paul an ageing Hippy
Добавлен 18 окт 2024
I am a retired ageing hippy and got hooked on music reaction videos were younger generations listen to music from my era and react, Well I cant react to music I have already heard so thought I would review my life through the musical soundtrack of my life. On my channel I will pick a year not chronologically and returning to same years more than once. I will pick a popular song from that year or one I liked and explain what I was doing at the time, what was happening in the world and what that piece of music meant to me. I will encourage older generations to contribute through the comments and also ask younger generations to let me know how they feel about our music and world events of the time.
G L I Believe In Father Christmas
1975 Greg Lake : I Believe in Father Christmas
Lake a former band member of King Crimson and Emmerson, Lake and Palmer Released this song that I Struggled to place at #2 instead of #. My love of Progressive Rock obviously influenced my favouritism of this track. Was kept from the top spot in the UK Charts by the one and only Bohemian Rhapsody from Queen.

Fairytale of New York

1987 The Pogues with Kirsty MacColl : Fairytale of New York The song is an Irish folk style ballad written as a duet. Shane MacGowan taking the male part and Kirsty MacColl singing the female part. It has led a troubled past with radio stations because of the words “Old Slut on Junk Faggot and arse”. Despite this it has become the most played song at Christmas in the 21st century and has reache...

1980 Jona Lewie : Stop the Cavalry Written and performed by Jona Lewie Stop the Cavalry is an anti-war and a Christmas song. Kept of the #1 spot only by two re=issues by John Lennon in the year of his death it peaked at #3. Was not written as a Christmas song but once the record company heard the line “I wish I could be home for Christmas” they used it as a clever marketing ploy at Christmas.
Eric Clapton I Shot the Sheriff

Eric Clapton : I Shot the Sherif A Bob Marley song Eric took it and gave it a reggae rhythm and blues twist. Marley’s version was pure commercial reggae and Eric’s fusion gave it a progressive take and a fresh feel. Erics story is a long one and therefore will take many visits to his music to tell in full. His first really big break came in 1963 when he joined The Yardbirds and stayed with them...

Lesley Gore : You Don’t Own Me. Lesley was still at school when she was picked up by Quincey Jones after he heard some demos she had made. This pairing actually made Gore the biggest selling female vocalist of the sixties. Her first recording was It’s My Party and I’ll Cry if I Want To. Elbow One Day Like This T in the park 2012 Elbow a band seen as Rock, Indie or Electronic pop , I would include Modern Progressive to the list of genre. Elbow use the extensive use of strings to produce maybe one of the greatest progressive rock anthems of all time with One Day Like this.

Faith Healer was off their 1973 album Next and was a Progressive Rock Blues track with a constant melodic riff throughout. Mama Cass Elliot Dream a Little Dream of Me
As I have stated earlier, this is by far my favourite. The instrumentation and lyrics are brilliant. It is perhaps all the better, for the one thing it lacks namely a big sing-along chorus, so these days it suffers compared to the schmaltzy crap that dominates our xmas listening whether we like it or not.
Big hug from Brazil!! A suggestion... Marc Martel "Who Wants to Live Forever"
@@lemaciel25 big hug back at you great to here I have followers in Brazil ✌️❤️
Thanks for that Paul, much appreciated by this superannuated hippie!
I confess, I had forgotten about this one..... so thanks for reminding me! My personal favourite would be "I believe In Father Christmas" by Greg Lake, but I'm also rather fond of "Happy Xmas (war is over)" and "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day" and "The Fairytale of New York"
@@m0rafic1 both are in my top five and hopefully will get an airing over next three days ✌️❤️
Thanks for playing this, might I suggest Frijid Pink's version of "House of The Rising Sun" which got to No 4 in the UK charts in 1970.... Very different from the classic version by The Animals, but with the added attraction of fuzz.... I suppose that Scott McKenzie should be paired up with The Flowerpot Men song "Let's Go To San Francisco"?
@@m0rafic1 I also like the flowe pot men’s song You are also right Frijid Pink did a Great version. Thanks for commenting on my fledgling channel ✌️❤️
She was one of a kind. I often thought she had poor management that she wasn't more popular. Although Brand New Key was a mega hit, it gave her a bubblegum image and her deeper, insightful work was overlooked as a result. Her later albums, Stoneground Words and Photograph, demonstrated her growth as an artist and a powerful vocal range. My favorites are Lay Down and Cyclone. As far as covers go, her rendition of Jim Croce's Lover's Cross is gorgeous
Original is the best. Mick Jagger's background vocals steal the show.
@@willelrics9027 I agree and I must admit (blame my age) I had forgotten about Mick’s vocals. He just happened to be in the studio at the time. ✌️❤️
The studio version of this song is the greatest song ever recorded! Love Deep Purple! Mach II, Mach III and Mach IV.
Nice track 👍🏽 nice to check out music I wouldn’t hear ! ..sounds of my youth though 🙏🏽
@@davidpowell4005 in my humble opinion the best sax solo ever. ✌️❤️
Love the track .. thanks for the education..well presented 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
@@davidpowell4005 thanks for your comment and support glad you enjoyed. ✌️❤️
It never did much in the UK. It was a US number one, an anthem, and won her a Grammy.
I did say it was not successful over here ✌️❤️
@@paul-g6j7h No, I know. Minus "Angie Baby," she never had success in the UK! It just seemed rather dismissive of a song that really did become iconic in much of the world.
Not that Ritchie Blackmore didn't play some iconic guitar riffs, but I am always stunned by how up front Jon Lord's keyboards are in the mix.Of course Ian's vocals are incredible. What a great band!
@@ALAN_COX I believe they were all outstanding musicians but you are right Jon Lords playing was unbelievable. Most people would think if you can play a piano then the organ is easy. Wrong they are not comparable the force to push the keys down is so harder and that is just the start. Great player love watching his hand during his keyboard solos. ✌️❤️
Even though the opening is nicked from It's A Beautiful Day's "Bombay Calling" this is still fantastic, moving and Deep Purple's finest achievement. For the little my opinion is worth.
@@m0rafic1 your opinion is worth more than you think. It is always good to discuss. Thank you for your support and comment. ✌️❤️
From another superannuated hippie, thanks for playing one of my favourite tracks! :- Mike
The whole album is brilliant ✌️❤️
I agree, it was before its time
Thank you for this. I first saw the Woodstock film in 1981 on a rented video when I was 17. Santana, Richie Havens and The Who were amazing but Joe Cocker's stunning rendition of With A Little Help was life altering for me.
@@drj8498 thanks for your comment keep watching Joe Cocker is on the future playlist. ✌️❤️
So I have to comment this... the cocaine nonsense about Bobbys death does not need to be brought up. The man was one of the best singers ever. The miniscule amount found in his system when he died is suspect. His family, friends and Bill were all shocked with the findings. No one saw him take anything, or saw him under the influence, and nothing was found in his room. The whole thing is suspect. Bobby had 95% blockage.
@@spoodlew I do appreciate your view and I agree with the one of the best singers comment. The autopsy however did report an amount of cocaine in his system so I was just reporting and warning on facts. I hope this did not ruin the experience for you. Paul ✌️❤️
Thank you for your honesty.
@@jkirtleyheacting thank you it would be a little dishonest to skip parts of your life in a life review. Although hard to make I felt it had to be said. If you check out my Come on Eileen video I actually go through all the trauma of the previous year. Thanks for your support. Paul ✌️❤️
