    My biggest hurdle right now is.... how do I know if a word is foreign to Japan? With that being the deciding factor, it's difficult to tell currently. That said, is it "bad" to write foreign words in hirigana? or just weird?

    • @KenseiSensei

      @@retropulse03 You just have to know what word is foreign by practice. It’s not “bad” to write foreign words in hiragana because it’s still legible. However, it “should” be written in katakana.

    The part about radicals is slightly misleading. Each kanji has one and only one radical. A radical is simply a way to index the characters. This is also a thing that goes back to China. They are the Kangxi Radicals (康熙部首). While it's true that 亻and 木 are both radicals, the radical for 休 is 亻only. Other kanji may have 木 as a radical e.g., 栄. Kanji are actually made of components. Exactly one of which is the "assigned" radical for that kanji (even if the other components are the radical for different kanji). The primary use case for radicals is to index the characters in a dictionary. You can look up 休 only by going to the 亻section of the dictionary. You won't find it under the 木 section.

    Has anyone in Japan ever talked seriously about simplifying the Japanese writing? I've pondered this for a bit and often come back to the same conclusion, it seems unnecessary to use all three. I'll explain. The oldest of Japanese writing is in the form of barrowed script, Kanji from China. Along the way, both hiragana and katakana were easier to learn and simplified. However, I see Kanji used with Hiragana script written over the Kanji, which to me is redundant. If using the simpler Hiragana in addition to a Kanji character is deemed necessary, then why use it at all, if the Hiragana make more sense to the average Japanese reader? There are over 2,200 Kanji characters that must be learned by grade school students, over 12 years. But when you ask many Japanese adult people if they remember all the Kanji, many say, no. I also argue that Kanji if far more complicated to learn than Hiragana, far more strokes in most Kanji, and far less strokes in hiragana. For example, I wrote this not long ago... Here is my question; in writing, お願いします instead of おねがいします, why use the Kanji 願 for ねが (ne ga, or nega) when it seems simpler and easier to simply white out the hiragana form, ねが instead? Also, why then use the Kanji form, 願 , if for example (as shown here in this video), that the hiragana form, ねが , is written above the kanji? Why then use the Kanji? It seems unnecessary and redundant. I don't get it. Yeah, I get that the Kanji is one character, but it is not a simpler character to write than the two characters for 'ne' and 'ga,' or ねが. That was an example of why I argue that Kanji is redundant; if one is going to use it, but then place Hiragana or Katakana script over the Kanji to convey the meaning, then why use Kanji at all? Again, I argue that forcing students to learn an ancient script because of some 'tradition,' it just forces students to learn something entirely difficult rather than focusing on other more important learning lessons. It would seem, to me, far easier to learn Hiragana, even if it adds a few more characters at the ease of less strokes than to use a complicated Kanji that most Japanese forget over time. And again, I get why the Hiragana and Katakana are used, but since most of the Katakana used is so 'normalized' today in Japan, this too seems unnecessary.

      It doesn’t really matter but if you’re writing a quiz, you should simply ask your teacher/instructor that is assigning the quiz. If I were to assign the quiz, I would tell my students to write the onyomi in katakana and kunyomi in hiragana. But take my word with a grain of salt because it depends on who’s giving the test.

    Can compound kanji be read in just it’s Kun-Yomi form? If not then why can’t it be? Wouldn’t it just be easier to read it the way Japanese people speak it sense you’re Japanese already speaking the Japanese language? Why read it in a similar way that Chinese people read it. I understand historical reasons from way back when but it’s the 21st century, wouldn’t it be easier to read every compound Kanji in Kun-yomi?

    • @KenseiSensei
      @KenseiSensei Год назад

      I understand where you're coming from. However, from a native Japanese speaker's perspective, kunyomi isn't any "easier" than onyomi and vice versa. They are both Japanese pronunciations. If I were to make an analogy to English, it's like saying why don't we spell "rain" as "rane" because words like "sane" and "lane" are spelled that way. Compound kanji are just a term/word. So it can take on either form of pronunciation as I said in the video. There's no rule to this, and you just have to know which form to use by memorization.

(if it doesnt make sense, heres an example. so the onyomi of the kanji tree is boku AND/OR moku, which one of the two should i use? or the kunyomi is ki AND/OR ko, which one should i use out of the two?)

    • @KenseiSensei
      @KenseiSensei Год назад

      There is no rule of knowing when to use the onyomi and kunyomi. You simply have to know the word by memorization. Kind of like how in english we have homophones like “Allowed” and “Aloud”. There’s no rule to the spelling but it’s just written the way it is.
