Join director Alberto Mattea and Master at Arms Alessandro Tosoni as they look back on the fights featured in our medieval short film "FIORE", and how they were based on the historical fighting techniques shown in the Fior di Battaglia manuscript (The Flower of Battle) by medieval fighting master Fiore dei Liberi himself!

"Fiore" is a micro-budget independent short film about medieval Italian fencing master Fiore dei Liberi, one of the fathers of European fencing. The project was made possible by the coming together of a team of passionate reenactors, in the attempt to achieve a more historically accurate depiction of the Middle Ages in film. "Fiore" will premiere here on RUclips on December 16th 2022.

Thank you! The music was composed by our director/young Fiore actor, Alberto Mattea, who professionally is a film composer. You can find a selection of his film music on iTunes and Spotify 🎶

mi permetto una correzione etimologica, anche per chi guarda il video. Nei primi minuti del video viene detto: "dall'oriente, quindi dalle arti marziali". Il punto è proprio che però le arti marziali non sono solo orientali. Già per marziale, ci si riferisce a Marte, dio della guerra.
Buongiorno, una correzione giusta, in parte...il termine marziale è di derivazione latina, legato al dio della guerra, ma il concetto di Arti Marziali no, è un concetto e un termine moderno, non utilizzato in passato, e nasce per racchiudere l'insieme di quelle discipline di combattimento e difesa personale che arrivano dall'oriente (cfr. a questo proposito l'Enciclopedia Treccani). Poi è innegabile che negli ultimi anni, con la riscoperta delle nostre discipline del passato, si sia iniziato a denominare arti marziali occidentali quelle discipline, appunto per distinguerle da quelle orientali.
Ho visto pochi cortometraggi nella mia vita ma sto cercando di recupare ma sento che questa realizzazione è nettamente sopra la media per qualità tecnica ed attoriale dei vari personaggi,i miei più sentiti complimenti!

This is great for fencers and nerds, but I believe Fiore's life story would be a good material for a full scale movie. I mean, way of a young talented swordsman through his training, journeys, quarrels with other masters ... all in captivating middle-ages ... We don't have much movies like that. And much of the story is not known, so there is a place for making it more thrilling for normal moviegoer. You can add some politics, love or whatever.
That would be absolutely fantastic! There is indeed so much potential for a longer format. Unfortunately, the budget for this short film was already extremely limited and we had to stretch it very thin even to make this ten minute short. To pull off a full scale film, a major studio would have to back it, and our accuracy-oriented philosophy goes drastically against the idea that most major film studios unfortunately seem to have of the Middle Ages. Still, we’d love to expand on the idea, and we are already planning more Fiore-related content. Ultimately it will depend on financial support and resources.

This just showed up in my feed this month after studying HEMA by myself in the USA. I was introduced to him through a colleague at work who happens to be from Rome! I have a copy of Fiore's book, I made my own sword out of wood, and I practice every week at a local club. It's also been a huge help in my journey losing 70 pounds. This was really inspiring to me because I not only study swordfighting, but also 3D animation. I would love to make a Fiori style swordfight one day!

We’d love to set a new trend, but making historical films while being able to rely only on volunteers and a handful of generous supporters makes competing against movies like those you mentioned a little hard 😅🎥💰 Still, never say never 💪

It was very good. Well done. I thought the first fight was a bit weak though. Incompetent opponent who fatally didn't have a sense of distance...the swordplay looked a little weak. The tavern fight was very nice though.
