Planet Shivers Video The Legendary Bruce Bickford
Просмотров 494 года назад
In April when I began recording the Planet Shivers podcast, visual artist Abigail Bramen was the first guest. During that recording, I also filmed our conversation with one stationary camcorder-just to see how it would look. I watched through the footage afterwards, and wasn’t happy with how the video came out as a whole. The footage ended up on the shelf until two weeks ago, and as the podcast...

Howard Stern with a complete lack of sensitivity, talking about Moon getting a job like she's some "thing" as he gets ready to blast FZ (her father) with questions about cancer plowing through without a thought for Moon's feelings and Frank's feelings. Whew. And almost all of the other interviewers offer us a very obtuse way of interviewing someone. It is as if they've never learned how to be civilized in their entire lives. They sort of cover it up but they're pretty ruthless. Patronizing with the exception of Dave Brenner. Whew love ya Frank. Just read Moon's book and last month saw Dweezil. Frank I'm still giving your family my money. Love you Frank. Grateful for these interviews even if the interviewers lack delicacy.
I love Zappa but he is definitely insane.
Well, now that Moon has a new book out we know the truth....bad husband, bad father, misogynist.
Frank sadly passed away on my birthday, as a Zappa fan i was devastated. it took me nearly three days to play all my Zappa music in his memorium . RIP Frank youll always be missed .
I’m very grateful for being alive to see and experience Frank Zappa ,Bob Dylan. Keith richards ,Jimi Hendrix and the other renaissance musician of the60s and 70s Tulls Ian Anderson , Joe Cocker ,Traffic’s Steve Windwood and Dave Mason. And so many more that I didn’t mention out of kindness to others who might not want to read a book .
I feel Mr. Zappa was the most versatile composers who ever played a guitar. And play guitar he could. Guys like Frank Zappa are not three finger guitarists. Having the kind of mastery over his guitar that Jeff Beck, Pat Martino let’s get real for just a second ,many of the so called ‘greatest ‘guitarists of the later 20th century wrote with great commercial success would have to be honest and admit that he played all over most of the idols of rock n Roll.
If anyone is interested in Frank Zappa's home life, not shown in other books, from getting up to going to bed, composing at the piano, rehearsing with the Mothers, visiting rock stars, freaks, family squabbles, and more, then read 'Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa 1968-1971 Laurel Canyon'. It is my story from meeting Frank in London when publicising the Mother's first European tour in 1967 and ended up living and working in his house with Gail, Moon Unit, and seven others, thus the book's unique access.
Great Book. I loved Moon's book as well. My least fav? Frank's autobiography. He got a bit pedantic at the end.
@@ramblinrose8 I agree, and he left out so much. Do you remain a firm fan of Frank's after reading Moon's book?
@@paulinebutcherbird I do but I have a caveat: I always knew there was a bit of Zappa that was abusive. I have always been a bit obsessive about the artists I like. For example I used to work for Grateful Dead and have seen over 400 shows. BUT I was never able to just follow "blindly." Unlike so many of my men friends who absolutely worshiped these artists I couldn't help but see the whole picture. So I always had a hesitation. Smart in way...completely stupid in another. Not a portrait of a whole person, eh? There was always a knowledge that the disrespect I saw was something I could not value and went against the very premise that many of the artists I love portrayed. No matter what Frank said about women's sexual independence mocking the "eclair" in a girl's underwear isn't emancipating. If you have to put someone down in order to up yourself it makes for a demonstration of insecurity. For example I always called the GD scene "the peace, love and puck* you" crowd. My experiences as a woman alongside with the only woman I know who worked constantly on the road with GD was Candace Brightman was very harsh and even her stories are a bit horrific about how the men in GD behaved (an exception here would be Eileen Law.) There was a hypocrisy that was hard to ignore. You know...men have sexual independence but women are *hores...throwback. And often these artists had a bit of avoidant personality disorder. They didn't/do not HAVE to trudge through the days like us mere mortals do. There was always some sycophant to do their bidding. So why tell your wife about the affairs you are having if you don't have to...if she'll stay no matter what you do, no matter what abuse you give?! Genius and fame will never be enough for me. My sense of self doesn't bear arrogance and narcissism well. Because there were rarely actual consequences to the hurt they gave it left a bit of distaste in my mouth. Don't like a person...don't bother to resolve conflict...just replace that person or avoid the discussion. Don't like a situation, why be an adult and try to improve it...just leave. So while my men friends consistently raved about artists such as Frank there was a part of me that could not completely abide by their horrific and selfish behavior. What it actually means to me is that these men were extremely intelligent and exceptional but only to a degree. Only to the art that they created. Everything else? Left them not as intelligent in my eyes. And...rather stupid and selfish. Eric Clapton was the worst. Layla? Only to dump Boyd's clothing out the window. He went to the bottom of the pile for me. True Genius comes with a lack of selfishness. I know people will debate this. Picasso is another example. There are so many and isn't that sad in and of itself. All these incredible men with broken personalities and selves? These men might have been genius in one aspect of their lives. But one aspect is such a small range of territory. In the end I can only see them as lacking and stilted and no matter how much I love them/their work they'll always be the "brother" I'm giving a "nougie" to in the shoulder for being so mean and doltish. Certainly not men worthy of romance. And not completely the genius everyone swears they are. Because all of them KNEW or KNOW better. Their selfishness just gets in the way of their humanity and I find that very limiting and sad. To almost have the entire "Holy Grail" only to be in your own way...a bit of a poor show I say. Drop the ego. There is where the true genius lies. Sorry for such a rant. To be honest I've felt alone often times in circles of friends. For example I just went to The Sphere to see Dead and Co. Fabulous. But while my friends got all dreamy eyed (and I'll admit I did have some amazing moments) there is always a part of me that sees the gestalt or the whole of the person/people/band/situation. Which is to say I've met a few geniuses in my time and not all of them behaved so poorly nor used the excuse of their art to hide behind. The short answer to your question is yes. I remain a firm fan of Frank. In the end I just think these men could have given themselves more than they chose to give themselves. We all make choices. To find a loving man with genius is a true gift. Rather that than to find a genius with a selfish heart...sigh. No judgment. Let's just say they have given me insight into the kind of man I don't want and the kind of man I do. And to the woman I want to be. Oh and FREAK OUT! Was fantastic!! I loved it. My fav Zappa book by far. And in my opinion the most clear sighted. I loved it more than Frank's own autobiography. In the end Frank's book got a bit pedantic in the end. No one needs a lecture. But FREAK OUT! just fabulous!
@@ramblinrose8 Wow! I think in among your comment is a salient one that the rock stars did what rock stars do and it's up to women to say yeah or nay. In Gail's case it was hard when she had four children and in the end, Frank came to respect her which is very important. He not only gave her the job of running his business he also, at the end, when he was thinking of running for president, said he would have Gail as his Vice President. So, in the end, she won. Thank you for your kind comments about my book. It is very nice of you.
A wise old owl, was Frank Zappa... Gone way too early.
Zappa - the “engineer” of music ❤️
Wish he were still here. Would like to hear his take on Trump.
Thx +++ !!
I've heard weirder names In America!
I love Frank Zappa.
Another day, another sausage.
The present day pachuco refuses to die
One of the best things about Frank was his hate and loathing for Republicans. Can you imagine what he’d think about these Trumpets? Like gag me with a spoon they are so gross, eww 🤮.
Yes, Moon Unit is a very cool name, but people usually don't go by their first and middle name. They were all a little too caught up on the name when she played a part in creating a culturally significant though horrible (on purpose I'm sure) 1980s pop rock parody song. It's always worth a laugh and to recognize that the young folks right now are speaking a lot like 1980s valley girls. She was Moon Zappa as a VJ. Her name is Moon. Moon Zappa to the rest of us, for sure.
They copy each other the same dumb questions, LIKE TODAY. They want to get money not even taking the time to think, let alone research, a different one.
wholesome
I wanna be known as Ima dick, lol
Moon is a great name....but Dweesal is not.
Yeah, we thought the names were a little odd. But look at the stupid ones some other stars have come up with. Apple Bluebell Blue Ivy Kulture Kiari Cephus Gravity Raddix Moroccan Pilot Inspektor Zolten Moxie CrimeFighter Sage Moonblood Audio Science Puma Sabti Seven Sirius And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
At the end of this film I had tears in my eyes. This man was really special in all imaginable ways and I am not surprised that his offspring are at least as amazing. Thanks Frank!
quel plaisir de voir cela...
This is a wonderful tribute production. And yes, it's the last name that's important.
Frankie was a cool guy..and he was from Baltimore..he had street cred
That was beautiful. His children must miss him tremendously.
It's so funny to see some comments here criticizing him for be "so edgy," yet are unintentionally doing the exact same thing with their "edgy" counters to all the comments praising him. They feel it's a good thing to think differently than everyone else (which is true and wonderful and great!), but why is that suddenly bad when people do that to things THEY like? The edginess or counterculture-ness of people like Zappa is often seen as un-American too, because it doesn't fit into the so-called norm, but he was probably one of the most genuine and normal people out there. Look at the way that family loves each other! I wish my family was that loving and "normal." And that final sound bite after the credits roll encapsulates the dude. Honesty is what we all lack these days and then, and he wants more of it TO celebrate America. He was and is more real and more true and more American than 99% of all the flag wavers and chest thumpers out there.
Frank Zappa.....the true meaning of original
People asked Frank Zappa the stupidest questions about his kids' names. His kids were really great looking, as well.

Phenomenally curated. Thank you.

RIP Frank
the man is pure genius
and a wonderful family man, a role model
It's hard to believe that he's really, really gone. 😢 and at such a young age too, 52 years wasn't nearly long enough to have this wonderful, funny, genius here on Earth with us. You are sorely missed Frank! 🥺😢😘🥰🥰
I'm a real Frank Zappa fan, I stared liking The original Mothers & really liked his music. What I would of liked to do is, talked to Frank about his album covers & some of the music he wrote, he was not your normal rock musician & neither were some of his early band mates, u really had to impress Frank to join his band either by the instrument u played or u had some side thing going that would impress Frank too, he liked people that played weird or odd instruments because as he said, "When I write music, I never really know what kind of instrument I'm going to need at that time." He disliked drugs & wouldn't allow any of his members to use them while on tour, if he caught u, u were fired, but not being at practice & on your own u were free to do what u liked. Frank didn't do drugs & didn't expect his band mates to do them either. As Frank said, "I'm freaked out on my own with the music I write.

Always forget how good Howard was. He was genuinely funny. Miss those days.
Aww... so glad you posted this. It brings back some great memories of a beautiful moment in time
I love Frank's middle finger at all of humanity's stupidity. What a transcendent figure.
Moon says her mother was a "nice lady." I don't think she thinks that now. That's sad for her.
Each one of us are unique and gifted each in our own way. Frank was part of my older sisters generation through which I was introduced. Sure I thought he was out there but that is a good thing, not a bad thing. I admire people that think outside the box and wish more people would expand their stiff boundaries. If people today would think for themselves being honest and took pride in the craft as Frank said instead of doing what their told we wouldn't be in the mess we are today.

Moon was a natural comedienne...
The best interviewer in the whole segment was Howard Stern.
“Tobacco is my favourite vegetable”
fame is boring
I still have my "Zircon incrusted " tweezers!
I always loved Frank Zappa as a performer and i enjoyed the fact that he was a proud Italian man . God bless you Frank and your family.
