Midwest Airgunner
Добавлен 15 окт 2011
My channel is dedicated to promoting the safe and humane elimination of pests that can be found in the backyard as well as the farm with some odds and ends mixed in as well.
My main focus is the removal of starlings, pigeons and sparrows from the dairy farms around my area.
Here is brief overview of how big the starling problem is in America.
Back in 1890, Eugene Schieffelin decided to release 60 pairs in Central Park, New York. One year later he released another 40 pairs. Of the original 100, 68 died and 32 survived. Since then they have become a 200 million strong problem. With few natural predators (mostly raptors), they wreak havoc on our native bird populations; Woodpeckers, Wood Ducks, Tree Swallows, Bluebirds, Purple Martins, Great Crested Flycatchers, Screech Owls etc. They can transmit parasites and diseases, including E-coli, which can make the animals as well as humans sick. A flock of 1,000 birds can relieve a farmer of 100 pounds of food a day.

Pellet Expansion and Pork Tenderloin
Testing the expansion of 5 different pellets using pork tenderloin at 30 yards. Wanted to see how much expansion I am really getting when going to the dairy farms for pest control. The Maverick is set up to shoot FX 18.13 grain pellets at 881 fps. I am testing the H&N Baracuda Hunter, Hunter Extreme, JSB Hades, H&N Terminator and the FX 18.13's. As always please leave any comments below and I hope this helps in your quest for the right pellet for you.

At one of my dairy permissions and when I drove up to the barn the noise was much less than in years past. But they did have lots of starlings.....again. Reducing them for sure but they are so prolific! Shooting the FX Dreamline Lite Bottle version in .177. Shooting JSB 8.4 grain pellets at 730 fps. Was there for a little over an hour and probably got 200 total. 100 or so fell in the main aisle...

Great experiment. I may have missed it in the video, but what velocity were these going? I am looking for some farms near me and was planning in using the 18 gr. JSBs around 750 fps to avoid pass throughs. I expect your test had them going faster.
Shooting at 881 fps. I will not shoot JSB Diablo's in barns. They never slow down and go thru the barn siding or roofing. That is why I use a hollow points so that I get good shock but not the pass thru. Shooting all the way thru that pork loin did not slow down the diablo pellet at all. Left marks in the board behind it.
How did you charge him. $5 per bird?
Bit late to the party but did you check the tension on the mags they may be damaging the pellets as there being loaded
Nice realistic testing for sure with that powerful gun.🤠🇺🇸
Expensive test at today’s meat prices!🤠🇺🇸
For sure. but you guys are worth it. 😉😉
I bought one second hand, it's a got a 3rd party Regulator in it. I like it a lot. It likes H&N 18.13 Barracuda's the Most. Very accurate. Seems decent quality just the trigger lets it down.
What are you getting paid to do this?
I bet you shot over 500, easy. I saw your 100 starlings in 10 minutes, so wow. Way to go. I used to trap the house sparrow with the repeating elevator trap. I eliminated 100s
I bet you shot over 500, easy
I’ve done these tests often for several years and the most violent expansion in .22 cal pellets at or near 900 FPS is from my experience in this order… #1 Daisy Hollow Points #2 H&N Crow Magnum #3 H&N Barracuda Hunter #4 Gamo Red Fire And the reason I don’t list the other with splits or nuclear emblems is that most of the time they don’t really “expand” inside a bird when hunting or doing pest control. They aren’t really inside the flash long enough IMO from my experience.
Well that's interesting. Question: How accurate are the others you listed besides the hunter? The Hunter works for me out to 70 yds. The crow magnums were atrocious in the accuracy department in the Maverick. Could not hold 1" at 25 yds.
Great job following the bird down to the fan. Free feathers for everyone!
Thanks. It took a bit longer than expected.
Nielsen then jsb knockouts then fx hp . Are what I found best for not over penetrating in that order. Nielsen has so many choices for their slug designs. I don't shoot regular pellets anymore. I always had problems with the poor manufacturing quality. I would like to try swaging my own slugs. Good luck on no holes in your siding.
I have done quite of bit of testing with skin on chicken breast. And had neilson slugs come out at probably a quarter of the fps.as they went in at. And be as flat as a piece of paper.
Try neilson slugs I've had them not exit a dove on multiple occasions. Their metal mixture I found is great for not over penetrating
So a bird is 1-1/2 to 3 inches thick which means pretty much every pellet is going to be a pass-through and from my testing expansion (tested in gel) doesn't really start showing until about 1-1/2" anyway so of course expansion stops when the pellet exits... So just about every pellet acts very similar in my experience and trick ones don't do better. Note that i didnt experiment with lower velocity, i tuned for best accuracy and for me that chronyed at 880 so all the birds 'blow up' pretty much whatever HP is used on them (excluding domes). Honestly, guys saying that for example the Hades gave better expansion, i just didnt see it in my real world vs other trick noses. None stood out as more 'explosive' and so i have to believe most reports are unconscious bias or sales hype. Now on larger targets (longer penetration distance) like squirrels or rabbits, i do see differences between pellets.
I agree. My experience has shown me the following. I first started out with JSB exacts and noticed I was putting holes in the barn siding whether I was 20 yds or 60 yds from my target. Not good. With the Baracuda Hunters it does not matter if I am 20 yds or further away, there are no more holes in the barns. So they must be expanding and putting the bulk of their energy into the bird before exiting. Slowing down enough to not punch holes in the barns. With the Hades and Hunter Extremes, there was still a very loud whack of the pellet hitting the sides of the barn. A clear signal things were not slowing down as expected. If you watch videos from Air Rifle Activities, he uses the extremes and you can see all the damage those pellets do after they leave the bird. Not good.
PLEASE do the same test withe slugs... regards
He mentioned he's trying to NOT punch holes in the barn. So slugs tend to punch holes more than pellets so why would he test something known to be worse?
Very nice 👌 Thanks for sharing 👍
👍👍🙂🙂
I did all this research years ago with these expensive and so called expanding pellets, in a sub 12ftlbs AA S410. Most were found to be inaccurate beyond 25yds on rat sized heads. So I searched and found a wonderful pellet called Gambo Expander Counthy. This pellet has a point with a rim that expands, and weigh's in at 15.4grns. These are devastating on rats with out the smack of true hollow points. Enabling you to get several before they know what is going on. I don't know what they will be like at higher velocities, but wiil certainly penertrate tough skin like squillels
I could not find those listed as available here in the States. We have a Tomahawk one that looks similar to the Expander. That looks very lethal for sure!
A sharp pocket knife is a wonderful thing. I’m surprised the Hades pellets didn’t expand more. The Hades that I recovered after penetrating a sparrow or starling are expanded more. Most don’t exit a ground squirrel.
Interesting. Maybe because of the bones it might hit on the way thru?
I was surprised how the baracuda hunter extremes dumped all their energy on impact . I was using domed pellets and they would pass all the way through a rabbit. Switched up to hunter extremes and most of the time wouldn't go through a ground squirrel. Noticeably louder thump on impact too.
Probably.
Cracking content pal
Thanks! ☺☺
Man that tore it up!
The Cuda Hunter's make a large hole for sure.

Pyramid air, top airgun, or one of their many other dealers in the usa.
WOW what an infestation
Man looks like you have the perfect tool for the job with that setup ull rid those starlings in no time
I'm a bit late to the final party, sry about that. It's a shame you laid up, I've been recommending you in comments on the big channels. Blasting the pigeons, sparrows and starlings in-doors is well and good, incredibly effective and I'm surprised nobody else caught on. As for catching new subscribers.. Connoisseurs such as us already subscribed need no further gimmicks. However, when it goes for making it mainstream, most people subscribe for entertainment, and it pains me to say it this way but you're not really making a video so much as, in the words of Clint Eastwood "just letting the cam roll and let'er rip". Your intro/outro logo's are, again saddens and pains me to say, actually so bad that you might as well do without, on top of poor microphone quality. I gotta watch these vids at pretty loud volume to catch what you're saying. Especially the outro, which is honestly my main complaint about the current format, I still only barely catch you slur something about the last bird for the day, only just see a blur for an outro whizz by like lightning and you go "ok bye" and I'm here like "wh.." boom, video done. Just waaay too abrupt! And then there's the scopecam footage quality from that Pard, which leaves a good bit to be desired. Meaning, I can well see what's going on, I don't mind, I get why you use it and it's A-ok for me. BUT for a larger audience who don't catch the nuances of every dispatch you make.. it's subpar. The major bags you get is great, #1 thing people complain about on larger channels is they don't get enough birds on scope cam. You're onto something, I think you can get a solid lock on that niche. I'm a fan, but even I can't make a solid defense for video quality. People have come to expect at least a half-decent intro, quality optic camera (unless in the dark, the Pard gets a pass), a bit of doco-style before you start the session,, maybe some drone footage over the farm (you visit how many farms, 7? So one flight over each for every season, that's what, 28 intro scenes you can re-use for YEARS). Which isn't to state that what you're doing is bad, like I said I'm a-ok with what you had going on, your aim is top notch, enormous bag numbers, it speaks to the quality of your skill and gear when you can empty a tin in an evening, again and again and again. For catching any traction you need to put a good bit more effort into the actual video making. Compare your channel to something like Air Rifle Activities for instance, which is a good comparison because it's ideally where you should have been by now, what does he have that you don't? Can you do at least as much, and add some extra with minimal effort? Of course you can, if you REALLY want it, if you don't wanna do it then you don't really want it = You've come as far as you want, right? 😊 Either way I've watched every video you made and commented on more than one of them. It's been a blast, staying subscribed in case you do decide to come back, have a good one!
Thanks for your feedback and criticism. I totally agree with your comments. I did this to put out content that had shooting and not talk, as you state. I did it just to see if I could do it and how many people would like it. I am not willing to invest more money into something that is only a hobby for me. Regarding the Pard, I think it give me much clearer video than other larger ones. AirTac videos are almost always out of focus. The Pard keeps things clear and is good even in low light in the barn. So, I still like how it records. Appreciate you giving me plugs on other channels postings - thanks for that. God Bless and thanks again.
@@midwestairgunner8500 Didn't mean to solely criticize something I was receiving for free (your videos). Your commentary, top notch and leaves me outta breath on more than one occasion, and your interaction with viewers is great too! I wouldn't ask you to pay more for something you didn't deem worth any more effort you already put in (and let's be clear here, it was plenty effort). With the lighting you seem to get I think a sideshot setup would be worth your time on a longer range airgun at the barn entry for whenever you take long range shots outside, it might be the ticket for some quick variety in one and the same video. And come to think of it, you're spot on about the Pard, at least it's consistent, maybe it's not 2000000fps but we can clearly see what's going on. As for Roelff's videos, he does seem to struggle with quality scope footage, especially in his last video. The caveat of the continent he lives in I guess. Like I said it's a bummer your channel never caught on, I guess it's a saturated niche overall, but the way you consistently achieve these incredible results is just completely different from other channels. I'll never stop referring to your content, it's always going to be relevant for this type of stuff! I do hope you pop in with a little montage once and again, for the science of it if nothing else😊
Hey man how you doing, what do you mean by last video 😢 i just saw that comment on the discretion area passed by to see if you have uploaded anything new that i have missed , take care and have a great day

Just for info: here in Germany by law the dealer has to deal with it incl. shipping it elsewhere and costs. Warranty of 2 years by law. VAT always included by law. But - and that´s a big but - legal limit of 7,5 joule für free to own airguns.
Thanks very much for that.
What state are you lowering the starling population ?
Ohio
You could use a narrower suppressor.
I purchased the Tanto from Donny FL and that fits with no issue.
Asshole dont kill them. Fucking murderer
You are probably the best advertiser for FX in the US. Those things are accurate.
Some of the shots I make with the guns still have me shaking my head in amazement. All from an un-rifled barrel.
Well, that gun makes my old Beeman R5 look very outdated (which it is). Nice shooting, what was the average distance of those shots?
20-30 yards are the bulk of the shots.
A few screech owl and barn owl boxes will help keep the number of starlings way down.
Your in a blind right? I go through a lot of pellets but I need to set up a blind. I also want to make a bug zapper for the pest birds with a little more ZAP....just stand in the kitchen and flick a switch lol I make my own suet cakes and have a great recipe and production method ....and yes they will finish a cake in a few hours if you let um! Great video!
Not in a blind. In the house by the doorwall. Just open the sliding door and pick them off. The suet cakes are 20 yards away from the house.
Hi there. I don't know if you're still around but here goes. I use Terminators for all my pest control and if you think they're good in .177, try them in .22, more devastating than Hades. They're not called Terminators for nothing. All the best from the UK. 👍
Yes. I tried the .22’s in my Maverick and they shot terrible.
This makes me so happy. These birds have completely destroyed my garden and every year it gets worse. Thanks to Eugene Schieffelin for this plague.
Great work! Thank you.
the sound of pelleting firing is so comical lol. I would replace the firing sound with a sound of a rifle or something for dramatic effect
I feel bad laughing at this
would love if some how you could show us the range on each shot. It's crazy how the pellet reaches the target so fast that I'm wondering if you are close to them. another channel he has to adjust for wind and distance, but you seem to hit whatever is in the x part. thanks for the video
Between 20-30 on most of them, one or two 10-15's, the ones outside are about 40, you can tell by the trajectory of his 550fps .177 and 750fps .22 tunes, very similar trajectory between the two and 20-30 yards is pretty flat but 40 starts to drop a little.
is it possible to have automatic reload?
Sadly, no.
@@midwestairgunner8500 :( . crazy how you are not over 100k sub as of yet. I find it fascinating your shooting. Thankyou. and you got a sub
gg
We have tried everything we can to keep blackbirds and starlings off of the suet but nothing works. Except for what you do but my neighbors would report us.
They are so frustrating....
I think I will not load the suet feeder until the blackbirds leave in September. Good riddance.
Sir great video I enjoyed keep going you shoot.excellent
Jeez crazy, back in the UK the retailer (Pyramidair in your case) is liable under the sale of goods actually, and in your situation I would expect them to replace completely within 30 days or repair within 12 months all at their expense
Sir you are a good.marksman thanks for showing us your skill keep up good work
