The fact that jay has been working so hard the whole show and the first thing he hears from is family in MONTHS is “if you dropped out don’t feel bad.” Like what?! You could visibly see how uncomfortable he was the entire phone call. I would literally never talk to my mom again if I was treated that way. I get that she might be trying to be realistic or humble him or something but he’s beat himself up and had several aggravating moments to the point that the only thing you should be telling him is how proud you are. He’s under so much stress and she did nothing to alleviate any of it!
