you so much for doing this for us. I feel much more confident about understanding what is appropriate in these stressful situations. So helpful
So glad you found it helpful. 😁
Thanks for the video and it is great to see that you have used a non-combustible panel to enclose the eave. My concern is that given you have installed 1/16" screen on the backside of the Hardie panels, painting the panels with a sprayer may have clogged those 1/16" holes. I've seen a number of instances of a painting crew essentially eliminating the eave venting due to use of a sprayer on 1/8" screening. 1/16" screening will likely clog more readily. I'd recommend using a roller for the vent hole portion of the panel.
Hi Tom, Thank you for that question, that's a good point. I was just up at the site today and looked to see if our sprayer had clogged up the mesh. It did not. We spray multiple light coats when we spray and the thickness of the fiber cement soffit was enough to shield the mesh on the inside. I tried to take a photo to share but my phone camera couldn't focus that close up. This is a good thing for people to consider when they are DIY'ing. Those sprayers are tricky to apply even coating without drips and often beginners will over spray creating drips and problems like the one you brought up. If you are doing this work yourself, consider using a roller and brush. Kazoo Shearman, Managing Owner of Shearman Builders
@@kazoostudioseast6997 Glad to hear that. Overall, it looks like an excellent quality installation. Impressive that you used both construction adhesive and fasteners to attach the panels. Keep up the great work!
Woody Harrelson has a DIY channel! Awesome!
😂
They are LESS flammable than many other coniferous trees. They survived fire in Spain and Italy. Always plant 20 to 30 feet from home.
Thank you for helping me. I had a red flag warning it’s at 5:00 PM
This is one of the best videos I have seen so thank you. My insurance company won’t renew in October 2024 unless I get a wildfire prep certificate. Our tree canopies need to be 10 feet apart and our neighbors have trees right next to ours. We live in Westlake Village (a suburb in SoCal).
They usually architectural and in gardens and next to pools and very rarely used as a hedge. What a crock!
Fantastic Video!!! thank you so much...
Very helpful information🙏🏾many thanks
wow. i did not know about the in turns and out turns. thanks for that. i carry face masks and a chain saw when i travel during fire season.
Thank your for the information.
Very well done. Thank you, Mark Brown!
Absolutely true & don't build your house in a valley draw.
Nope
Good to know thanks
Thank you so much! Great advice for dealing with wildfires for hillside communities..: )
Thank you for these videos!
Excellent advice. Thanks.
Good reminder for people. Just cleared mine a few days ago. Removed a very old rotten fruit tree next to it and like you made a 15 ft space around the tank. Youre in Cali? My home owners insurance was canceled, 95658. Priced out at $550 a month and $20k deductible so taking extra precautions with the defensible space. Also cleared around the well head.
Keep up the good work. Yes - We are in California. I’m sorry about the insurance. Check back soon. We are working on doing a panel on insurance in June.
Todd Lando!!! Thanks much for your service to our community!
lol, please educate yourself and remove this nonsense. We call it crowning. In intense fires the entire crown of the tree can ignite instantaneously. On steep slopes and gullies this can cause a chain reaction resulting in flames hundreds of feet high which cause fires to spread incredibly fast. Planting eucalyptus in Spain, Greece, turkey and California etc is shear madness. They will often naturalise and displace local flora.😮
Good information but it could really use editing down and an update at the end.
This was one of our first Zoom presentations when we went on line in 2020. Keep checking out our other videos - long and short form.
