Добавлен 30 май 2011
Two keen sailors and a springer spaniel who live in Tarbert, Loch Fyne, on the west coast of Scotland. We run a local business, but in our free time we sail our 50 year old classic yacht, a Nicholson 35 built in 1972, around the Clyde and Hebrides. Our aim with this channel is to share the sailing, anchorages, walks, scenery and wildlife that we experience. So please subscribe and join us as we explore the stunning coast that we are lucky enough to call home.

Thank you for sharing delightful videos, quite a corner of paradise 👍
A walk?
yes, its a great walk and one we do pretty often. Usually in stages, although we do cycle the length of the canal every now and then.
Looks great fun ,
Thanks, yes it was - one of our favourite anchorages
You could always pick up one of their two mooring balls.
Good point. We should have mentioned that as an option. Some of the visitor moorings around here aren't that well maintained, so we tend to prefer our anchor if possible.
Definitely one of the best restaurants in the area… delicious local produces, often from foraging 👍 and beautiful hikes.
Yes we loved it, really nice but quite expensive, so its not going to suit everyone. Very different to the "chicken and chips in a basket" that Inver Cottage used to serve many moons ago!
beautiful spot, I had been thinking of sailing up to Inver, so very useful. thanks 👍
Glad you found it helpful - trying to strike a balance between informative and entertaining is the name of the game for us!
Great video of sailing west coast - fab
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it!
We stumbled upon your video collection by sheer accident and thought that looks like the lady in a shop we regularly visit - Mark & Helen from Clachan.
Fame at last! :) Glad you found us.
Yes we love the slow contemplative mood of the videos of some of the places we've been to. Keep it up
We have quite a few from this season that will be posted over the winter. It is all a matter of time unfortunately.
Hi, Did you take a video of Argonaut of Rhu going through the Crinan Canal a few years ago. We were at Ardrossan over 2023 after coming back from Norway, wish we could have met. Ralph
Hi Ralph, yes that was us. We had a short chat as you were going through one of the locks. Hope you are all well.
Sail number 8 is Moonbeam IV not Mariquita. Mariquita has C1 on sail.
You are quite right - don't know how I missed the incorrect label for Moonbeam IV! At least I got Mariquita correct at the end of the short.
@@tarbertsailing 😀👍🙏
Lovely video and informative too, Thank you
Thank you - glad that you enjoyed it.
Always dry throat when your boat is swinging like that 👍
Yep - not allowed to ride in the boat anymore! Health and safety, although I was never that keen anyway.
Just found your channel 👍👍 subscribed love your dog , like your commentary with minimal facial shots, and camera pointing some where interesting, well done keep it up👍
Glad you have found us. We have no desire to be film stars - just sharing the wonderful sailing grounds that we are fortunate enough to call home. Thanks for the feedback.
Great video! Looking forward to visiting there next may!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Will you be sailing next May?
Hello. Great to bump into you in Plockton a few weeks ago. Keep the videos coming really enjoy them. I moved Minke from Portavadie to Ardfern this year so we could be further west. So far we have been the furthest west on Minke (Canna) and furthest north (Rona) this year. The weather has made us give up for now and we are back home in N wakes. Hope to be back up soon when and if the weather turns. How as your trip north and did you have the same issue e had ITN beating into al the southerly winds to get south? Take care. Fair winds. Sue, Andrew and Cocker Islay.
Great to meet you too! Thanks for the feedback on the videos. We are playing catchup with them after our sailing so far this season. The weather has been quite poor, but we are hoping to get away again soon. And yes, we were beating across to the Uists in northerly winds and then back again when they switched south. Ardfern is a great base for west coast sailing. Will you over-winter there?
@@tarbertsailing Yes we have a 6 month mooring for the summer and 6 months in the Marian over winter.
@@andrewprice702 A good plan. We will be coming back to Tarbert in a few weeks time, as the weather becomes more unsettled. Hopefully a couple more sails to get in before that.
What a gem of a yt channel😊. Always enjoyed our time across the west coast of Scotland from Bute to Arisaig and always had a soft spot for an over enthusiastic spaniel 😁. Great stuff . From one of your subscribers 👍🏼🙏
Thank you - so glad that you found us! Welcome aboard. And yes, Pip is an overenthusiastic spaniel :)
Sailed to Sanda often. The pilot guide was grossly pessimistic. It is very sheltered from the tide and weather, except from the North. It is easy to cross the tidal current even if the tide is strong, and once in the anchorage you can relax and enjoy its security. The pub had so few customers the beer was often ‘off’!
Yes, a very sheltered anchorage - and now that the moorings have gone, easy anchoring. Looks like the buildings have been done up recently, and now B&B type accommodation, but I guess that the water supply is the biggest issue. Anyway, back on the market again for £2.5m. I struggle to understand how it could ever be a viable business for anyone given its remoteness, but good on those who wish to give it a try.
Your Nic 35 looks well maintained and seems to sail great.
Thank you - yes she is a great sailing boat, although does need a little bit of breeze to get her going. That said, she handles the rough stuff very well.
Nice to see. Its a few years since we have sailed into St Ninian's or seen the red buoy at Ardlamont where my parents are in permanent residence. Maybe visit before the end of the season.
It's a lovely spot. The red can at Ardlamont has been replaced by a cardinal this year, in case you are wondering where it has gone.
Beautiful journey. Thanks for sharing!
And thank you for your feedback - so glad that you enjoyed it!
beautiful anchorage, will have to try that sometime. 😊
Well worth a visit when there is some north in the wind, but you'll need to wait for this weather to settle a bit! Wild on Loch Fyne today!
Do you only charge your service batteries by alternator? No shore power or solar?
We have all 3 - a 30 amp shore power charger, a small 50W solar panel (which really needs an update) and the B2B charger for the alternator. All Victron. I didn't show it all in the video - perhaps I should have.
Great video thanks! My dad’s family own a house in torinturk, used to go for walks in the forest as a kid. A few years ago my brother and I went back and had a walk in the forest, surprised to see it had been opened up and found the giants grave. Would love to go back and visit the dun. After reading into this and hearing of the clan leaders wolf dog it sparked a memory. The old lady next door to us used to mention having seen a large black “cat” like animal similar to a panther in the forest 🤷🏻♂️ this was back in 80’s or something
Thanks for the feedback, and glad you enjoyed it. Love stories like yours, which all add to the history of the place. I believe that there were reports of a big black cat around Kintyre some years ago, so not surprised to hear your account.
Thank you for taking us with you on your journey!
You are very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
@@tarbertsailing Hope it is a bit warmer on your next one!
Great video of sailing! Only ever sailed once - on the Merlin of Clyde yacht. Would love to do it all again! 😀
Thanks for the feedback - I haven't seen Merlin of Clyde for a while. Did you work for Rolls Royce by chance?
@@tarbertsailing No. 😀 Many years ago, my best friend's wife won a free raffle draw which gave about 6 couples (I think) a day's sailing up the Kyles of Bute. She couldn't go, so my friend took me. Still got the nice R.R. photo sheet from the day.
Exalant video
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it.
Loving all your trips and the information that you have on where you visit. Looking forward to more.
Thanks. Yes, more to come. We have just been busy sailing :)
Looks like orienteering punches those clicky things. Thank you enjoyed your video
That is what we guessed - there seemed to be quite a lot of them. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I lived there from 1974 to 1977 when my husband was a lighthouse keeper there. Our daughter was 6 weeks old when we arrived there.
That would have been pretty hard I imagine. Wild on a bad day, and the road is difficult in the winter too. And a baby too - you must be made of tough stuff!
This might be a dumb question but are you allowed to go onto private property like that? In the US it’s trespassing unless there is an easement just curious how it works in Europe.
Not a dumb question at all - in Scotland there exists a right to roam. You cannot start wandering through private gardens, but open land is just that - open. You do have to adhere to the outdoor access code, which means dogs under control, close gates and so on - in other words responsible access and not total freedom to do as you like.
@@tarbertsailing ***Private Land: The right to roam does not imply a right to enter private land without permission, and landowners may restrict access if they wish.*** Scotland’s right to roam law, enshrined in the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, grants everyone in Scotland the right to access ""most"" land (not all) and inland water for recreational purposes, ***subject to certain limitations and responsibilities.*** Key Provisions: Right of Responsible Access: Everyone has the right to be on land for recreational purposes and to cross land for those purposes, as long ***as they exercise this right responsibly.*** Limitations: ***The right to roam does not extend to land adjacent to dwelling houses, farm buildings, compounds, schools, and other similar features.*** Responsibilities: Access must be exercised ***responsibly***, in accordance with the Scottish Outdoors Access Code, which provides "guidance" ( not law) on responsible behavior, including respecting private property, wildlife, and the environment.
Thanks for the details. As I said, responsible access to open land, which describes the majority of Sanda except directly around the buildings and the jetty. So landing on the beach is fine, as is walking over the island to the lighthouse.
What a beautiful area. I love Argyll and your videos are showing places I know and love. I like going along to Cairnbaan.
Glad you enjoyed the video. This is one of our favourite walks, from the Dunardry locks towards Crinan.
Stunning. I stayed one night in summer and it was glorious.
Glad you enjoyed the video. We count ourselves very lucky as its a regular dog walk for us.
wonderful video thank you 🙂
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it!
some nice sunset shots 👍
Thank you - its a great spot for sunsets.
Thanks for doing this video. I was lucky enough to stay at the Mull of Kintyre when my brother in law was a lighthouse keeper. Brilliant memories.
Thanks, and glad you enjoyed it!

I’ve discovered Sanda through the recent listing! Beautiful video of the island! Liked and subscribed
Glad you enjoyed the video, and welcome aboard!
This is the landscape and the weather that I love so much, and then after a long walk a glass of peated whiskey by an open fire to optimize the salty taste and air in your mouth !!! 💯👍🏻💯👍🏻💯👍🏻💯👍🏻💯👍🏻
You have summed it all up perfectly! Glad the video was able to help you conjure that feeling.
Just discovered your channel and love it - getting better all the time!😀
Yes it has been a bit of a journey, learning about recording and editing videos. Really pleased to hear that you think they are getting better - Thank you.
Fantastic video, would love to visit Sanda island myself, love the sunset there👍
Thank you. It's a lovely place - very peaceful, but such an exposed location. $3m and it's yours apparently!
Yeah its definitely worth more than $3 million, I've been to Arran, Skye, Rothesay and Millport this year and gonna do Isle of Mull next but maybe sometime soon would like to try visit the Isle of Sanda, looks so peaceful there👍
Cheers from Tallahassee, Florida, USA. I have visited the islands only as a tourist. I hope to return someday.
The draw of the west coast of Scotland is strong! I'm sure you will be back soon.
Ai, the odd plants you showed are very dangerous and from amerika. It is a hard plant to remove and very toxic 8:26
We think it is called thorn apple, so that matches with what you mention - from the USA and poisonous. Anyway, we didn't handle them fortunately!
@@tarbertsailing i liked the video by the way!
Thank you - very kind
Thanks for sharing your experience. How much did it cost to moor?
Glad you enjoyed it Steve. We drove/walked here, and our boat is based in Tarbert (about 1 hour drive away). I wouldn't advise mooring at the mull in any conditions to be honest.
Lovey video. Lovely place. Island now on sale for USD $3.1 million. A steal if you ask me.
Thanks, and glad you enjoyed the video. Yes it is a lovely place on a nice day. Water is the problem on the island - no fresh supply and no lochs that I am aware of. The cottages are nice though, but awful bleak on a wet and windy day. Are you in the market for an island then?
@@tarbertsailing I'm afraid Island-buying is not a financial possibility in the near future. But I'm a Scot by blood and would love to travel back one day. I feel the homeland pull.
When Inchmarnock was up for sale, we said that (subject to a lottery win) we would buy it and turn it into a wildlife sanctuary! Anyway, we are still waiting for the lottery win :)
Very cool! I was at Ballycastle in Co. Antrim the other day looking over at the Mull of Kintyre, was very clear and could easily see the lighthouse from Torr Head
We have had some really clear days recently, so not surprised that you got a good view of the lighthouse. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Delightful
thank you - glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for this beautiful video. Wondering if there are also Orca's in these regions? We were in 2010 on the island Aran, doing a motorcycling / camping trip. Best regards from the Netherlands 🙂
There are very occasionally Orca in the Clyde, and more frequently seen around the Outer Hebrides. Not the rudder eating variety though :)
