Maximizing the PM2: Spyderco Scale Swap & Liner Delete
@6:25 if you seperate back (open up)part of liner insert a screwdriver shaft between liner and scale and slowly push shaft towards lanyard, it should just pop free.
Thanks for the comment!! I hadn't ever tried that when I made this video (long ago), but I've used it with mixed success other times. My favorite method is with a lanyard tube press that I have now.
You’re comparing apples to oranges. You should be comparing it to the regular AD 20. One just has a thinner blade ………..
Thanks for the comment.
i am sure your viewers know they don't have to take knife apart to just change scales, right?
I certainly can't know what any particular person knows or doesn't know. I'm of the opinion that if you are taking apart the Manix at all, a replacement ball cage is worth it, but there's nothing at all wrong with the OG plastic! The liner delete is also fun. Anyway, thanks for watching!
First vid on yt I've been able to find that showcases the flytanium lotus scales on the para 3. Really interested in your thoughts on the feel of the styling versus the standard stock scale shape. Great vid!
Thanks for watching!! I dig the profile of the lotus scales, it rounds the knife out well and feels more comfortable in my hand.
oh! LBGTQ scales how sweet
Color o royalty!
Really expensive for a 3 finger grip. Bummer.
Indeed, thanks for watching!
I think fact of this is something strange level of linear specs going on and other way how easy to buy this knife ... Yes money goes right way here.
Cool review. Love it. Knife is worth IT.
Thanks for watching!
Where did you get your mat from?
I got this one from Blade HQ!
Too bad they don’t make it in left hand version.
Not ambi. Damn.
So cool test! Appreciate it!
Glad you enjoyed, that's for watching!
i found that if you disassemble starting from the show side, youll never have to deal with pivot spin because the pivot is a D shape on the opposite side
Thanks for watching! And for the insight!
Interesting test and results. Not knowing the Rockwell hardness of either is most likely where the true difference lies. The Rat may be 61-63 hrc and the Redout may only be 58-60 hrc. As a knife guy who collects all kinds, I've found that the composition of the steel frequently means far less than the hardness does. Thanks for the test footage, well done!
Thanks for watching, your feedback, and encouragement! I agree hardness and edge geometry make a huge difference! I'd love to be able to test this with the same knife from the same maker in the same HRC range, but these were the 2 knives I had 🤣
Great video but this auto focus feature of the camera is giving me motion sickness.
Sorry about that, it's tough to get right!
Hello. I would like to ask you a question: I used to have the AD 10, and its liners were made of aluminum. In the AD 20.5 and yours, the liners are made of steel, but I don't know what type of steel. Do you think it's necessary to apply any oil to this part? I'm not referring to the part of the liners that face the scales, as those are protected, but to the part facing the blade
I'm not sure what the composition is but I think it's pretty corrosion resistant. I'm sure it would rust if you dropped it in salt water but for regular pocket time I'd doubt oil is necessary.
Thank you VERY much.
You are welcome!! Thanks for watching!!
Best Bugout upgrade is oversized Phosphor Bronze washers. Grab some Flitz and polish them up real nice before install. Makes such a difference. My $300 Carbon Fiber Bugout had the worst action that I have ever seen in a knife.
It's interesting, my CF S90V was also the worst action of the bugout I've had. Most have been pretty dialed, I have one with the oversized washers and it does make a difference. Thanks for watching!
I dont get why so many people want to replace those blue FRN scales with smooth metal ones with no texturing and no color. If you ask me these scale swaps are all downgrades, not upgrades. The blue ones look and feel better.
There's nothing wrong with the bugout as is, take care!
I like that cold steel quite a bit and the japanese bread knife looks like a banger!! Good video tyvm lol jk i like these knifes
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video! How much weight did it add to the bugout?
Thanks for watching! I don't recall exactly the weight gain but I think it's only in the neighborhood of .3-.5 oz
This knife looks the way sunsets make me feel
It came out great! Thanks for watching
M4 all the way. People say it’s hard to sharpen. Just don’t let it get a dull curved edge. Just polish it on a 6000 grit stone once or twice a week if it is edc. Or polish it as needed
Thanks for watching! I'm a big fan of M4
Yeah that’s a miss for me. For that price you should be 100% satisfied. That’s a major reason why I avoid cross bar locks especially on high end knives, just never have had a detent on one that I like. My closest is the s90v/carbon mini freek, but I’m sure the small thin blade helps with that
Thanks for watching and sharing your feedback! The S90 mini Freek is an awesome knife!
dang, might have to pick up some of those para 3 scales. very slick w/ the clip too
Thanks for watching!! The para 3 came out great.
There is no debate, Magnacut steel is the most stainless and well rounded steel to date. M390 and K390 are great, but Magnacut is the new sheriff in town. I got myself one of Andrew Demkos new Machine Ground MG AD-20's in Magnacut with his modified V2 Clip Point and it's one bad MOTHA F*CKA
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Magnacut is awesome and so is the AD-20 such a great combo. Enjoy!
Where did you get the washers from?
The washers also came from AWT, thanks for watching!
Available now at USA made blades! Finally scored one at retail I’m stoked
Enjoy! Thanks for watching!
A little late but you should do some durability tests. You can do a budget knife vs a high quality one You can also use the quality knife for another video like resharpening or swapping scales, or just a complete rebuild. That way everyone can see the difference between quality How to clean and fix a knife And some cool mods I'm a big fan of the benchamde Osborne 940 Maybe do a video comparing the blades and durability of the locking mechanism with a cheaper "knock off" Hope this helps good luck. -Sergey K
Thanks for the input! Very much appreciated
I just scored one on pure luck - a certain seller sent an email sharing a drop of these will be available this Friday - well, I hadn't heard of the slim, so I went a looking, and lo and behold - the URL for that drop was hidden, but live - I placed an order, hope they don't cancel on me! it's black G10 with Magnacut stonewash... I've wanted one for so dang long!
That's awesome! Congratulations!
You want to sell those green g10 scales??
I already sold them to another viewer! Thanks for asking!
@@olbubs thanks anyway! 🙏
Great review. I'm very happy with my Anthem and just as happy with my Narrows.
Thanks for watching! Glad you are enjoying the knife!
Wait…my anonimus can baton wood? I get its strong but cruwear is really that strong??
Tougher than s30v with better edge retention so really batoning should be no issue. Edge geometry makes a huge difference though a convex 20-25 degree will take a lot more abuse than a really fine edge.
Perfect EDC knife I absolutely love mine.
Thanks for watching! Glad you are enjoying the knife!!
It's MGE Exclusive. It's a distributor exclusive so any store that gets knives from them will also get the exclusive. Beautiful knife. Did you just get this? I swear it was sold out.
Thanks for watching and the correction, I learned that I misspoke after the video was posted. This video is somewhere close to a year old so none readily available as far as I know.
Looks awesome and thumb studs too 👍🏻 Somewhere in the house I have pm2 with cooper scales 🤔
Get er dun!! I did a couple para 3's as gifts and they came out great!
As a dad, I appreciate the size comparison with the dinosaur toy and saltine cracker. Perfect.
It’s funny that the cheap d2 out performs the cpm, you just confirmed what I already thought, these steels are almost identical
I was surprised at the results for sure! Thanks for watching!
I recently got the benchmade saddle mountain skinner for fishing and hunting, but I was hoping to also use it as a general camping knife more often than that. Will it do fine at that job or should I get something stronger like the anonymous?
If you have the S30V saddle mountain it'll handle general stuff pretty well. If it's the S90V version it'll probably be a bit chippy for bush crafty tasks
@@olbubs Oh wow thank you for the fast response, yeah I have the S30V steel one. I've just been second guessing myself for if I should have gotten the benchmade anonimus instead as I plan on camping more than fishing/hunting. I do have a mini adamas which could possibly do some more of the heavy lifting, I'm just second guessing if I should trade it in for a anonimus or not. I really do love the design, feel, and weight on the skinner but I just worry about it's practicality.
@@tylerwroblewski2716 personally I wouldn't worry about the S30V skinner not holding up. Cruwear is definitely a tougher steel but you sacrifice corrosion resistance significantly. For a reference point the benchmade bushcrafter is an S30V knife, thicker blade stock yes but plenty tough. Your edge angle probably came from the factory a little steep for general camping use but I'd just use the edge on it and then sharpen to somewhere between 20-25 degrees at your first sharpening. If you are set on wanting the anonimous you can just go for it too! Both are great knives! Heck get both at some point 🤣
@olbubs Haha thank you so much for the advice, you made me feel a lot more confident in the knife. I think I'ma use the skinner as my edc fixed blade in general and camping, and just used the adamas for anything rough. Might pick up the anonimus in the future though since it would be to cool to have a really big workhorse like that. Thanks for everything, you easily earned a sub!
anyone know where you can buy an extra set of bronze washers for the manix 2?
appliedweaponstech.com/replacement-pivot-washers/
Duuuude. Ty
I’m converting my LW to G10 and Liners. I do not care for the LW at all
@@Ryan.S924 totally get that!
Would you happen to know what size bearings one would order if they wanted to try to put bearings on the Manix instead of washers? Someone told me about a company called Skiffs or something like that but in order to buy some you have to know the exact size ID and OD and how many bearings. Anyone tried this?
the oil in the aftermarket world is probably MUCH better than what theyre using in the factory
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
I don't think the sage 5 is under rated it's a very popular design. If you want to know a design that is madly over looked and is freaking fantastic it's the k390 leaf jumper.
Thanks for the input
You should get that backspacer cerakoted green.
That would be super cool indeed!
why?
Thank you so much for your video, mate. Crystal clear content. Please provide a link to that mat/pad you are using. Cheers
Glad you enjoyed!! Here's a link! www.bladehq.com/item--Blade-HQ-Silicone-Knife-Takedown--117092
Why is there a knife in a mousetrap??😂
It's an Ontario Rat 😜! It's an Easter egg to my favorite short I've ever done!
@@olbubs oh OK I get it now.. funny lol
This would be the long way to replace them. Probably be able to replace them in about 5 minutes if you do one side at a time. Future scales may not line up exactly so you may have to fully take it apart anyways. Nice vid 👍🏼
Definitely the "long way" but I prefer cleaning all the parts while swapping. Also the pivot has to come out completely to swap the 2nd side. Flytanium makes a tool that holds everything together while the pivot is out to do the swap faster. I featured that tool in my bugout video, but truth be told I prefer the long way that really only takes me 10 minutes or so when not on camera and trying to explain the steps. Thanks for watching!!
i ordered some copper scales on amazon and installeed them did you have problems aka like the right side scale didnt want to fit ?
I did have for issues where the liner would fit into the scale and I sanded the liner a bit to fit!
@@olbubs sick I also had that problem I was wondering if I got fake scales
Just want to mention, Kunwu recently came out with milled clips for this knife, and they significantly improve the aesthetics, the ergonomics, and even the pocket retention. The new clips are a lot less flimsy and reflect the quality evidenced in the rest of the knife.
That’s awesome, thanks for sharing!!
Would you sell the green scales?
I would. Send me an offer to olbubssharpening@gmail.com and we can work out details.
