He hit with such devastating force and tourqe that he left many ball carriers on the turf as well as his own teammates if they were close at 6 foot 3 250 lbs he was unblockable and once he got his big hands on you it was over always knew how to wrap up and finish the job! I remember an interview with Alex Karras and Dick Butkus came up and Alex told a story about one game it was a beautiful sunny afternoon and at the line the center for the Lions felt drops hitting his hand and thought it can't be raining , when he looked up there was Butkus spitting on the ball so the QB couldn't grip it.

Remarkable how often Dick Butkus hit a running back and stopped him dead in his tracks. They rarely squirmed away to gain another 2-3 yards after Butkus made initial contact.

When he hit you, you knew it and weren't going anywhere. A different game back then. He'd see a lot of laundry in today's game. Most of today's players couldn't hack the NFL the way it was played then.

Back when football was good. Now it's a flag if you touch the other player.
