Watching improv is like reading lorem ipsum. Cruel & unusual. Maybe improv 10:02 is too comfortable. Perhaps stage comedy involves a persona too but indirectly aims at an unspoken or unspeakable idea... and it is funny. The juxtaposition of comfort with shared voyeuristic drama, allows uncensored persona to share real ideas. Sometimes laughter is to release built up tension. Maybe overcoming mental blocks. Kind of like a pastor, a persona encouraging non-judgemental authenticity. I'm a dull audience member type- so maybe I should practice improv in day to day life. I think a willingness to be truthful and have most "scenes" end in non-sequitors is okay. As long as we aren't callous, or unkind, improv seems like something for the street, because "authentic improv" would need to risk alienating any given audience, since it would need to be first true. Improv doesn't have an audience. Improv folks could try standup as a troup and riff a bit between small standup sets. Guarantee Sam is infinity more enjoyable to be around than Mark. I'll never get past the way he sounds for a guy from New Orleans. Just too on.
