Lovely service and interesting chat with Simon. One correction, I took 3 years off from church whilst at Uni but found faith in my 4th year.
Good Morning all, Many thanks for all that you've done to make this service so wonderful. It's so wonderful that we can still celebrate christ coming into Jerusalem together, even if we're apart. Sending all our love from Norwich. Stay Safe and I'll see you all soon, hopefully.
Day 17, Monday 8th March: Jesus is Lord Read Mark 6:30-56 30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. 35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[e]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?” 38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five-and two fish.” 39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand. Jesus Walks on the Water 45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. 47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened. 53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went-into villages, towns or countryside-they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed. Do these stories leave any doubt about Jesus’ divine nature? When feeding the five thousand, he creates. Taking a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish he multiplies it into enough that fed everyone with abundance left over. He walks on water and calms the night wind, showing that he is Lord over creation. He heals the sick in Gennesaret, demonstrating that he is indeed the Lord of all life. In much of Mark’s gospel Jesus’ nature is hidden. Here, it is fully on display. Prayer Almighty God, through your Son you have Saved me so that I may live in your kingdom. Grant me your grace that I may believe this with my whole heart, always return thanks to you, and steadfastly serve you. Amen.
This was an awesome service. Thankyou to Jim Thomas for your enthusing and challenging message this morning. Thankyou for openng the scriptures to us so clearly.
Day 9, Friday 26th February: Usual Suspects Read Mark 3:7-19 7Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. 8When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. 9Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. 10For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. 11Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” 12But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him. Jesus Appoints the Twelve 13Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15and to have authority to drive out demons. 16These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), 17James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. What are we to make of the 12 disciples? They were a mixed bunch, and even by the standards of the day were not what you might expect from a group of disciples. Jesus obviously had great expectations for them, and Jesus’ command to them to go out preaching and casting our demons would probably daunt any diaconate in the land. But the rest of Mark’s gospel makes it clear that his was a frail bunch. They felt great fear, tensions and insecurity. They failed as often as they succeeded. When I read about the failures of the Disciples, it actually cheers me up. If Jesus only called and used the best of the best, I would not be a minister, and probably you would not be a follower of Jesus. If he could only use the useful, then none of us could be used. It’s a good job, isn’t it, that Jesus gives big missions to inadequate people, then gives them the Holy Spirit to help them do the things he called them to. Prayer Holy Spirit, lead me and all others who bear the name of Christ to faithfully bear witness to the truth of His life-giving cross. And even though I am inadequate help me to expect great things from Christ and attempt great things for Christ. Amen.
Thanks everyone
Amen
Read Joel 2:12-14 "Yet even now," declares the Lord, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments." Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster. Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord your God? So It is Ash Wednesday. The journey through Lent begins. I love Lent In repentance and faith, we travel with Jesus to the cross, pondering the amazing gifts that he gives to us in his life, suffering, death, burial, and resurrection. We remember and reflect. For generations, many Christians have chosen to “give something up” for Lent. Beginning with fasting, many people today choose to give up some particular thing, intending that this discipline helps them reflect on all that Christ did for them. If you choose to do this, God bless you in your Lenten walk. Others use Lent for a special time of giving; and in our church this Lent we are encouraging people to think about the water they use and to make a gift in gratitude for it. Still other people take something up for Lent. Find a new area of service, expand a spiritual discipline, spend more time in Scripture and prayer. This, too, can focus our attention. This Lent I would invite you to join me in reading through the Gospel of Mark. Each weekday and Saturday there will be a portion of Mark’s Gospel to read, along with a short devotional reflection. I hope this will be a blessing to you this Lent. Lord, we are beginning our journey through Lent this morning. As we walk through the Gospel of Mark we pray that you will walk with us and by your Spirit You will minister to us, you will help us and your will guide us and deepen our relationship with you. Amen.
He's got the whole world in his hands. Amen
