Monolith

Poetry and monologues.
⚡️
I’ve been working in the TV industry for almost 20 years - making films in various forms and roles throughout. Monolith is a culmination of everything I’ve learned, from writing and directing, to shooting, editing and even location managing.
⚡️
This channel celebrates the spoken word in a cinematic way that isn’t just navel-gazing. I believe there is room to be creative and visually engaging without taking away from the words themselves.
⚡️
Finally, Monolith is a place to stand tall, even though I’m often feeling scared to be alone. I invite all of you to write and to collaborate as Monolith grows into a place for stories and performance at all levels.

Be mindful of your thoughts - a cinematic poem
Words have always fascinated me -- it's little surprise that I created this channel in order to share them. Yet, I have a strange relationship with words. Poems and screenplays, on my best days, help me to organise thoughts and feelings about the world and my place in it in -- often in a more romantic fashion than the reality itself. With time and the English language, I find ways to create beauty and meaning from moments that may have been confusing when they were simply moments alone.
Some days, however, words are not enough. They can feel recycled or unoriginal or overused or downright useless. Moreover, they can be confusing. When I tell you that 'It's raining', I don't even know what ...

Stress is killing you - a cinematic poem
Просмотров 224Год назад
Stress is an abstract concept. One definition is 'how we react when feeling under pressure or threatened.' It's easy to forget that 'being threatened' is more than just a physical attack. While the external world can be stressful, it's how one chooses to react and interact with the world that affects the level of stress they experience. If that really is true, then surely we pose the greatest t...
I was hit by a car - a personal story
Просмотров 2732 года назад
A decade after being hit by a car, I witnessed a miracle. It wasn't the kind that turned water into wine, but rather something that happened inside then spread outwards and into the world. 'Hit and Run' is a true story about a time in my life that I lied about to myself and others because I didn't know how to deal with it. Through fostering strong and honest relationships, taking part in self-h...
The pandemic almost destroyed me - a cinematic poem
Просмотров 3732 года назад
Have you ever woken up and felt the weight of the world on your shoulders? That's not how it should be. It is not your responsibility to hide away because other people say 'the world is a scary place and you should be scared.' Get out there and find out for yourself. 'A Life Unlived' is a cinematic poetry film, partially inspired by a new travel incentive from the German government, whereby res...
If The Batman wrote poetry.

Imagine being aware of your problems, and never even trying to fix them. 'A Ghost of You' is a cinematic poem about the fear I feel regarding my own behaviour, set in the world of The Batman (starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves). When I sat down to write this poem, I imagined how life would be if I, like Bruce Wayne, continued to retreat into the darkness refusing help from fr...

Sometimes I retreat into that melancholy space where you only exist in my mind. A cinematic poem written and performed by Craig Young. 'Rough sheets' is a poem for everyone who has ever laid alone on summer nights - listening to music as a way to steer thoughts and dreams while creased, hot sheets stick to flesh. It’s about longing. ⚡️ The film was shot on a Sony FX3 with G-Master zoom lenses. ...
The Return (a cinematic poem)
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.2 года назад
‘What happens after we're dead?’ A cinematic poem written and performed by Craig Young. Some people see death as the end - a closing door to a finite series of breaths punctuated by moments of joy and sadness. I like to think there is something beyond ‘the void’, yet not an entirely unknown place to us. What if death isn’t just the end, or even the beginning? What if death is a return to someth...
Hey Craig, first I have a heard about your drunken escapade! I have actually been run over 3 times,!! didn't break anything, but one time I was hit by a speeding taxi while running across the road from the Butchers arms in Swinton with 2 bottles of Pils in my hands because the nadgers pub was packed so it was easier to get beer from across the road, anyway i saw the headlights but didn't realise the taxi was going about 60 miles an hour when it came suddenly upon me(instant Judo experience kicked in ,lean in and roll your body) i rolled straight over the taxi and landed on one of the bottles, bit of a gash in my side but I got up still holding the bottles, my mate panicked liked mad before i just sat down and thanked my lucky stars, ambulance came and blue lighted me to the hospital, after waiting for an hour I discharged myself and went to the wishing well night club in Swinton!! next day I was in agony haha, will have to have a meet up and talk about it, miss you & ya mum and Darryl, take care and hope everything going OK for you xx
Very profound. You have a way with words. I liked when you spoke in another language ... it sounded magical whatever it was. I have a playlist of some very simple rhyming poems. I wonder if you would like to see some of them sometime? ruclips.net/p/PLy1yOsNCtsxPfgxux_hqq5evbekET079q
I really appreciate this comment. Thanks for the kind words and for the subscribe! I’m excited to check out your stuff too 🙏🏼
Amazing poem, as always. It feels very intimate, as if I'm there, in front of you and you are saying all these words straight into my heart. I'm listening to you so carefully, holding my breath. I can almost smell the ginger and lemon you had put in your cup that morning. You are right, our thoughts and words are not our own, but it's what you can do with them matters. The way you spin an elegant cobweb of letters, channeling your thoughts through a digital machine is a true art. The music is a great analogy to everything you've said - there are only ever 12 notes and it seems everything I improvise on the piano has already been written by someone… And yet, masterpieces will be created until the end of time.
Wow, what a nice comment. This is exactly what I want from this channel - to inspire people to write their own forms of poetry and to have fun with words. Thank you for this! (See you in the kitchen in a minute, ha).
oh Wow! loving the last shot.
Thanks for watching and commenting. What about the first shot?
Dope!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏼
Beautifully shot as always. I love thinking about the words you use in your poems. So thought-provoking. Also, the creaking sounds coming from (I assume) the ice were a really nice touch! 😊
Thanks, Ma. I’m glad you always enjoy these. The ice noise was created using a paper bag, then pitching it down. It’s not exactly accurate, but I was going for a certain tone and feeling.
Super cool!!!
Very happy that you like it! That’s high praise from the queen of drama herself 🙏🏼
loved it
Thank you!
One of my favorite poems, for sure. Your performance, sound choices, lighting, the poem itself combine to create one incredible peace of cinematic art. You are so captivating and so watchable. Can’t wait to see more and more of your talented work here ❤️
Thank you for such a beautiful comment. This was a fun one to light and set up, as my bathroom is so small. There are lights and a camera and microphone millimetres outside the frame 😅 Thanks again for watching. I’m excited to release more now!
Yet another thought-provoking poem that makes you question your life and how you’re living it. For those of us who can relate to this then be brave and ‘take action’. Another brilliant performance! ❤
Thanks, Ma. I’m glad you enjoyed it and I hope it inspires many people as it has done for you 🙏🏼
Our bodies are such powerful machines.. generally speaking, so much un tapped potential that isn't fully understood..
You’re right, Chris. We are physically capable of incredible things. The flip side is that our bodies are able to hold onto experiences and trauma in ways the mind doesn’t always seem to understand. Breathing, exercise, yoga, whatever - it all helps me to reconnect with my body, which of course helps me to identify what’s going on. Thanks for watching!
It can be immensely difficult confronting and dealing with things we’ve buried. When we feel ashamed of something it’s all too easy to push it from our minds or as you said ‘create a narrative’ which, over time, we can end up actually believing. Miracles come in lots of different packages and this story is a good example of that. Thank you for being brave, taking responsibility for your actions and sharing with us. ❤
Thank you for taking the time to comment 😀
You scare me. I spent rather a lot of time wondering if you'd killed the woman you describe before I realized why it was called The Batman. The angle, the lighting, your voice, your words - everything about this performance is pure perfection. It feels like a truly finished product, and it's the best thing I've seen in a long time. It's difficult to stop watching you.
What an incredible compliment. I’m really happy that you enjoyed this and appreciated the amount of work I put into it. I’m so glad it is still finding an audience! Thanks again! I hope you like the future releases 🙏🏼
Wow, yet another intense and thought-provoking video accompanied by such perfect music. Along with the words of the poem, the serene and beautiful footage really does show there’s a world out there. A world just waiting, begging even, to be explored. We live in a society where so many of us are not really living, myself included, but we just get on with our lives, accept what we think is the norm and bitch and moan and do nothing about it. We need to live in the moment and embrace the beauty that surrounds us. That’s my plan anyway! 🙏
That’s a great plan. So get out there and see it through 🙏🏼♥️
Beautiful as usual my friend! I love these!
Thank you, Rob. I‘m so pleased that you like this. I actually watched your Dehancer video before putting this out ☺️
@@monolithpoem beautifully shot and the words themselves being very visual, dark, yet in the end inspiring - really lovely stuff! Oh wow that's awesome! :)

I came here to see the quality of the Fx3 and my day was not only filled with the obvious realization that it’s a crazy piece of gear…. Sony rules! But the art and the message of this project is amazing. good job on everything….really. -Bukas Sīgurø
Thank you for this message, Bukas. I’m really happy that you got a lot from this video, and not just something technical. Although you are right, the FX3 is an incredible piece of equipment. Thanks for watching and for the nice comment!
What a beautifully haunting poem. The whole scene and darkness presented visually alongside the acting is simply perfection. It draws you, in feels real! Please share more and incredible job!
Thank you for such a thoughtful comment. I really appreciate this! I hope more people like you find and share this! 🙏🏼♥️
Your videos just hit the spot. Cinematic and immersive with words and images. This is my fave out of the three you have. Keep at it mate! Looking forward to the next one.
Thank you for this! It’s really nice to know you enjoyed them, but also which you liked the most. Thanks again and keep up with the great content 🙏🏼
A sumptuous treat to the eyes, ears and the bits in between. Your channel proves a wonderful place to retreat to
What a comment. Thank you, guys! Good luck with the new album! ♥️
Spellbinding
Thank you! 🙏🏼♥️
I got chills! To see how your expression changes at different moments... the vulnerability and honesty in your performance create a level of intimacy that goes beyond reading words on a page. And the shots of the lake are moody and lush, I feel transported to that melancholic space.
Chills are good ☺️ Thank you for this comment. The very reason I started Monolith was not to simply ‘recite’ poems, but to perform them. I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it 🙏🏼
Pretty certain this would be the mental struggle in worlds that batman endures.. you show a great understanding of your arts pal and your execution of it is spot on.. your take on batman was quite chilling! Loved it!
Thank you for this wonderful and thoughtful comment. It’s a big ask, the seven minute monologue. Thank you for watching and thinking about it. It really means a lot!
Returned to this one again, really lovely, beautifully shot.
Thank you! The location was such a gift - as always picking the right place at the right time of day was crucial. Thanks again 🙏🏼
Didn't expect that.
In a good way? ☺️
@@monolithpoem I will leave that mystery open. Love always.
Amazing work! Sound and video and poem are so harmonic with each other!
Thank you, Alona! I really appreciate your support and kind words 🙏🏼♥️
Absolutely epic, wow. What a performance and the visuals and sound are phenomenal. I honestly forgot who I was watching as you performed that. I was thinking "this guy's got chops". Love this.
What an absolutely brilliant comment! Thank you, Dave. I worked so hard on this, and everything you said really means a lot to me (particularly ‘the chops’ 😂).
I agree! Absolutely gripping, edge-of-your-seat, dark, intriguing and made for Hollywood! I watched it on my tv and got a real cinema experience! You’re a truly multi-talented person. Thank you for sharing this amazing film!
Made for Hollywood ☺️ Thanks for the comment and support. I loved sharing the film and have lots more ideas for the future 🙏🏼♥️
Wow, what a ride. Great poem, beautiful video, and awesome sound. I loved every minute of it.
Thanks! The sound design was really fun - so many elements to create the feeling of that world. Thanks for the comment 🙏🏼
Holy shit ♥️
That’s exactly right.

That’s what I like to hear!
Stunning
Thank you! 🙏🏼♥️
What a wonderful talent you are, Craig. Stunning words, spoken so well. You've always had the skill of essence capturing. Keep it up mate, you're offering the world something special here. All the love and support. See you soon x
This is such a nice comment. Thanks for taking the time to watch and also for writing such beautiful words. Your music always inspires me, so thank you for that 🙏🏼
Beautiful 💛
Thank you, Alona! ♥️
The emotion in your voice depicts something deep underneath its surface, much like the lake hiding a myriad of things below its own. It allows our imaginations to wander and maybe relate to something within our own lives, perhaps from the past or present. This brought tears to my eyes and is truly beautiful. Yet another brilliant recital accompanied by stunning scenery. Thank you 🙏
Good thinking! I never thought about it like that, but I’m happy to take the credit 🙏🏼♥️
Such an amazing video. Great shots, beautiful poetry and a captivating performance. It takes serious talent and skill to create all of that by yourself - filming, writing, acting, editing, and all such high quality. You’re an inspiration!
Thanks, Diana! It’s definitely a challenge ☺️ I really enjoy making them though - every part of the process. You forgot one thing: sharing the films is also part of it, and it’s such a joy 🙏🏼
Of all the amazing stuff you’ve worked on over the years this is truly one of the finest. Just beautiful 🖤
That’s such a brilliant comment and a compliment I am very happy to receive. I really appreciate the support, man 🙏🏼♥️
Top work, as always. Where's the location? Looks a treat. X
It’s Stahnsdorf cemetery near to Berlin. Such a beautiful and atmospheric place. It was used in the Netflix show, ‘Dark’. Thanks for the comment! 🙏🏼
Absolutely loved this, great moment of reflection.
Yes! Thank you, Amelia. I’ve been so excited to share this 🙏🏼
Loved this. Beautifully done.
Thank you! It took a while to figure out the format - and also to light and film myself at home during the lockdown! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
I never thought poetry was something interesting. Well this changed my man. Great video. Love the music and footage!
This comment! Thank you so much. I’m the same - although I do like poetry but get so easily bored. I wanted to make use of the RUclips platform while celebrating the spoken word. Thanks again anyway!
Very powerful and thought provoking. I’m going to rewatch it a few times, I think. Beautifully shot too!
Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment on the video. It’s so nice to know this is connecting with people! I can’t wait to share more with you.
