a few months ago, a dear friend of mine took his own life. the day i heard about it, i found this song. it summed up how i felt near perfectly, especially in that last verse and chorus. don mclean will forever hold a place in my heart. miss you, elijah. this boat will always carry two.

Incredibile song and performance

My 11th grade English teacher had this album playing frequently as we walked into the classroom. I asked him about it and he told me he thought it was some of the best lyrics he'd ever heard. I bought the album and fell in love! Every track is perfect and memorable.

When I was 14 years old I received this album as a gift. I memorized "what a shame" and "if we try" and they have been in my head ever since. Eventually some of my own music was published. That was 45 years ago. But today I still cover those two songs for friends. They are part of who I am. I will probably be humming them on my last breath. Thank you Don. From my heart thank you.

I just saw this happen and googled RACOON WALKING ON HANDS because I thought I was losing my mind THANK YOU for this video!

My brother is a Vietnam vet now in his late '70s and sadly, mostly senile. Though he didn't lose his brother (me) he, like the old man in this song, can't remember having been in Vietnam. That really is a blessing as he suffered with PTSD for years after he came home, suffered with drug abuse and suicidal ideations, then finally met the right woman who slowly brought him back to life. Unfortunately he can't remember much of that either.

I know some songs of Don McLean by heart, like this,`The pride parade`,`Vincent`,`Till tomorow`,`Crossroads`,`Homeless brother`,and more. And when I milk my cows by hand, I sing all of them. I cannot imagine a time better spent, then this way.

This is from a "perfect" album. One great cut after another. No weak points. Some argue that song lyrics are never good poetry. And then there's this song and this artist. This song is a masterpiece.
