Episode 5: Palm Garden in Ålesund, Norway - Jubaea, Trachycarpus, Phoenix canariensis, Washingtonia
Filmed january 2025
A tour of my exotic garden (zone 9a) at the west coast of Norway at latitude 62N. Blessed with the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and the mild westerly winds we can grow some exotic plants here that would be impossible to grow elsewhere on this northernly latitude. In my garden you can find palm trees like Trahycarpus fortunei, Phoenix canariensis, Jubaea chilensis and Washingtonia robusta. You can also find different types of Yucca, Cacti and Agave. We do no use any artifical heating for our plants during the winter.

I live in korea. korea temperature is in spring-summer(very humid in summertime) : 10~30 celcius degree, fall-winter : 0~-20c degree (very dry in wintertime) do you think korea temperature is okay to survive outside? korea has many meta sequoia for landscape tree. but none of them have giant sequoia.

    I really enjoy your videos. I have many of the same palms here in Portland, Oregon and a few others (Bismarckia Nobilis, Mexican Fan Palm and Nikau Palm, which I have to shelter when we have frosts.) We have much warmer summers than Alesund but we are 100 km from the Pacific and can get colder winter weather than you have. I have several clumps of Musa Basjoo hardy bananas in our yard. Every year the frosts kills them back but they always reappear as new shoots in May when the ground warms up. After that they grow rapidly reaching up to 4 meters by the Fall before dying back with the first hard frosts. (Right now they are partly damaged and partly brown, but still upright.) I recently learned not to cut the stalks back after they die from the frosts, even though they turn into disgustingly slimy extremely tough ropes, because the new starts are protected by the dead portions. I now let them turn into compost or for the larger stalks, let them dry out in the Spring sunshine before trying to cut them off. Last year we had two episodes or record cold weather, six weeks apart, with a week of below freezing temperatures, with gusty winds and heavy ice and snow accumulations and lows of -10 degrees centigrade. The weather before the first cold spell had been very mild so the plants had not hardened off. I wasn't sure the bananas would make it through the extreme cold. But they did, although they were later getting started (June) and only reached about 2.5 meters instead of 4 meters in height. Based on my experience I suggest you just put compost around the base of the bananas but let the tops die back; no need for the boxes. Then in the spring put some black plastic over the compost atop bananas to accelerate warming of the soil. I look forward to hearing about your progress with the palms and other zone-challenging plants.

    Flott video. Vi hadde Chamaerops Humilis og Trachycarpus Fortunei plantet i hagen vår her i Molde. De overlevde noen år uten beskyttelse, før de visnet bort. Trolig er forskjellen mellom det litt kaldere vinterklimaet i Molde kontra det milde Ålesund akkurat nok til at det ikke går bra med palmer her i byen.

    • @nordicexperience_
      @nordicexperience_ 5 месяцев назад

      @@nordicexperience_ Chamaerops visnet hver vinter, men kom tilbake om sommeren. Jeg gravde den opp til slutt, og kastet den, selv om den hadde nye skudd på sidene. Den er utrolig herdig. Trachycarpus tålte ikke fuktigheten, kombinert med kulde. Alle blad ble brune. Så om den ikke blir utsatt for fukt etterfulgt av frost, ville den trolig ha klart seg. Sikkert lurt å ha et tak over den i vårt klima. Begge er nå borte. Det var et mislykket eksperiment. Det er helt i grenselandet med palmer her i landet. Trolig er Ålesund en av de bedre plasser i hele landet for slik eksperimentering. Imponert over det du får til.
