Great job! I did a 2ZR swap in my Yaris (I think I might be the first in CA that's CARB legal) and was debating going 2GR but I really wanted a manual. Glad you're able to make it work with the auto and sounds like you don't mind swapping the gearbox in/out every couple years for smog. Aside from the Evora, the only other 2GR/MT that I found could be CARB legal would be from the Tacoma, which I assume BAR would say no to since it's a truck. Even if they said yes there's more complications with that setup: FSE, longitudal mounting, gearbox, d4-s, etc.

Congratulations! If you do end up going MT what's your plan for bi-annual smog? Have you considered the changes needed to swap stuff over beyond the trans/mount (harness/ecu/etc...?) I looked into going 2GR/MT CARB but haven't talked to the ref yet, as the sourcing for the components would have to be from an Evora (engine/trans/ecu/emissions/etc.) and the price is prohibitive. Have considered talking to the BAR about cross sourcing the engine/trans but haven't gotten there yet.
For bi-annual smogs Id most likely just be swapping back and forth with manual and auto. Id have to develop some sort of "package" for each setup, to easily swap between the two. Which yes that would include harness, mounts, etc for each package. A 2GR/MT BAR setup is only achievable with the Evora stuff like you mentioned. However, the engine/trans doesn't NEED to be from an Evora from my understanding, since a 2GR is a 2GR. BAR mainly looks at the ECU VIN and checks if your configuration matches the VIN. From my research on the Evora stuff, the Evora uses the same manifolds as the Camry, so if you can somehow prove they are the same to BAR, that can most likely be sourced easily. The ECU and stuff would definitely be the trickiest part. The Evora expects a few chassis sensors (yaw sensor, ABS, etc) to stay happy. Without those the ECU would throw codes.
@@maxsehic Would love to watch more if you decide to set the conversion packages up. Thanks for the detailed response, yeah the CAN issues are a problem, though yaw sensors and stuff aren't too bad to add. Integration into my car will be annoying (ZZW30).
@@puredrifter125 Yeah the spyder is definitely more difficult for the 2GR. BAR stuff gets more complex when you're doing a swap into an OBD2 chassis as well.

I love my 2GR-GE powered Camry! Charcoal grey XLE, black painted stock 17"wheels 🛞 , it looks so sleek. The big boy 3.5l reminds me of Toyota's version of a old school 5.0 Mustang. Just a big torquey motor that revs high too 😮

This exhaust sounds great, but you need to work on where to place the microphone and use one of those covers that goes over the mic that clears up some of the static. I want to hear this thing and all its glory!

If I really feel the need to operate it “manually” I will most likely wire the MR2 auto shifter in to have a “sport mode” then add some sort of paddle shifter mechanism to the steering wheel.
I have a quick question. I read your post on mr2OC and saw that you integrated the abs wiring into your harness and was wondering if the abs is needed in order to state bar the car. Did you use the avalon's abs pump? I figured the abs needs to be connected and wired because it might throw a abs code and that might affect the outcome of the state bar. Thanks in advance.
No it is not needed to BAR the car. The U151e transmission does not have a speedo drive gear and because my car is a 91 with a mechanical speedo, I had no way to generate a speed signal for the ECU. I opted to use an ABS pump and add ABS wheel speed sensors to generate the speedo signal as I eventually want to add ABS to the car. The pump is there solely to generate that speedo signal currently. Temporarily using the Avalon pump, will move to a Spyder pump eventually.

Is it legal to do the swap with an auto, then later swap in the manual after getting the bar sticker? I've swapped my auto to manual in my old mk1, and no one at smog made a fuss, but that was over two decades ago and with a 4age engine.
If you BAR the engine change with the auto that’s the“legal” configuration. However it works the other way around as well, if you BAR it with a manual that’s the legal config. Diverting from whatever your BAR certification states makes the configuration no longer legal. In my case I’ll be BARing the car with the auto so that would be my legal baseline. If I swapped in a manual or something later I would no longer be able to get the car smogged or anything unless I return back to the auto.

Can you link the MR2 gauged to the 2GR. Because I heard you have to get aftermarket ones or else you will be going blind on speed, rev etc
Yes you can make the stock MR2 cluster work with the 2GR very easily. There is only a resistor swap done to get the tachometer working and everything else works without modification, including speedo. The issue I am running into with the U151 transmission is that there is no speedometer drive ring in the transmission so I have to get a speed input from somewhere else. You can make that work with a stock mr2 electronic cluster, but I’ve been wanting to do a cluster swap anyways so I figured I would bundle both the electronic speedometer conversion and cluster swap into one project.

The easiest way to get a 2GR legal in CA in an SW20 is to drop the whole powertrain from a Camry or Avalon in. Paddle shifters would be neat
@@maxsehic Didn't the Avalon originaly have a ''manual' shifter dealie? I don't expect it to be fast but would be cool to incorporate so you can at least play with the transmission a little bit. Also thumbs up for Madeon while doing wiring

@@1benyko there is a “manual” mode where it lets you bump the shifter up and down yes. I don’t intend on incorporating it initially but I may later down the line.
