Renovating a 100 year old home - Getting Permits (EP.7)
This week we submitted drawings for permits, tore up old tile from the vestibule, and uncovered more termite damage. The fun never ends.
The thumbnail image of the video is not my house, rather it is a photo that I created as part of a series in 2021 called "Rowhomes" that documents the character of 100 old homes across Philadelphia. See all the photos below.

In Philly most of the time they do not! Often they are tied into the shared party wall. One of my chimneys is that way, the other is free standing

I love these "slice of life" sections! So interesting that you kinda mix a home reno with installing a window here or a haircut there or an exhibition installation there. It's so different that most channels that JUST focus on the house; most never even touch architectural drafts or revisions too.

If past me could give future me a message about the framing in my hovel, it'd 100% include where the beams are etc. Would it be worth going for the odd framing, but then having it unambiguously stencilled on the floor for all posterity where everything is? Need to find where something is? Pull the carpet back three inches.

Looking at the damage of floors and the one wall, replace the wall and floors. Time is the most expensive part of that section. Even with you doing it. I know you wanted to keep the old radiators and pipes, but it is not worth the time and cost to save them. You are not demolishing the hole center, so you will not be a 1/4 of the hole structure. As well at it is replacement of termite damage.

Hi mate, watching all the way from the UK, I live in a House built in 1885 and we have walls made of Plaster and Horse hair in it, we used reclaimed doors and Running boards from other properties to keep it looking good, our doors are from a Local Pub and are older then the house, around 150 years old, Im sure you can Reclaim some floorboards and other parts from houses surrounding your area if they're demolished or renovated, good luck with the renovation, im currently doing one of our bedrooms and refitting the kitchen soon, our house has been within our family since 1984 and was previously owned by my Great great uncle in the early 1900's

you should add that getting a permit is not soo scary. its a case by case situation. the city needs to record the change of the property in their records so its good to get a permit. also if you the homeowner versus the contractor get the permit there is a difference in cost. there are 50 states and 5 territories that have people living on them. get friendly with your building dept and code enforcement before taking on a reno like this.

There's one wall in my house I'm very afraid of opening because I just know there are 2x4s that are completely eaten. Might have to remove that anyway because it has a bunch of adhesive that can't be scraped off. Regardless, keep up the great work!
