    Theses aircraft saved butt many times inVN. In Korea in ‘88- ‘89 I saw them many times and they brought tears to my eyes. They are as needed now as then.A mini a Warthog.

    VMO-2 was in the hanger next to ours, starting about March 1970 in DaNang and attached to MAG-11. Our squadron was VMCJ-1. They were some great guys and arguably some of the best pilots in the Marine Corps. The OV-10 was twice the A/C compared to the crop duster that replaced it.

    One of the most versatile warbird platforms ever created. The OV-10, while only being a propeller driven aircraft had some serious PUNCH and could carry a wide array of ordinance similar to the Douglas Skyraider. The OV-10 and Douglas Skyraider could carry the widest array of ordinance of any airplanes used in Vietnam. Armed with rockets, missiles, and an auto-rotating cannon, this aircraft could unleash a hellstorm on ground targets, was highly maneuverable and agile in low level ground assaults, and was loved by the pilots who flew it. This aircraft was a spectacular ground assault aircraft and was one of the precursors to the A-10 Thunderbolt II (aka: Warthog) which became the primary ground assault and close air support in the 1970's. After the Army versions of the OV-10's were eventually disarmed, they were then used primarily as a reconnaissance aircraft from that point forward, although there were reports that some ships remained armed in Vietnam, even after they weren't supposed to be anymore. The OV-10 was the successor to the OV-1 Mohawk and had similar components and equipment including the side facing radars and also a similar bowed out canopy which gives excellent visibility for the pilot and co/pilot observer an almost 360 degree view around the aircraft, above, to the side, and below all the way down to the ground, which made the aircraft an excellent close air support aircraft because the pilot and observer could get a full view of the battlefield below. Many of the Bronco's flew single pilot (no backseater) during Vietnam. The Bronco also has a large storage compartment which was modified in a variety of ways from carrying Special Forces troops which used the platform for insertion and extraction from combat areas, air ambulance duties, and even had one version with a specially designed minigun which came out of the back storage area on a rotating platform controlled by the pilot which could rotate around and point in whatever direction they needed whilst flying the aircraft similar to the modern rotating cannons that turn in whatever direction the pilot points his helmet, although the OV-10 Bronco system was a different design and had to be manually rotated by the pilot. Both the OV-1 Mohawks and OV-10 Bronco's continued in service past Vietnam up until the 1980's. The OV-10 fleet was eventually reduced as the military was losing interest in the aircraft due to newer aircraft with far superior abilities and technologies that had brought into the US Military inventory and they were almost all but retired until after 9/11 when the war began in the middle east and the need for an reconnaissance aircraft designed for specialty missions where a smaller highly maneuverable aircraft equipped with updated technology could be employed in low altitude missions. The military resurrected a few of the old OV-10's and brought them out of mothballs so to speak and refitted them with modern avionics and equipment and it has been used in the middle east for special missions by specially trained pilots and co-pilots/electronic warfare officers with the OV-10 platform. Even 60+ years later, this aircraft is still useful to the United States Military Forces which is a testament of how good this aircraft actually is. The U.S. Military was so impressed with the performance of the aircraft in it's resurrected duties, they now are ordering redesigned Sky Tractor aircraft normally used by crop dusters and turning them into small, highly maneuverable, propeller driven, two person aircraft used for specialized missions which not only have the most up to date avionics, but can be armed with a wide variety of munitions.     I grew up around these amazing planes. My dad was an F-4G Wild Weasel pilot stationed at George AFB in the 1980's. I loved the OV-10 so much. The shape and design always had my interest even though the jets were fast and loud. I was drawn to the Broncos because of the mission along with service in Vietnam and the stories from the pilots that my Dad knew. This Super Bronco is bad ass to see.
