What's up with the Bible?
"Just read your Bible!" The person exclaims during a discussion. But their assumption is the lens through which they've been taught to read the Bible is the way someone just picking up the Bible will read it. When someone picks up the Bible, they engage with ancient writings originally written in another language, in another culture, in another land long ago. This is not a book that someone can simply pick up and receive "Holy Ghost downloads" and understand what the writers are saying. Michael, Jim, and Loren take a look at this rich and challenging book.

Stop Separating the Trinity!
Просмотров 39Месяц назад
The doctrine of the Trinity is a beautiful way of describing the unity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in one Godhead. Sadly, some sects of Christianity have divided God into three separate persons, each with a distinct personality, in order to justify and embrace Janus-faced violent God images and teachings that contradict the Father as revealed in the Son. Michael, Jim, and Loren discuss ...
Anti-Intellectualism
Просмотров 629Месяц назад
There are large portions of Christianity that cling to the importance of the Bible and elevate the teaching of scripture while at the same denouncing any in-depth study of it. They're locked into their hermeneutics and interpretation of the Bible regardless of what evidence points to the contrary. Intellectuals who learn the original languages and study the culture, history, and sciences to und...
The Journeys of Two Charismatics
Просмотров 642 месяца назад
Anti-intellectualism is dominating much of Christianity. Sadly, it is widespread in charismatic/Pentecostal circles. But that's not to say that these believers don't have something valuable to contribute to the body of Christ. As charismatics (but without the crazy, as Dr. Stephen Crosby puts it), Jim and Loren share their journeys from anti-intellectualism to embracing the scholarly work of te...
History & the Bible
Просмотров 633 месяца назад
What were you taught about history as it relates to the Bible? Many believers have misconceptions about the history surrounding the Bible times and the church. Jim wasn't able to join in on this one so Michael and Loren dared to continue in his absence and discussed the Bible through a historical lens.
Love Your Enemies
Просмотров 634 месяца назад
Jesus taught us to love our enemies. This is not some side teaching, but the heartbeat of what it means to follow Jesus. Here in the US, we tend to think of loving our enemies as loving that person who rubs me the wrong way. But that's only scratching the surface. It also means loving my political opponents, the enemies of my country, and the people groups I despise. In this episode, Michael, J...
Free-will & Determinism Part 2

Last podcast we began a fascinating debate between Mark Karris and Thomas Jay Oord on free-will or determinism. This week things really get interesting as our guests examine how these play into desire and our relationship with God.

Marcion

When people begin questioning the contradictions they see between Jesus and the God in some of the Old Testament passages they are often accused of Marcionism. But who was Marcion and what did he teach that caused him to be labeled a heretic?
Christian Terminology

In this episode, which was recorded on 4/20 (an important piece of information), Jim, Michael, and Loren discuss commonly used Christian terms that are misdefined and misapplied.
Romans 14 - Causing people to stumble
Просмотров 487 месяцев назад
In Romans 14 Paul discusses the weak eating vegetables while the strong are eating meat. This passage is often interpreted as saying, "Don't do things in front of others that will cause them to stumble." Jim, Michael, and Loren take a look at this passage and as we'll see, we've been looking at this through a 21st-century lens.
1 Corinthians 5: Kicking the man out of church
Просмотров 587 месяцев назад
1 Corinthians 5, the passage dealing with kicking a man out of church because of incest, is a difficult passage. Many churches use this passage as justification to kick people out involved in certain sins. Is that what Paul is instructing the Corinthians to do? On the surface, it appears that's the case. But as Michael, Jim, and Loren discuss, Paul may not be saying what we thought he was saying.
Morality & Ethics
Просмотров 638 месяцев назад
At a recent gathering, Michael made an interesting statement, "God doesn't do morality, he does Ethics." What does that mean? Many people think of morality and ethics as being the same thing. Others talk about not being under the Law while still upholding moral codes. What is the difference between doing morality and doing ethics?
Morality

Is following Jesus about adhering to morals, rules, and codes of conduct?
The Satan

Why are Christians Leaving Christianity?
Great discussion guys! I personally don't believe in the bible as divine at all but this was a great listen. Keep up the good work!
How about this revelation? "I don't feckin know! I *trust*!". Works for me . . .
Pistis-Trust- . . . Oh f-f-f-f! Defies "logic"! Holy Canoley!
Ah Jim! You've touched the conodrum! *Certainty*! Or, as Pete Enns published: The Sin of Certainty. You've taken the Red Pill. Welcome to the rabbit hole . . .
All joking aside, you gotta admit that Papa God is okay with messes . . . Can ya dig?
Oh Michael! Using A$$-hle in reference to deity! Tsk-tsk-tsk!😆
Not all your listeners, Jim. There's a few of us heretics that listen . . .😎
I was trying to find Jim Durkin website. I found an old one only. Thanks! Bookmarked the videos. 😊
🙂👍🏽
The trinity is figurative and was meant to be figurative. If you understand hebrew thought its clear what they meant. You judge who someone is by their actions and words. If jesus words and actions are exactly what God would do, then theyre the same in that sense. Not that jesus is literally God and has all of his characteristics.
37 translations?!? Jeezus, I'm fallin' short! Oh wait. I do have the Authorized Hardin Translation! Just caught the boat in time! 😈😆😎
😂
Wait, wait! There's "chutes and ladders" levels??? Oh man, I've been missing out! 😂
Jim, bro, I'm right there with you! I've had the same flow of questions/thoughts. Maybe I need to adjust my meds . . .
"Bashing the Charismatics"; Oh please, thank you sir! May I have another?!? 😆😬😈😎
You forgot the H2O analogy . . . which is where I'm *sort of at*; the composition of water is H2O. In a solid form we call it ice. But it's still H2O. At room temp it's liquid but STILL H2O. Boiled, it becomes gaseous but it's still H2O . . . But then there is the concept of "Perichorisis" , which is a whole other discussion.
No Michael , you'll come back as Bozo . . .😆😎
It’s defines religion and now it extends to our political systems in which higher education is denounced as a bad thing. I can’t imagine how that could be countered productive in a 21 century economy.
Nice podcast. Anti-intellectualism is a problem in many religions. Glad you are presenting an alternate voice. I am trying something similar on my own channel, though in a very different way. I think religious people need to take back the narrative and assert that you can believe in God and still live in a modern world and acknowledge we live in a time where knowledge floods the earth and that is a good thing, even if it means we need to realize some of what we thought we knew needs to adjust.
Thanks! And good points!
I find it serendipitous that we all had encountered Wayne Jacobsen's work at the beginning of our deconstruction.
Excellent!
Dysfunctional? We put the "fun" in dysfunctional! FUNdementalism, Dispensationalism, & Complimentarialism! "Reformed Theology" killed the Jesus Movement. "We're not a denomination. We're a "movement""! Ya wanna hear horror stories? Brothers, I got a boat load!
Without the "Crazy"?!? Oh c'mon man, I OWN the crazy! Got the coffee mug, the t-shirt and video tape (which I traded in for the DVD). Who wants normal? 😆😝😎

Thank you Loren, Jim, and Michael for doing these podcasts. I am very appreciative of your hard work and love you all have for others.
Thank you!
You're welcome Loren! 😊
Gods love is all encompassing however because of this his love is non controlling because true love is non controlling and allows us to make our own choices. And because we are all connected the poor choice made by others can have long term effects on others that we may not be able to connect. This is why you can’t go by circumstances because you may not be able to see what led to what has happened. It’s also important to understand that this life is not all there is and is just a grain of sand in the enormity of eternity. To quote Nadia Boltz Webber. “ one day we will look back on our lives and it will feel like one bad night in a cheep hotel.
Thanks for the great podcasts guys! A couple podcasts suggestions, along the lines of: Prayer what is it and how does it work? And The Holy Spirit what is it how does work?
💜 talking about practicing gratitude is always a good reminder, and I’m thankful for this episode of this podcast
❤ Thanks again for sharing these conversations

A very ***moving*** episode.😆😎
Born in 1984, right on the gen-x millenial border. I grew up in a secular family and became Christian after graduating high school. My best friend grew up Christian and left as a teen. His reason for no longer believing was simple: hypocrisy. Constantly being judged as a kid by those who preached "judge not" when the pastor's or adults did bad. As someone who grew up secular and came to Jesus later, it's the same. Tried a couple churches, but it never felt right. I saw help to the poor and needy coming from humanitarian organizations, not these pastors I was seeing on the TV. All I saw was unnecessary extravagance. Also, the younger generation is growing up in an era where the internet makes it easy to see all the talk of being in the end times. The younger generation have their whole lives ahead of them. Who wants to believe that the end times are now and they won't be able to live a life? @27:30 sparked an interesting question in me. Can you be a light of Jesus and the Father unto the world while only professing to represent them when someone asks where/who your light is from?
🙂👍🏽
😎 It’s a real pleasure to listen to y’all converse 🙏🏽 ¡gracias
👋🏽 🙂 ❤
It’s ok to build up my ministry. If you do I will add you to my overcomer’s mailing list where I teach the latest prophetic downloads on how you can discover the kingdom portals which will take you to your next level, and release the kingdom authority and power that will help you become the best you that you can be. 😂 Well, I think Michael is past his “best used before” date, so my downloads might not work for him, but the other two of you can join. 😂😂😂😂😂
😄 😄 😄 👍🏽 👍🏽
"...why they think this is happening" is the key here. They don't KNOW. They haven't researched this and talked to, you know, actual heathen. If Christians want to actually KNOW why people leave, invite the people WHO HAVE LEFT on your podcast. We'll tell you. We're not in some secret society where we're bound to silence. The truth is you don't WANT to know. You want to get patted on the head and told it's all okay, 'Hey, they weren't REAL Christians (like you and I)" or "The bible foretold it so we can basically forget about it." Four people are going out your church back door while you drag one 5yo kicking and screaming in the front. You'd think you'd want to get down to the why of that. But, no......
You're talking like we haven't left.
No desire for 'platforms and stages' , prefer to be enriched by by altar(s) and communion.
Just a thought : it could be framed in a Scriptural picture, that the institutional Church has piecemeal ( 40000 pieces ) been "exiled" to Egypt for food due to the "drought" in " the Promised Land". It appears ro me, that the exiled consist of those who have abandoned the faith, not those, who like myself, have abandoned God-forsaken Denominationalism ( Christianism ).
