Removing poison ivy from a rockwall can be a challenge because sometimes you have to move the rocks, dig under and dig around them, leaving for more of a chance that it will grow back. Admist the rockwall, poison ivy lies in a bed of pine needles which makes the ground softer, the digging does not need to be rigorous. thanks...

Hi Pete, I'd love some tips about trying to remove poison ivy running long lengths on the ground between a row of 6 or 8 Leyland Cyprus trees that cover about a 20 foot run. The ivy roots are dipping down in between all the cyprus tree roots. It's relatively early in the poison ivy plant's growth, so the patches aren't too dense yet, but it runs over about a 20 foot area in length. The roots of the Cyprus trees are large & I am trying to use a trenching shovel & a garden fork to dig between those tree roots, but the ground is hard & even the fine tendrils of the poison ivy roots are diving under the big cyprus tree roots. Normally, I try to catch the poison ivy plants early, before they get any maturity, so I can dig every little bit out before it gets too deep or to entangled with surrounding plant roots. I really hate tearing any portion of the PI roots, knowing they will just send up new shoots again & make me start all over. Do you have any tips for how to get the fine root tendrils of the poison ivy out from beneath the thick roots of an entire row of healthy cyprus trees? ALSO: I'm ashamed to be so overwhelmed when I see what you work with every day, but I'm terrified of this stuff, terrified to track any into the house, terrified to end up with any residual urushiol oil in my washer that will contaminate subsequent loads of clothes (I can only get cold water in my washer). And I am most terrified that I will miss cleaning a spot & then get any of this oil on my tiny little innocent Rodent pet, as she would never allow herself to be given a bath, & she is too tiny & fragile to tolerate rubbing her furry little body firmly.🐭🐁 Also, I can't figure out how to wash up my arms & hands outside, then have to handle my contaminated clothes, especially my shoes, & try to carry it all somewhere to prevent re-touching everything, & STILL, having to re-wash my arms, & now feet, without leaving an entire trail of contamination behind me & into the inside of my house. I'd love to see you do some slow, methodical videos showing each step of how you disrobe the outer layers of clothes & shoes, show exactly where you put them, show how you enter your house without contaminating everything you pass or walk over, how you deal with the washer, without touching knobs or whatever until you hands are clean, etc... I would love to hear & see a full decontamination video with very minute details. I would also appreciate details on how much of your body you are scrubbing once you disrobe (is it only the hands, arms, neck, face, & feet that have to get the FULL TWO-scrub friction-wash treatment, & then the rest of you just gets a gentle soap off & rinse, or are you scrubbing & friction rubbing off the urushiol oil as if it is on every minute part of your body? I'm struggling with this b/c my skin is so sensitive & reactive even to harsh or scented soaps, let alone urushiol. Sorry this is so long, & I appreciate very much seeing how you actually work with removing the PI in the field, but I think many of us desperately need to see the STEP BY STEP DECONTAMINATION PROCESS to learn how to prevent transfer, & to learn what exactly is needed to fully decontaminate our bodies. I'm not asking to invade your privacy or violate your modesty, but I sure would appreciate some detail to help us be safe. Thanks so much. God bless!😇 [6.17.2024] [com1, 28vw; vid dated 6.15.2024]

It looks exhausting just to cut a 5 foot section. I can't imagine removing the entire infestation. The poison ivy is definitely winning. The warming we're experiencing is making it very aggressive. I'm noticing it everywhere now and it's climbing trees and killing them like English ivy. It's probably best to get it out in the spring when it's just roots and small sprouts and a lot cooler. We have a 3 acre infested area in my community that I'm trying to decide how to tackle. They keep mowing it and that just makes it spread. We're going to try smothering it with cardboard. That's what our local conservationist recommends as easiest and most environmentally friendly.

I got this from hey this is my garden article: 'When it comes to stubborn, deep rooted poison ivy plants, attacking them at the soil level seems to have the most success. And one of the best ways to do that is with rock salt. Rock salt is a mineral that forms as salty water dries out. And when placed around the roots of ivy, it will dry it out, killing it in the process.' Also I have a cousin who is in property management and he says he uses rock salt by the wheelbarrow to get rid of their poison ivy, when I asked him what he does when it grows back, he said they add more. You can do it this way, but it will only be the first step. Unless you are religious about loosening ALL the poison ivy (and he clearly is not doing this), when you pull the vines up you'll leave roots behind, and they WILL sprout. For instance, when he shows the main root, you can see a few white spots. Those are where smaller roots have broken off - and they WILL come back. In a few months or early summer next year, you'll have to come back and look carefully for shoots, then dig them up, remove them from the dirt without breaking them.

I’ve been battling a very mature system of poison ivy along the side of my new (1960’s) house. It got me bad this last summer when I used a weed waking , not fully realizing what I was up against. The vines make up hundreds of feet in a 50 sq foot area. I ripped up a bunch of it last week using a shovel and eventually a gloved hand. It got me again, but only bit this little. I need better gloves and plan to tear up more of it.

Hi, thank you for watching! I wear 2 pairs of gloves, first a cotton-polyester mix, about a dollar a pair, then a pair of Atlas 772, big yellow gloves, used in marine care and cow birthing, $16-$18 on amazon. I find a 2.5 pickaxe to be more satisfying than a spade, though the business started with only a spade. Follow up is very important, over the warmer months, any bits of missed roots will grow back within 1-3 months, it's good to get them when they are small. Setting small goals, say an area 5ft by 5ft, 10ft by 10ft, or limiting the time, say 1 or 2 hours, can be helpful for your mental state because large jobs can seem overwhelming, it's good to break them up into smaller bites. Last tip: wash with cold water and dish soap, wash twice that's nice! And use a terry clothe towel to dry, creating a warm friction will ensure less chance of rash. Thanks again!

You can mow over the poison Ivy. If you do that each lawn mowing over the course of a single spring/summer it will just die out. I did that many times growing up on my parent farm who had a big yard. I suppose the roots keep growing, but only having a short stem with only a few leaves overwhelms that ever growing root system which eventually can't be sustained, killing it.

Hi Groovy, I did not dig or loosen the dirt before starting the video, only clipped it off the fence. The pick axe really did most of the hard work. :)

Any idea if this is an effective method for removing English ivy too? I’m in central CT and have a fairly large patch of English ivy along with sections riddled with poison ivy. I’m not sure how to tackle the job outside of paying someone thousands to rip through it with a machine.

Yes, it will work for English ivy or a pick axe. Good luck!

Pesky Pete Barron Thank you for your help! I might also try using a machete to hack through it. A little at a time and hopefully i get through it.

@@bvokey8842 hi! Use a saw or pruners, machete makes high velocity poison ivy, the most dangerous kind, you never know where it will end up. Good luck!

Hi Angel, I bring the poison ivy to a compost/brush pile, where it's left to bake in the sun for 2-3 months, only handled by heavy machinery.

Hi Peter, yes, I am allergic and get the rash about once a month, do my best to have a good clean up routine, washing with Cold water and dish soap, wash twice, that's nice, then use a terri-clothe towel to dry with, using enough force to create friction. When I get the rash I use salt water soaks, 5-10 mins then apply fav pi lotion. Also, I give into the itch at night, keeping the lotion at the bedside, making an effort to use the balls of my fingers with, and rubbing hard with the lotion , allows me to go back to sleep. Not a doctor, this is what I use.

Best video I’ve seen on RUclips about poison ivy removal. Seeing that patch makes me feel better about the patch I have to remove today. I might have to use a garden weasel and a pitchfork though. Good job! I’d feel better if you had safety glasses on…lol 🙏🏻💕

Hi Groovy, thank you for watching! I use warm water, regular detergent and dry the clothes in the same machines the family uses and there has never been an episode of rash due to transfer into/out of the machines. Occasionally, I will find some of my night clothes mixed in with work clothes and though I am highly allergic, have never received a rash after washing/drying. I hope this helps. Funny story, I used to use a tablespoon of dish soap with the clothes until the day there was an overflow of bubbles! 😆
