Advanced math bearings problem | IB SL Math AA and AI
Have you been confused about how to do bearings in your math class? Why do we use bearings in math classes? We'll answer these questions in this video.
Bearings can be confusing because it requires an understanding of not only directions, but parallel lines and transversals, properties of triangles, the Sine Rule, and the Cosine Rule. All of these topics work together to problem solve the question "What is the bearing of one point from another point?". Then when you add that you turn, move to another point and have to return to the starting point...It can get really confusing sorting through all that you need to know solving that kind of bearings problem in your math class. But stick with...

What do you do when you need to solve an equation and your variable is in the exponent? In this video, we'll look at solving exponential equations without using logarithms. I'm not familiar with Arrow's Impossibility Theorem and after a _very_ quick wikipedia scan, it looks like it might be too ambitious. It seems like it would be a better EE. Overall, I tend to advise students to not just pick a mathematical topic and write about it. This is why I created this video for you to go through a 'topic generation process'. I know that HL IAs might be a little more theoretical, but as I have stated many times, I haven't taught HL, so I can't speak to that directly. If you are a SL student, I would definitely advise against.

    Hey thank you so much I found this video really useful! I am currently doing "modelling my basketball shot" but I am a bit stuck since I do not know where to go with this, since there is no research question that it answers. I was wondering if you have any tips or suggestions for me, Thanks!

    • @LikeAMathClass
      @LikeAMathClass 28 дней назад

      Two things... First, this is technically called an Exploration. So you don't need a research question. The main focus is (a) what are you investigating and (b) how does the _mathematics_ drive or shape your thinking? Second, there is a sample IA that is given to teachers to show students that models a basketball shot. Generally speaking, it is not advised to do the same topic that is in one of the sample IAs, unless you approach it differently. So you may want to ask your teacher about seeing that IA to see if your approach would be different and/or advisable. Good luck!

    what if i have the graph only???

    • @LikeAMathClass
      @LikeAMathClass 2 месяца назад

      Sounds like I've got another video to make! :) Domain: You need to look at the ends of the graph. If there are arrows, the graph continues on in that direction infinitely. If there are dots or the graph ends, then that is the end of the domain. Remember that open circles means that point is not included where closed dots means that value is also included. Range: Find the highest and lowest points on the graph. Sometimes these will be curves (called the maximum or minimum) sometimes it will be arrow (like noted in the domain). If the endpoints don't go higher than the highest/lowest point, then that is your highest/lowest value in your range. If the arrows point off past the highest/lowest point, then the range will continue on infinitely in that direction. I hope that clears things up a bit more.

    Hi, and thank you for the video! I'm taking SL AA math, and I was wondering if you could give me some advice on my ia topic? I was thinking of doing a mathematical proof of the flaws in democratic voting according to arrow's impossibility theorem, and this topic connects graph theory, combinatorics, matrix algebra and game theory. I'm really worried this topic lacks in the components of mathematics, as it does not include graphing any kinds of functions or using calculus, and I'm wondering if you think this could still be a strong IA topic?

    • @LikeAMathClass

      To be honest, this feels waaaaay over the top for a SL Math IA. If anything, it sounds more like an EE than and IA, or more HL than SL. I would strongly recommend against this idea.

      @LikeAMathClass 2 месяца назад

      As I have mentioned (in comments and I believe the video as well), I haven't taught HL. I've only taught SL Apps and SL AA. That said, the general construction of the IA is going to be the same across all four IB math courses. The big difference between SL and HL is the complexity of the mathematics. So if you feel that you really want to do a Probability IA and you have a solid idea from my other video where you are generating ideas (here's a link in case you missed that one ruclips.net/video/Fr9r6uRlbDg/видео.html), then my recommendation is to double check with your teacher to see if they agree that your level of mathematics will be appropriate for HL Apps. I hope that helps!

    Goodmorning Sir, is there anyway for me to improve this research question: Analyzing the Trends and Correlations of Swimming Olympic Statistics(Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly) over the past 10 Olympics. I’m currently very lost in terms of the Math IA(AA SL), I’ve been able to work on my other IA’s, but not the math IA.

    • @LikeAMathClass
      @LikeAMathClass 2 месяца назад

      Hey. Well, this sounds like a lot of repeated mathematics, and the calculations/mathematics being done is a scatter plot, correlation, and possibly a trendline. Repeating the same thing over and over (4 different strokes) will knocked down with your points, _unless_ something different is happening with each stroke, which I'm guessing won't be the case. The only think I can think of, which might be difficult to do, is to try to track the motion of one of the strokes of your choice and try to model that. You can get software where you can plot points along a video and then try to model that stroke. And if you are a swimmer as well, compare that to your stroke. I get that this is getting a little further away from your original topic, but you can compare the different strokes and then look at statistics for the different strokes and see if you can see where there are issues with your stroke. But ultimately, I would not recommend you doing the same thing over and over with different strokes. I hope all this helps or gives you some more ideas. Good luck!

      It's possible, but it also sounds like a stretch. I prefer modeling of a a natural phenomena rather than man made structures. And with the natural, I prefer things that are in motion rather than stationary objects.
