Big D's Fig Farm
Добавлен 25 сен 2012
I am a full time Pastor of a great church in Berlin, MD and growing figs is my hobby. I have grown figs on my property for over 20 years, but in 2023 I caught the fig bug and increased my fig farm from 3 varieties to 28. Then in 2024, I added an additional 20 bringing my total collection to 48 varieties (for now). I enjoy growing figs and trying new varieties of figs. Up to 2023 I just ate them and made fig jam, but my hobby has really expanded and I now sell figs, fig jam, and plants locally. I also offer cuttings for sale and trade in the winter.

We scored our first ever Sister Madeline's Green Greek at a 10 out of 15. But this is a first year tree and I think it has lots of potential.

It is October 19th and the temps here in Zone 7b on the east coast of Maryland are 70s during the day and 35-50 at night. We have been in severe drought here for weeks. Most fig varieties have stopped production but a few keep producing a few here and there.

Rooting Fig Cuttings experiment
Просмотров 1413 месяца назад
Normally I wrap the top of the cuttings with parafilm to prevent the cuttings from drying out. Then I make a Fresh cut at the bottom of the cutting and only cut off a very thin piece off the bottom. Then I scrap the cuttings on three sides slightly just down to the light green cambium layer just under the dark outer bark of the cutting. Next I brush on Clonex rooting gel on the bottom and all t...

This was our first tasting of the Marseilles Black VS. we scored it at a 9 out of 15. It was a good tasting berry fig but scored low on size and production which could change as it grows and matures.

nice fig, I have to keep mine in a green house to get fruits
Since you mentioned it, what method do you usevto root your cuttings? What zone are you located in? I'm in zone 6B. Is White Madeira a good one to grow in the ground in my zone?
I have found that ProMix, in 32oz clear cups, moist but not wet, on Heat mat, in a room I keep at 70, with low light until they show green growth has given me the best results. I also prefer thicker cuttings. Once they show strong green growth I move them under grow lights. Then to my greenhouse or to a shaded area in my yard for a couple weeks. Then to full sun.
Happy New year pastor. I would be interested in 2 cuttings each the Celeste and the Brooklyn white. Please let me know how to go about purchasing or trading cuttings. Best of Health and Happiness. Petar zone 6b NJ
Hey Peter I am not trading currently as I have enough to manage currently. I am selling the Celeste and Brooklyn White Unknown for 3 for $10 plus shipping. I will get those together and let you know exact shipping and then we can settle up. I will try and get that together for you in the next day or so. I just need your address if you are interested.
my email is pastord@sonrise.cc
do you sell cuttings of the hog fig. ? i heard they split from excess rain do you find that to be true?
some but not as bad as other varieties and really I only had some split late in the season
and yes I have some Hog Island Cuttings for sale $10 for 2 plus shipping ($5)
Nice review. The best one's this season here in Denver Co for me was white Madeira #1, rdb, red Lebanese BV, Violetta de bordeaux. It was a great season.
Yeah that White Madeira #1 is an excellent fig!! The rest are good too but WM#1 was so delicious
Brother, I've asked for cuttings to buy or trade a couple times and you didn't answer. Are you getting these comments? It's in another video where you said to let you know. Last video or one before that one.
this is the only comment from you I can find
@@darylmccready9164 I'll email you which video and copy and paste here as well.
Nevermind, I see you found them. Lol

For scrapes i think there’s a key that if you don’t scrape you need to have freshly cut a layer of bottom off (freshly cut) otherwise the cells don’t have that “signal” to produce growth.
Looking forward to more videos!!
I'm definitely interested in cuttings of your big Brooklyn white if you have any for sale or trade.
Good Morning I have plenty of Brooklyn White Unknown Cuttings all you would want Lol How many do you want? They are 2 for $5 or 5 for $10 plus shipping of $15
@darylmccready9164 I'd like to get 2 cuttings please. That video really impressed me.
@@kellerf150 It is an impressive tree every year it never disappoints. They are 2 for $8 plus $5 shipping.
@@darylmccready9164 how do I pay you? Do you have Venmo or PayPal?
I got over 100 varieties, lots of work
“Winner, winner…figs for dinner!” 😊
5,000 figs off of 2 Celeste figs trees? Just wow. I’m in Southern California, and I grafted a Del San Jaume Gran this spring. It actually was a vigorous grower and producer already, AND produces good figs even now in November. My fave at the moment. 😊
yes they are very productive every year
DSJG is a great fig for sure
Maybe Madeleine Des Deux Saisons?
Great! Now I need some cuttings. Maybe we will meet on a mission sometime.
Wrapping it up! Nice. Doing the same here. So, you mentioned letting you know on cuttings (or maybe plants). Anyway, because of the "not sure" factor, Columbero Unk and Renate Unk interest me. Oddly, I don't have Ravin de Calce so it interests me too. What do you charge for cuttings and plants? Can trade as well. I've got a large selection rooting now with several repeat plants I can trade in a month or so. It'd be better to ask what you're looking for than to list them all I think. Let me know.
Following up on this comment. Will you take some cuttings to sell or trade?
Hey I found your comments!! I will check today and see if I can get couple cuttings from the three you mentioned The two unknowns and the Ravin De Calce.
Do you plan on selling or trading cuttings this winter?
Yes
Good morning! Blanche de Deux Saison is green when ripe. I can send you pictures of mine if you like.

What soil mixture are you using?
Beautiful trees. I might have missed it in the video, how old are the bigger trees? Thanks
My Celeste trees are 20+ and 12 years old and my Brooklyn White is about 10 years old.
Vườn rất là đẹp quá
Beautiful looking fig are you a commercial grow or are you a hobby gardener? I'm trying to acquire Ronde de Bordeaux this variety apparently it ripens really early hopefully I'll get it by early spring next year.👍
No I am not what I would call a Commercial grower. I do sell cuttings and trees and figs and jam. But it is a hobby of mine. I am a full time Pastor of a church.
New subscriber here, love your reviews Big D, sweet to the point 4 to 5 minutes long, wasted so much time on other 15 to 30 minutes reviews to make comparisons for my collection here in Michigan 6b, keep it coming, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the feedback. It is a lot of fun.
This is another fig tree I picked up this year, I can't wait for the fruit.
Mine has been very slow growing. I am not sure if it is because of where it planted or if it is the variety. I did get a few ripe figs this year and they are good figs though.
@@darylmccready9164 I suspect it may be due to the fact the young plant is surrounded by matted grass everywhere, VDB figs are known for being slow growing, but not by that much.
I have a very small Brooklyn White, thanks for the intel.
I am not 100% sure that is what mine is. But it is a beast when it comes to production. over 2,000 figs every single season!
I've been wanting to comment forever on your videos. You two are great.
Thanks kellerf150 we have a lot fun making them
Great. What zone are you? We just went to 8a last year from 7b. My potted plants are going in the ground this year and I'm going to be hopeful for their survival like you're doing so I'll be watching in the Spring for what happens at your place.
I am in zone 7b. I don't plant this late. I wait for spring once past the threat of frost
I store them in my shed over winter in the pots
@@darylmccready9164 Sorry, meant next year. It'll be in the Spring.
Comments working now.
It was a great season!
