Memorable Melodies - an introduction to writing idiomatic melody lines
Просмотров 5715 месяцев назад
This video doesn't go into much detail, but its just to plant the seed of an idea about writing memorable vocal lines using idiomatic writing. It includes an example of both non-idiomatic writing and idiomatic writing using the same backing, lyrics and even mostly the same pitches. It's aimed at Synth-V users mostly because I hear a lot of really excellent work with expert backings, but seeming...

Whisper vocals in Synthesizer-V
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.5 месяцев назад
In this video, I go over how to create whisper vocals in Synthesizer-V, for both spoken-word, and husky voice singing. You can add a huge amount of expression using this technique. I've created this video a number of times over the last couple of weeks, and every time I do, I find either something wrong with my technique, a better way of doing something, or a more versatile end result. I think ...

RPM Update - changing a couple of notes to improve the flow

Working on "The Sun Comes Closer", finding that by changing a couple of notes at the end of the verse, it smooths the transition into the chorus. Playing you all I have so far on this too. Got rid of the bridge, and moved things around a little for a more cohesive song. Still some problems in the storyline to fix (the chorus I think), and then figure out an ending, and its almost done.

    HI, I'm just starting out with Synthsizer V and I found this video and firstly just want to say thank you, it was a great help. I've progressed quite a bit but I'm getting what I see and a fairly major stumbling block. I've purchased a few singers, Solaria being one (great voice) and my issue is what I see as a lack of sharpness to some hard constanents, like say a B (ber) or M (mer) and also words begining with S i often find seem to slur a bit rather than being a tight 'ser'. I know the option of increasing the strength and length of each component in a word and also the 2 or 3 alternative sound options and also trying to rewrite word phonetically, but still not getting a great result. I have typed in 'ser' and had as a separate block infornt which sort of works but can give a clitch into the next part of the word, like a hesitation. I mean the vocal sound is absolutely wonderful but the diction could be better for clarity of the lyrics in a fuller backing mix (even if i mix the vox up really high still struggle to pick out some words) I wondered if you had any tips or tricks to improve the harder constantants to cut through more, esp as my song are often quite high energy with a full band backing - many thanks

    • @themidimachine
      @themidimachine 3 месяца назад

      If you're using Synth-V Pro, you could try splitting the voice into two tracks - in the VST version, its in the Settings panel, and in the standalone version its in the Render panel. In both cases you're looking for the option that lets you split the aspiration channel. You could then apply different processing (EQ, compression/transients) to it. You may actually be able to do it without splitting the channel with EQ/compression, but I think splitting the channels would make it easier to get the result you're looking for, especially if trying to make the transients have more attack. The official manual is here - svdocs.dreamtonics.com/en/home. Go to svdocs.dreamtonics.com/en/synthv/plugins/instrument#configure-audio-channels-for-output if you're using the plugin, or here - svdocs.dreamtonics.com/en/synthv/basic-usage/render#render-audio if you're using it stand-alone for details of the options for splitting the voice.

      @@themidimachine thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Inspired by your comment about the actual mixing I studied the levels in more detail to see that most of the bits I was having issue with were quite quiet looking at the sound wave, it sounded fine solo but in the mix was lost, so I lifted the levels on the bits I had issue with and that made it much better. Sounds obvious and a bit dumb of me not to consider that before but I guess I assumed the vocal was all correct and natural with levels. I still think the diction on the hard constantans is not quite perfect but that's a pretty minor complaint given the overall amazing brilliance of this software Anyway, thank you and I'll enjoy future videos by you.

    This was an interesting little watch! One thing I'd like to mention about English vocals: pretty much every AI voicebank for SynthV can sing in English, no matter the language it was initially recorded for. To make the voicebank sing in English you simply need to change the Language setting (it's almostly at the top of Voice panel), which by default is set to their primary language. Though, it's important to mention that often these voicebanks tend to sing with an accent (how strong it is I can't really say, since English isn't my first language, so if you want to hear a certain voice in English I would recomment searching up covers of English songs using the voice that interests you and just listening to a few to decide if you like the pronunciation)

    • @themidimachine
      @themidimachine 4 месяца назад

      Yes, accents are an issue. I'm not sure if its the same with all languages, but as English speakers we seem to want to hear singers without strong accents, especially sounding like English isn't their first language. Even Natalie gets criticized from time to time over this, but certainly many consider Weina unusable, and even Sheena is borderline, so many of those that are not specifically intended for English speaking tend to get ignored except by those looking for a very specific sound. I think at this point, we have enough voices to not need to compromise on things like this (even though we still need more new voices!). Its a bit weird that this is the case, and I have no idea why it is.

    Great comparison, and a very nice song! If you're at all interested, there are actually three other female English AI voices available for SynthV that are available if you go onto their companies's respective websites. I'll provide a brief description of each vocal, if any of them sound interesting to you! They're all more so targeted at the "anime" side of the program's audience, but are definitely great voices in their own right. 1. Anri Arcane from Audiologie. A great youthful voice with a lot of personality, but can sometimes have fairly plain phrasing. Pretty diverse in terms of tone, although I find most of her vocal modes to be superfluous. An upgraded version of the original Anri vocal, which is no longer available. 2. Eleanor Forte AI from Animen. A lovely soft and mature vocalist with very delicate pronunciation. In older versions she sounded a bit unnaturally "thick", but she's improved with updates. Unfortunately, not a very tonally diverse voice, and can be somewhat difficult to use. Also has a lite Standard voice, but it sounds completely different and can't be used in anything monetized. 3. Tsurumaki Maki AI English from AH Software. A native Japanese speaker, but the voicebank itself is English. She was created before crosslingual synthesis was a feature, and therefore had separate Japanese and English voices in both AI and Standard form. Has a cute, somewhat raspy tone. However, she can sound almost as mature as Natalie with her Adult vocal mode and some edits. Has a stronger non-native accent than any other English vocal, so be aware. Bonus: Stardust from Quadimension. Not *officially* listed as an English vocal, but has English recordings that make her sound much more natural in English than other Chinese vocals. My absolute favourite vocal for the program, has an even more diverse tonal range than Solaria and can be used in just about any genre. Has a very distinct husky tone. I wouldn't recommend trying to purchase her unless you're *absolutely certain* that you want to, because she's even more expensive than Weina and is extremely difficult to purchase from outside of China, usually requiring a proxy service that'll charge you like $30 to forward an email. Also has a very annoying and strict commercial license.

      Thanks for adding your review of these extras. I've never considered them because of their vocal characteristics, but they do all deserve to be included. It's hard to find good demos of these voices doing original songs. I've heard a couple of Eleanor Forte AI that sound pretty good. I think the others just go too far on the anime side.

      I'd be happy to share my SVP file if you like. I'll grab it later (it's on my studio computer). I don't actually do much in the way of micro-editing. Pitch editing I only do when something is way off... dynamics we obviously need to instruct Synth-V on, but again, not really micro-editing - more or less just broad sweeping changes in tone or mood through a song. I trust the programming of Dreamtonics/Eclipsed for the voices I have, and don't feel the need to do much with the vocal lines I write. I'll add a comment later with links to a couple of SVP files (one all as written, and one converted to Manual mode, so that you can retain Hayden's pitch info with other voices even when you don't have Hayden).

    As a native spanish speaker, and music producer I notice that melodies in different lenguages are different because of their idiomatic characteristics. I think to achieve natural idiomatic melodies, what it takes is to pay attention to what the natural accents of a sentence are, and then try to follow them musically using intervals and whether the strong syllables are on a down or up beat

    • @themidimachine
      @themidimachine 5 месяцев назад

      Yes... speaking has a natural cadence right? It strikes me that Spanish has a fast cadence... would that be a fair statement and if so do you notice that Spanish songs also bias towards being sung fast?

    • @themidimachine
      @themidimachine 5 месяцев назад

      ...and by the way, it looks like cadence is the word I should have been researching for the rhythmic part of emphasis and flow. I always think of a cadence in the context of chord structure. Lol

    • @mensamin
      @mensamin 4 месяца назад

      @@themidimachine Yes, cadence is a great word to describe it. Words in spanish usually are longer than in english, and we like to use a lot of adjectives to describe action and subjects, so the songs tends to be more '''wordy'' an thus we pronounce more syllables than the usual song in english I think. So it feels that we sing faster.

    The latter is certainly more normal, but the first one was interesting and unique in a consistent way; it had its own idiom, so to speak.

    • @themidimachine

      ...but which one is more memorable? I think at least for a non-musician, you're more likely to remember the second one, and so as a device for popularity, if you can give someone an ear-worm, they're more likely to come back for a second listen. Combining the two concepts to give a push-pull, will give you interest and a memorable hook for the best of both worlds. It's proving tricky to find some theory driven research on this specific device, and I'm coming to the conclusion that "idiomatic" certainly isn't a word commonly used in this context. Still researching...

    Nice reminder. Lyrics are always difficult for me, and if I get something down, I am usually to relieved and just go with it. No doubt much improvement could be had by reworking the lyrics to hit the proper emphasis, remove awkwardness. Lots of good topics underlying here, like how different languages effect both the lyrics and the movement of the music. And Madrigals! Not many madrigals written today, but the tool box is still useful for emphasizing meaning.

      On the subject of language, I was wondering whether language makes a difference, and in particular to those writing in a language other than their native language. I can't speak fluently in any language other than English (and I have trouble with that sometimes LOL), but I imagine fine nuances of word stresses might affect the ease of idiomatic writing. Mind you, I think we all have trouble with it, especially when we haven't been trained formally and also when we want to avoid the super-predictable phrasing. When I started out with Synth-V, I thought that you had to use parameters to emphasize words and syllables, and that was kind of too much work for me. It's quite recently that I realized when you write naturally, the syllables emphasize themselves to an extent.

    Nice demo/tutorial on MIDI composing with some nice tools. I usually use SynthV in standalone and output WAVs into the DAW. It has some advantages but using it as a VST looks like it works quite well. I might give it a try. I also really like the Ample Martin. A bit complex, but very powerful programming ability and great sound. Need to check that out too. Thanks for the vid.

    You can use the Dictionary feature to determine Phonemes. Create a Dictionary and you can search words that sound like what you want and get the phoneme breakdown. Then you won't have to add notes, and remove notes. You can just use the dictionary on the right hand side menu. If there's a pronunciation you *always* want, you can add the edited word to your dictionary and it'll populate using it as a starting point.

    • @themidimachine
      @themidimachine 5 месяцев назад

      I must admit that I don't use the Dictionary, but I don't see that working in this case, because its two different pronunciations of a single spelling. You can only put a spelling in the dictionary once, so yeah, its fine if its all you ever use, but either could be right in this case depending on context. There are a number of mechanisms that you could use. The one I might otherwise use in this particular case would be to simply mis-spell the word - red vs. reed would work in this case. I was simply using one of the mechanisms for figuring out phonemes. The reason I've never really got into using the dictionary is because it doesn't often mis-pronounce a word. In fact, I find it pretty uncanny how good it is. But I appreciate your viewpoint, and I'd also be interested in knowing if I'm missing something here about having two words spelt the same in the dictionary.

      @@themidimachine Hey there, I apologize if I came off aggressive. What I was trying to say is that you do not need to add a word to the dictionary to use the phonemes feature it offers. IE: You could type "reed" into it to see the phonemes and then edit the word "read" into your piano roll. I was simply suggesting that the extra clicks of changing to the pen tool, adding a note, editing the lyrics, and *THEN* Copying the phoneme to the other word and then deleting it, could be removed by just using the "Word" field on the dictionary tab. *I* don't save words, I was simply sharing that you could. I do a lot of metal/hard rock with this application, and there are a lot of syllable broken words. Learning that "Dee/Luge/shone" is needed instead of "delusions/+/+" is tricky :) I'm also using Richy and Hayden as whisper vocals in RAP mode and adding a truck load of distortion to achieve metal vox...and it's working. I wish they'd come out with a hardcore singer, but I know it's not their target audience. Mai helps with sounding like "Baby Metal" :)

      @@davidnovin200 Hi David, I didn't get an aggressive vibe. No apology needed. Sorry if I gave that impression in my response. I tend to try and say stuff with as few words as possible, and it can give the wrong impression. :D All good. I get what you're saying now. BTW - did you create your dictionary from scratch and just add words as you come across them, or did you import one from somewhere as a starting point? They tried the hardcore with Nine-Zero. Not a great choice IMO, but hey, I guess it was new ground for them. Eclipsed Sounds looks like they're open to suggestions for ideas for new voices. I saw something, I think on their Twitter account about encouraging people to e-mail them with ideas. Could be an idea. Bet that would be good! I know I'm looking for a Chaka Khan, so that's what I'll be campaigning for, but send them an e-mail, and may the best man win. 😆

      @@themidimachine I just created a new one, and saved it. I only have like 5 words in it right now. Mostly I use this for demoing new songs for my singer, and words he pronounces in unique ways get added to my dictionary. Otherwise I just use the word function if I need to find a phoneme. The other thing I like to use it for is to use words that sound like WHAT I want them to. intentional mispronunciations, as it were. :) I love that this tool exists, but as a metal song writer, I don't see it replacing my singer, who sounds like Max Cavalera of Sepultura. No AI is gonna give me that tone :)

    • @themidimachine
      @themidimachine 5 месяцев назад

      I had the phoneme checker as my desktop for a while, but honestly, I found it quicker to think of a word with a similar sound and put it straight into S-V to find the phoneme I wanted, because I never had to leave S-V. It hasn't failed me yet as a technique. But it depends how you work. I guess a printed phoneme checker stuck to the side of the monitor would be even quicker. I think flow is important, and anything that breaks that - even leaving Synth-V (in this case) for a second, cuts the flow and gives the possibility to forget what you're doing. Especially for old people like me. 😏

      No matter how much you think other nations butcher the language, it is still English. You can change the pronounciation of some words to make them English sounding, but you would certainly expect an American singer, for example, to use American-English.

      @@themidimachineugh he's just a Brit supremacist. Can't blame the companies for making the voices American, it's literally the most popular accent when it comes to anime dubbing, even if I don't like it. I have managed to get Ritchy to sound like a Brit with some success, actually, so it's not like these models are too rigid.
