This video was cool, but it was also pretty vague. For those who still aren't sure what arboriculture is about, here's the quick and dirty on it: Most of arboriculture involves cutting trees, safely bringing the stuff to the ground and removing it from the work site. There are some other aspects to it, but that's really the core of it. It can go from pruning a small fruit tree for fruit production with hand snips, to removing a giant fir with a crane. Most arborists want to climb trees and use loud machines. Often people get really excited about problem-solving and doing technical rigging. Every tree and situation is different and you have to solve the problem in front of you. Overall, it's kind of a way of living childhood fantasies, but getting paid for it. Frankly, it's awesome! Some stuff the video did not mention that it should have is that the job is extremely physical. Dragging stuff to a chipper all day is exhausting, moving logs is essentially weightlifting, climbing is a heck of an upper body and core workout. I've heard arborists described as "industrial athletes" before, and I think it's a good description. Arboriculture is also pretty dangerous. Other industries wear hardhats just in case and because it's policy. Arborists wear hardhats, often with face shields, because they get hit in the head and whacked in the face. Most of the time it's small stuff that would only cause minor injury without a hardhat, but there is a lot of potential for very serious injuries and dying doing this job, from falling out of a tree, to cutting yourself with a chainsaw, to having something dropped on you, to hitting an electrical line and getting fried etc. Almost everything in the industry is dangerous to some degree. Overall, I think it's a fantastic job, but it's not a job for everyone. Hopefully this gives people a better understanding of the industry.

I appreciate your honesty & transparency with what the job really entails. I’m becoming more interested in trees & tree care as I’ve gotten older, & I’m considering pursuing a career involving them. Are you yourself an arborist?
