'62 Fender brown face Pro Amp in for a refresh
I love working on these vintage guitar amps. This early 60s amp was dropped off for me to go through and make ready for some studio time. Super cool amp with the limited harmonic tremolo. Stick around for the end if you just want to hear how it sounds. My video editing sucks so apologies for that, but hope you enjoy.

Single channel 20w Dumble style amp sample

Sound sample with a slow blues jam through my newest build. This is a stripped down single channel 20W Dstyle amp with tube reverb. I have been messing with different iterations of the Dumble circuits and finally came up with one that I really like. This is played through a custom 1x12 with a Warehouse ET-65 speaker, single SM57 straight into Protools, no EQ, no effects. I built this for Austin...

    I've heard enough negative things about Silver Mica caps that I'm no longer using them. Kemet has a multi-layer ceramic in axial form that I'll be using to rebuild my Ampeg Jet J-12-B. I'm changing the tone circuit to Framus midrange and have tapered bass with smaller value couplers. If treble is excessive I'll install the Vox tone cut mod that goes before the grid resistors to the 6V6 tubes. My Vox AC15c1 sounds best with the tone cut just beyond 3pm, so I may dial in the ideal treble reduction, measure the resistance, and solder in that value. The cap Vox uses is 4700pf, but I think that dips pretty low into midrange. I'll try 250pf, 500pf, etc ... Thanks for this video! I'd like to see the schematic. You prefer 6V6 over 5881?

    There is a fuse of sorts in the circuit. It’s a CSA overheat protection device. It’s inside the transformer bell cover. The heaters wires aren’t twisted pair. They are grounded on one leg instead of a center tap or two 100Ω resister false CT. I just acquired one of these two days ago and I’m still figuring out all I need to do. I may bypass the overheat protection and install a 2A fuse. I’m also going to put a speaker jack. I have cabinets I can play around with.

    The “low spark” is the description of the rush brought on by injecting the speedball (high-heeled boy). The man in the suit making profits on the dreams of his customers is the dealer. Shot dead by the gun that didn't make any noise. But it wasn't a bullet that laid him to rest. At the time this song was written, street slang for heroin was “boy”' and cocaine was “girl”. A “high-heeled boy” referred to a mixture of heroin and coke, called a speedball. Mixing these two opposite drugs is said to counteract their negative effects, leaving the best of each

    Wow…..this is interesting. The DS40 is PTP on a turret board, but the BE line isn’t? I know the SLO is a PCB board. When I look into an amp this expensive, this is what i expect to see…not some paint by numbers PCB. Very cool of you to share this. I wonder if the later models of DS, and the Twin Sister are made like this??? Or, maybe it’s amps outside the Friedman line at BAD that are on PCB’s. This has me wondering now. That said, I would dearly LOVE to know how to start working on these, and building my own two channel Little Sister but with 6V6’s. The engineering, and creativity is absolutely fascinating to me. It’s finding a starting point that has me stumped. Headfirst has some really cool things going on with his PCB’s, I’m thinking about trying.

      Someone can correct me BUT: Pre-BAD DS40 is handwired turret board, SB might be the same. Both are PCB after BAD, but the PCB's are very sturdy and look great. The V1 minis are handwired. TS is PCB. You can look up some gut shot threads on thegearpage too.

    • @phillamoore157
      @phillamoore157 Год назад

      @@mikedfurman That’s interesting as well. I’m sure the reason for that is, because Dave’s got minions working for him who are proficient at soldering, but not necessarily amp building. When I saw the SLO PCB, I about swallowed my balls. Although, the PCB on the SLO with the purple wiring did look cool, I have to admit. It’s not a sound, or even “robust” issue. It’s what I’m paying for. When I open an amp at these obscene prices, and don’t see meticulous, well-organized wiring, it’s a turn-off. If it’s going to be on a PCB, even with high-end parts, it might as well be soldered by a robot in China, as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps that’s unfair, given a military spec PCB, is most certainly more robots and durable. You’re not the only person to have that opinion, so it’s probably just me. But, at $4+K, when I pop the hood and see a PCB it’s a turn-off. Especially, when companies like Ceriatone are still doing turret boards. At least when I got my Yeti 50 it was. Anyway…. Very cool info. Thanks for the reply.

      @madjack4691 Год назад

      Pcb or turret board, it's the same. You pay big money for good amp, well made. Turret board or not, that don't give a better sound. Sorry my 2 cents.

    • @phillamoore157
      @phillamoore157 Год назад

      @@madjack4691 ….all the power to you. For the money these guys are asking, I just assume sweat the little things. It’s not a sound thing, it’s a principle thing. It’s been long since proven that a PCB sounds just as good. But, $4+K (for the head alone) is a LOT of money for what amounts to $500-$700 in parts (if not less). The SLO now is PCB, but back when Mike was making them in Seattle, short of the electronics a lot of which he had custom made, he made the entire chassis, with fabrication equipment in his car shop. You truly felt like you were getting his blood, sweat, and tears (so-to-speak). And, ironically, the amp was cheaper when he was making them. But, I digress….obviously, there are a lot of people that don’t mind. All the power to them. Not sure if it’s hand-wired, P2P turret, or not, I have yet to “pop the hood”…but, I do love it. 👍

      @@phillamoore157 the SLO has always used a pcb. Sure, it was updated when bad started making them but most seem to agree it is very much for the better. I had one that was originally purchased in 1989 for either 1300 or 1500(my memory is fuzzy on that) which translates to around $3500-4000 in todays money…I’d personally rather have a new one with modern construction and reliability. Marshall has used pcb’s since 1973. I have built and modded amps for a long time and I despise the “handwired” nonsense. Point to point in high gain is always more noisy no matter how much of an “expert” the builder is, turret boards are great for modding but not better than pcb in any other way. For whatever reason some people also seem to think pcb mounted pots cheapen amps but anyone with any actual experience would know how much more reliable they are. If you think you are getting a better value by imagining your amp was wired by some highly skilled artisan who puts his soul into each heater wire twist and can adjust his soldering iron temperature by smell…I guess go for it. I’m not going to go too far into detail but the assumption that the cost is too high because the parts cost is “low” comparatively is failing to account for all the other overhead related to doing business. The profit per amp is not huge.

    Hey Craig, thanks. I don’t “hate” the silver mica caps branded as just “SM.” I’ve just seen way too many fail prematurely. I’m not the only tech who has. The CDM branded caps cost more but are less prone to issues if you want to use a silver mica cap.
