    Hi, I'm currently in college doing a BTEC in Sport and Exercise Science (national extended diploma, predicted D*D*D*). I'd very much like to pursue a career in physiotherapy, however I'd like your opinion on whether I should do a BSc or MSc in the degree (MSc with Sport Science as an undergrad degree). I've heard that the undergraduate course in physiotherapy is very competitive and I doubt I'll be offered a place at any of my desired uni's (Birmingham, Livepool, or Nottingham). But then what are the chances of me being offered a place onto a Masters course doing physiotherapy after doing my undergrad degree? How do I ensure I stand out from the rest, who I assume the majority will have the exact same undergrad degree as me and secure a place on the course? I'm afraid that after obtaining a degree Sport Science I won't be offered a place anywhere and it would've been a complete waste of time. Please let me know your thoughts, sorry for the long message.

    • @ArrayRay_physio
      @ArrayRay_physio 3 месяца назад

      Hi, Woohoo team BTEC Sports! Getting into a physiotherapy course is competitive no matter the route that you take. I took the route of BSc Sport Science then MSc Pre-reg Physiotherapy, it was the best decision for me. Don't doubt yourself, I did not expect to get into Birmingham. It is true that with the masters you will be applying for a space alongside other Sport science/ therapy graduates, you may also have people that want a career change. The masters typically have a smaller cohort, mine however had 60 people which was considered large in comparison to the usual 20 people. The masters also requires you to grasp the information at a faster rate because the degree is only 2 years long // The intensity is not for everyone. On the other hand BSc degrees accept more applicants, usually people have less work experience so the "playing field" can be fairly even. The degree is over 3-4 years giving you more time to develop your skills and knowledge. To stand out from others get direct and indirect work experience (shadowing, working as a support worker, attending talks, getting a part-time job with a vulnerable population or just the public comes with various transferrable skills). I hope I have not caused more stress with this answer. ArrayRay :)

    Hi Mariah, thanks for sharing, I enjoy your videos coz I can relate to a lot of them. Recently watched the one you made about physio myths and had a good laugh because they’re all so true! Nice to hear your experiences and reflection. I’m in 2nd year on my apprenticeship and I’m on a respiratory placement (week 3 of 6). In the critical care team as well so I’ve learned loads and similar to you, feel more comfortable with respiratory but I know I still have loads more to learn. I’m fine with the post op patients and have been seeing them by myself (long arm supervision type of thing). Do you have any tips or learning resources you can share specific to improving my knowledge of ventilators and skills of treating ventilated patients? Thank you in advance!

    • @ArrayRay_physio
      @ArrayRay_physio 3 месяца назад

      Hey Rodney, it's lovely hearing that you enjoy my content and find it relatable. Too many misconceptions to address haha. How do you find the apprenticeship? erm, for tips I would say speak to the ITU nurses as they are working with the vents all day they always seemed happy to answer any of my questions. At my Trust, we have resources on the shared drive so check there. However, you could also search for the make/model of the ventilator as the company may have their own useful guide. In terms of teaching, your skills will improve with experience. It's easier when you have a patient case in front of you than in a textbook e.g

      @RodneyDubePhysioApprentice 3 месяца назад

      @@ArrayRay_physio thank you so much, I will chat more to the nurses and yes, on the shared drive there is a PowerPoint presentation on vents which I will look at as well. @RodneyDubePhysioApprentice most places offer 6 months but I really didn't want that, so I seeked trusts that offer 4 months. I think 4 months is ideal for me. The only time I wanted longer was when I was on complex medicine and I spent 5 ½ months with them

    Hi, i have my physiotherapy interviews coming up, on average how many patients do you see per day and do you find you manage to get all of your documentation finished before the end of your shift? Thank you.

    • @ArrayRay_physio
      @ArrayRay_physio 4 месяца назад

      It depends on the speciality, patient needs and priorities. On complex medicine if I didn't have a chest or discharge planning then approx 12. On intensive care 7 or 8 patients. Respiratory wards 10 if not chest physio required. On a day full of discharge planning it could be a little as 5 patients depending on the complexity of the discharge

    Starting my first rotation next week, potentially in front door, after a season of struggle interviews 😅 Any advice on the best way to prepare ?

    • @ArrayRay_physio
      @ArrayRay_physio 7 месяцев назад

      Congratulations on getting the job! Interviews can be stressful, I remember stumbling my way through some of the questions. In terms of prepping front door, when I did it as a student I think i was just told that there was not much prep. I was told that I would see a lot of falls, dementia and would do some discharge planning to avoid admissions. In terms of advice for a new band 5, I would say just try and be yourself. It is easier said than done. But, I have let my personality shine, spoke to other band 5's because they are in the same boat as me. Another thing that was nice is that my trust does new starter lunches, so whoever likes will come along and meet the new starter.

I have spoken to the new team more, and they seem less 'scary', I also know that I have made great friendships with my current team, and those will not be lost when I rotate. I am excited to enhance my respiratory knowledge as I enjoy doing chest physio. Maybe I'll do a reflection on here how my first month has been then again at the end for a comparison.
