Modern music will always have a tiny audience. One composer described it as a specialty, similar to miniature Chinese painting (inside a vase), or to an artist building statues invisible to the eye, because they are on top of a pinhead (I saw that through a microscope at the Ripley's Believe It or Not museum).

Even straight classical music has a hold on only a tiny percentage of the population. That's why I can't get students. Symphony orchestras are struggling to make ends meet.

Seen from that perspective, it is a profession that serves a select minority. Think of weavers: in the past one could find one. Now they are almost all gone. People throw their clothes away instead of having a true master restore the fabric.

One should feel lucky that anyone is listening. The number of listeners is not going to expand.
