XPTs at Yass Junction
A trip out to Cowra coincided with a couple of well-timed visits to Yass Junction Station to capture the XPT. First up was ST23, operated by XP2014 and XP2004, arriving in from Sydney and then departing up the grade towards Melbourne. Later on we returned to capture ST24, operated by XP2005 and XP2000, which arrived on to the platform bang on time, before departing towards Sydney.

On the first day of Spring, ST24 charges its way north towards its next stop Goulburn Station. With the sun beginning to set, XP2016 leads XP2002 over the Coles Lane level crossing at Yarra, NSW. Thanks to Miss 12 for her iPhone clip that I used in the edit - she‘s a little legend 👍🏻

Here’s ST23 motoring away from Yass Junction Station on its journey south with XP2005 leading XP2014 in the consist, as captured from the grassy area behind the KFC at the Yass Service Centre on 6/7/2024 @ 11:51am. I managed a x3 camera shoot with this one, again with the assistance of miss 12.

Through the curves at Cullerin, the very-close-to-time ST23 service, lead by XP2013 and supported by XP2015, approaches Gunning Station on 30 July 2023. From the Grabben Gullen Road overpass, a strong and chilly westerly winds pushed through some cloud shadow just at an inconvenient time (while miss 11 sat in the warmth of the car on her📱😔)

Excellent video - as always - my friend; quite possibly your best yet. 🙂You have captured so much good stuff here but the thing that surprised me the most is the broken horns. It's very evident that the XPT is worked very hard isn't it? Dents, scratches, grime...it's still a beautiful train though.

A ridiculously expensive service that hardly anyone uses. Two trains each direction, each day. Imagine how many road coaches could be had for the same amount!

This is a great clip the windmill the power lines the country landscape the sunset. And clear view of the xpt and tracks going up and and down and seeing the xpt rock side to side on the classic Australian train tracks. Well done.

@@Xpresstrainography Wanted to ask: Was XP2016 making an odd sound at all? It is hard to describe but it had a very noticeable "rumbling" rattle sound as it approached & went by when I saw it.

are these not modified versions of the british class 43?
Yes - they are a significantly modified version of. You could say Australia took ‘inspiration’ from the HSTs. The XPTs has a different nose design and cab layout, a down-rated engine, larger cooling unit, differen suspension design, a shorter power cab length … these are the differences I can think of off the top of my head.
From memory I thnk British Railways actually helped the NSWGR make/design them
@@RailDoesTravel Most were ‘made’ (manufactured) in Sydney (Granville), and I think some power cars were made in Melbourne? (I could be wrong). But, yes, there was some design and support from the UK 👍🏻 Common wording on the internet is the XPTs were ‘based on the British Rail-designed High Speed Train …’.
