Why and How Did I Make This Video Series? (Episode #6 of Information Science Workout)
This video series uses artificial intelligence tools to generate a moving puppet and to convey student voices. Here, I provide a high-level tour of my creative process and resources for making Information Science Workout. I also recognize inspiration from Hailey Siracky; music by Evert Zeevalkink; and paper puppets by Jordan Grace Owens. A more detailed (yet still relatively short) statement on my video-making process is available, here:

The episode at hand is about a social concept, and therefore is best for groups to do together. The idea of "social epistemology" is experienced by passing information from one person to another, while keeping the library in mind. I apologize in advance that the star librarian goes rogue in the end! Here are additional resources for learning about social epistemology: Egan, M & Shera, J. (1952)...

    Giới thiệu về Hành vi Thông tin: Loạt video này khám phá sự giao thoa giữa thông tin và giải trí, bắt đầu với tổng quan về hành vi thông tin như một lĩnh vực nghiên cứu trong khoa học thư viện và thông tin (LIS), tập trung vào cách cá nhân đáp ứng nhu cầu thông tin và các thực hành mang tính xã hội. Các Khái niệm Chính trong Hành vi Thông tin: Video đề cập đến một số mô hình và lý thuyết về hành vi thông tin, như mô hình hái quả của Marcia Bates và mô hình lồng ghép của Tom Wilson, phân biệt giữa hành vi tìm kiếm thông tin và hành vi tìm kiếm tài liệu cụ thể. Thực hành Thông tin: Một góc nhìn thay thế cho hành vi thông tin là thực hành thông tin, tập trung vào các thực hành mang tính xã hội và cách mọi người tương tác với thông tin trong những bối cảnh cụ thể, như các nhiệm vụ công việc hoặc thói quen xã hội. Tìm kiếm Thông tin trong Cuộc sống Hàng ngày (ELIS): Khái niệm này được Rayo Savolainen giới thiệu, nói về các hoạt động tìm kiếm thông tin ngoài công việc, đặc biệt liên quan đến việc giải quyết các vấn đề cuộc sống hàng ngày và duy trì phong cách sống của cá nhân. Giải trí và Hành vi Thông tin: Video nhấn mạnh giải trí là một bối cảnh quan trọng nhưng thường bị bỏ qua trong hành vi thông tin, đề xuất rằng tập trung vào giải trí có thể mang lại những hiểu biết mới về cách con người tìm kiếm và trải nghiệm thông tin để hưởng thụ và khám phá những trải nghiệm sâu sắc trong cuộc sống. Introduction to Information Behavior: The video series explores the intersection of information and leisure, starting with an overview of information behavior as a research area in library and information science (LIS), focusing on how individuals respond to information needs and socially constructed practices. Key Concepts in Information Behavior: Several models and theories of information behavior are discussed, such as Marcia Bates' berry-picking model and Tom Wilson’s nested model, which differentiate between information-seeking and information-searching behaviors. Information Practice: An alternative perspective to information behavior is information practice, which focuses on socially constructed practices and how people interact with information in specific contexts, like work tasks or social routines. Everyday Life Information Seeking (ELIS): Introduced by Rayo Savolainen, ELIS refers to information-seeking activities outside of work, especially related to solving daily life problems and maintaining one’s way of life. Leisure and Information Behavior: The video highlights leisure as an important and often overlooked context for information behavior, suggesting that focusing on leisure can reveal new insights into how people seek and experience information for enjoyment and profound life experiences.

    Read Buckland’s paper in my first doctoral seminar and have always thought it was missing something significant - information as relationship. I don’t think information is a thing, the letter “S” is not information it’s just a squiggly line if written or a configuration of pixels if typed. The information emerges as a result of my understanding of what the squiggly line means. If a baby sees the same squiggly line, it is meaningless data.

    • @INFIDEOS
      @INFIDEOS Месяц назад

      Dear Don, a big thanks for your thoughtful comment. I wish we had more comments of this kind on my channel. My sense is that you are raising the fundamental philosophical question whether information is objective, and "out there" free of the human mind OR if it only emerges upon human sense-making. I appreciate that you place the former in a different category--"data" you say. I agree with you, Don, that Buckland doesn't explore this matter thoroughly in this famous paper. I think he had other issues in mind (such as recognizing the Documentation tradition in Information Science). But my own mentor, Dr. Marcia Bates, comprehensively defines information, and her point of departure is this very issue you raise, of whether phenomena like the letter "S" is information even beyond human consciousness, that is, does information exist in the Universe outside of human consciousness? She says "YES!" (e.g. planets in distant galaxies have information). I am not philosophically versed enough to say more, but here is her paper if you are interested [pages.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/bates/articles/fundforms.pdf]. Thank you for watching the video and contributing your perspective.

      Thank you for writing. I hope you act on this passion for Library and Information Science. It is a wonderful field and career. Here is a helpful page from the American Library Association that has resources on becoming a librarian: www.ala.org/educationcareers/libcareers/become This page also explains the different kinds of libraries (public, school, academic, and special). The American Library Association also keeps a list of "Accredited Master's Programs" -- these are the programs that award a masters degree which qualifies you to be a librarian. Unfortunately, that link is broken (www.ala.org/educationcareers/accreditedprograms/directory), so you should check back or call them at: 1.800.545.2433. (You see, they would likely be quick to fix that link, since librarians really care about such things.) I am assuming that you are writing from the US, but if you are in Canada, here is a separate list of accredited library programs in Canada: erudera.com/study-programs/library-science/canada/. Keep in mind, you can also learn some of the skills for working in a library in Library Technician programs, which are more aligned with undergraduate studies, such as these (in Canada): cla.ca/careers/schools/library-technician-programs/. But a library technician degree will not allow you to get promoted into the better positions within libraries, and many library technicians return to school for the master's degree. I hope this helps get you started. All the best wishes!

    I remember watching this video after rediscovering my old childhood dream to be a librarian. I was lost after I had to drop out of my studies in accountancy (mostly because of my mental health situation during that time), but after remembering the dream I had as a child, I felt hope. This video was the first one I came across in my research, and the one that gave me the first spark and the final push to move forward once again. Now, I'm enrolled at one of the top universities in our country as a BLIS student. Thank you so much 💓

      @INFIDEOS 2 месяца назад

      So sorry to hear of your headache, DCL. Thanks for watching and commenting. Here are two options to potentially help if you return to my videos in your class: 1.) Play the video but just listen (don't watch). My videos are anchored in that narrative (audio track) not in the imagery on the screen (which is just decoration). They can function like a podcast and some of my students prefer this way. OR, 2.) Read the paper instead! (That's how I learned Buckland's ideas myself along with thousands of past generations of students in Information Science. I'm not being sarcastic, reading is still a better mode of understanding for many people.) Hope these strategies help by providing alternatives. Best wishes for your studies in Information Science.

      Concise, well-explained, and beautifully edited. Congratulations! I hold a bachelor's in Library and Information Science, which is unusual in a few countries where LIS is usually studied at the graduation level. Now I'm doing a master's in Cultural Studies, and I am thinking about returning to Information Science in a future PhD (if I actually decide to pursue one). I'm uncertain whether I can combine my interests with Information Science. I know IS is a broad field, a metadiscipline as you explained, but I feel that it is becoming loaded with IT subjects. I know it's a reflection of our times, but those do not fall within my scope of interests.

    Thank you so much for this video Jenna, although it made me even more confused it also made the experience of defining or studying definitions more open, gave it some air. But what would I draw... When I´m reading about different definitions of information, I often think of the mushrooms' huge network of mycelium, which connects not only to eachother but also the surrounding nature and constantly communicates or sends information. To me it's a nice picture of information, or maybe rather some aspects of information.

    • @INFIDEOS
      @INFIDEOS 9 месяцев назад

      Thank you for sharing that vision! I like its organic nature, which fits with the findings of the iSquare study, as shown in this video. Right now, I have a master's student who is interested in studing information through drawing, and their intention is to ask people to draw data, information, and then knowledge, in sequence. (Following the famous DIKW pyramid.) We hope this helps is to sort out these confusing and blurred concepts. I appreciate your comment and attention to INFIDEOS. Onward!

    Found this summary really helpful but has left me more confused. It seems that "information" is so ambiguous and we are trying our best to make sense of the noise by classifying it. Yet there is so much overlap. For example, information as data is defined to be what resides in our computers and information as texts/books can be both digital or exists as a hardcopy. But a digital copy of information as text wouldn't be considered as data as well? I am finding it difficult to find concrete boundaries which is conflicting with my understanding on various types and sources of information.

    • @INFIDEOS
      @INFIDEOS 9 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment on the nature of information. In truth, my field (Information Science) has been debating the definition for about 50 years, and Bates' comprehensive review (mentioned in the video) identifies around 100 attempts. There is even a theorist who declares we simply should give up the effort! Hence, this matter even confuses the best experts! For my part, I have attempted to define information through drawings (you might enjoy that video, also on this site and linked at the end of my comment). All this is along way of saying you are in good company with your confusion, and I impressed by your reflections. I hope that over the years (and it will take time), you might come to your own understanding. Sincere good wishes, Jenna My video: ruclips.net/video/t213bFR4Oe4/видео.html Bates' great survey of definitions: pages.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/bates/articles/information.html

      Thanks for your comment, Sarang.Chavan. My videos follow a standard ratio of my voiceover (volume) to the music, and this is set by my video-making platform. But because my voice can be soft, it may require an additional adjustment, that is, raising my voice or decreasing the sound of the music. Hence, I will do that in future videos. I'm very sorry if this matter frustrated your viewing and learning, and I appreciate the feedback. All the best wishes, Jenna

      Why thanks very much for your note (and the other one, too!). Did your professor tell you that I first presented "Turn, Turn, Turn" at a conference and it was a sing-a-long?! When I moved from one "turn" to the next (which happened several times), everyone sang the chorus: "To everything, turn, turn, turn, there is a season, turn, turn, turn...and a time to every purpose, under Heaven...". I am hoping to start a trend of sing-a-longs at conferences, and perhaps you could try this in class? It appears you are doing a great job as a student of Library and Information Science. Keep it up! And, please give my warmest regards to all the great scholars on the Borås faculty.

    Thank you for a very thought provoking video. I'm not entirely sure how i would depict information myself in a drawing. I would probably lean into the overlap of communication and information, as I see it information is the what communication transfers from person to person ("information about the existence of perceived facts, opinions, emotions"). The picture would probably be of a group of humans connected by arrows marked with symbols of communication (books, phones, speech bubbles, paintings or pictures).

    • @INFIDEOS
      @INFIDEOS 9 месяцев назад

      Yes, that's a good idea for a drawing and you are not alone in that conception. Truth be told, after the iSquare study (in which I was trying to understand information, visually), I ended up more confused than ever! Well, maybe not confused but at least aware of ALL the possible visual conceptions of information, often metaphorical or poetic. And now, I am not sure what I would draw, myself. My mentor, Marcia Bates, drew a chair with lines around it, suggesting that information is something "meta" to all things, yet not the thing itself. I hope you have been reading some Marcia Bates, too. All the best wishes for your studies, and please keep coming back to INFIDEOS.
