I'm so glad I came across your videos. I'm 4 weeks post op today. Got the stitches removed yesterday & I'm in a boot with wedges. I'm still nervous about walking with the boot in 3 more weeks, but your content has given me some hope. Going to find some exercised to do to help me prepare as well as getting a protein supplement.
Thx a lot, you helped me a lot with my achillies rupture surgery recovery,.. greetings from Slovenia.
How are you Chi ? I had another surgery on my left ankle same as you. I was thinking about you and started watching your videos all over again 😊❤
Brother, after how many days of the Achilles tendon surgery you shot this video ??
I’m 4 months 2 weeks into this. I still have a ton of swelling after wearing my shoes all day. Still have a noticeable limp as well. Ehhh
Thanks for such an informative video! I feel so much more comfortable hearing this info from someone who has lived it…twice!! I’m at week 11, progressing very well as far as I can tell. Walking/hiking a lot, everyday. Naturally getting my rom dorsiflexion back, but will start specific stretches here soon. Heel lifts are still tough. Feel so awkward, weak, and tight deep in the Achilles area. I don’t even attempt single leg calf raises at this point. Some folks have reported re-rupture from attempting single leg, maybe too early. I’m gonna try to just keep at it, as much as my body feels is healthy, and hope that the strength comes back and the tightness and awkwardness subsides. I think I really need to come to grips that certain things are only going to happen with TIME!!😊. Thanks again for the great videos!
when were you able to do a single heel raise after injury ? on the bad foot
Yes, although it took some time to build the strength back to do an unassisted single heel raise but you'll definitely gain that strength back and eventually progress to single heel raise but on a platform to get even more range of motion.
Had surgery beginning of july for a chronic Achilles tendon rupture. They performed a FHL transfer. I'm now at 3 months and I'm walking without the boot indoors and doing some strength exercises supervised by my physio. I'm 56 years old this type of injury is a nightmare especially if you're an old fart like me however my progress is good and my consultant seems to think the boot can be dispensed with completely in 2 weeks. Your videos have been very informative and given me hope that eventually I'll get the ankle back to almost what is was before the injury. Just gonna take time. Again thanks for the videos
You're very welcome and it sounds like you have the right attitude. Knowing it will take some time to get back to your usual form allows you to handle this journey of recovery with patience and a positive mind. I hope your recovery goes smoothly and let me know if you have any questions.
Many mentions of early mobilization and weight bearing being key to low re rupture rates. Aren’t those two counter to each other? How can you do weight bearing and mobilization at the same time?
Now I'll preface that I'm not a doctor and this is really a great question. From my understanding, early mobilization and weight-bearing are actually complementary in the context of Achilles tendon rehabilitation. The key is gradual progression, starting with controlled mobilization exercises (e.g., range of motion activities) and partial weight-bearing, then gradually increasing the load as the tendon heals. I believe this approach can improve recovery outcomes and lower re-rupture rates because it encourages the tendon to adapt to stress and heal more robustly. The flip side is that you don't stress your tendons enough as it heals and the leg muscles around the achilles atrophies further which leads to increased recovery times and potential reruptures.
Hi chi, love your video of a 69-year-old basketball player the ruptured my Achilles in a non-basketball environment eruption my Achilles walking on an uneven surface. My surgery is next week, but I already have the scooter and I will heat your advice about a shower. fortunately for me, I do have a wife that’s been very gracious with my recovery so far thanks again. Good luck and God bless you, Dr. Mike.
Thanks for sharing Dr. Mike and I hope you have a speedy recovery! Sounds like you have an amazing wife to take care of you during this process. Having support during this recovery process is so helpful especially at the beginning when you can't walk.
Hey man, your T shirt should say Ruptors, not Raptors lol, Just kidding, thanks for sharing
Haha that would be great t-shirt!
I just ruptured my Achilles 9/19/24 playing pickup, and just had surgery on 9/26/24. I would never want to pick up a basketball again. The fact that you ruptured your other Achilles playing basketball again crazy.
Haha yeah it was definitely a risky decision. Although having the goal to play again really helped me during the recovery and physio process and gave me a reason to stay motivated and disciplined throughout the journey.
Surgery is speed bridge...
I agree and partly why I opted for surgery!
Appreciate the video
You're very welcome!
Hey man, I really can't thank you enough for this series. I ruptured my achilles a little over a week ago and have surgery in 2 days on Wednesday. I ruptured it doing gymnastics for fun, but I'm a dancer and I'm pretty devastated. It's wildly helpful to see others going through this that have recovered. My morning routine is also always watching dance videos on youtube and that feels kinda depressing right now so I've switched to these videos which has helped a ton. SO grateful. Any encouraging words about the surgery would be helpful. I've never had one and am very nervous.
You're very welcome. I hope your surgery went well and you're recovering now. The key to the whole process is patience, with yourself, with your body, and let the natural healing process happen. Get lots of sleep and stay on a good healthy diet thats not too inflammatory (processed foods etc). Take it from someone who has recovered from two tears and surgeries that "this too shall pass" and you'll be able to look back and see it just as a memory in the future.
Thanks for the tips and your insights, very helpfull Bro..! Patience is really the key. Its gonna be 1 week tomorrow for me since the surgery. Full rupture playing badminton. Had exactly the same feeling; someone kicking me back on my leg! Stay strong everybody! 💪
You're very welcome and you're absolutely right that patience is the key! I hope you have a speedy recovery and let me know if you have any questions.
why did you have surgery ? just curious
I read the literature and it seemed like surgery would repair my achilles and give it less chance of rerupturing again in the future as I planned to return to sports. Another reason was that the recovery process is faster with surgery but it does come with the negatives which is any complications during surgery.
@@ChiChen3ahh I see! and how long did your full recovery take as well as being able to do a single calf raise on your injured foot?
@@ChrisChoulagh It took about 7-8 months before I was doing single leg calf raises for sets, about 1 year for pretty much full recovery and 1.5 years for full recovery to play sports.
Had surgery on July 31, start weight bearing on Wednesday the 11th (6 week post op appointment). It’s been a grind man!!!! Appreciate the videos
You're very welcome and it definitely is a grind. Let me know if you have any questions and I hope you have a speedy recovery.
@@ChiChen3 week 12 I believe now… in shoes… doing a lot of self PT. The actual PT sessions are kind of a joke unfortunately where I was going so you’re videos have been very helpful
I’m at week four post op…down to one wedge in the boot, pretty much walking and weight bearing now with the boot, no crutches. This morning I put a half inch heel lift in my running shoes and was able to walk …slowly, carefully, and with little or no dorsiflexion, but it felt great! No pain or swelling. I’m due to remove last wedge in a week and scheduled to see my surgeon in two weeks. Not sure if I will walk into the office in the boot or the running shoes😮. I’m hoping he’s ok with my progression. Everything feels and seems great. I just need to start physio and strengthening and re-building. It’s gonna be a long haul, but I’m determined to get back at it. Gotta stay patient and be careful, though, I know. Thanks for the videos!👍
You're very welcome and it sounds like your recovery is coming along really well! Great work and keep up that positive attitude and all of this will be behind you in no time.
@@ChiChen3thanks so much! I’m walking and hiking now every day pretty well now at week 10, doing exercises like heel raises, leg press, resistance bands, etc. still a very tight, awkward feeling in the tendon when I do calf raises, and not able at all to do single leg calf raises. Just hoping my tendon continues to strengthen over time and I am eventually able to do single leg calf raises, walk on my toes, go down stairs normally, etc. Has your tendon regained full strength by now? Thanks again!👍
@@TheArtisticGardener777 Yes absolutely, your tendon will continue to strengthen and also gain its flexibility back at roughly the same pace. You'll definitely be able to do single leg calf raises and all that as you recover. My Achilles has almost fully regained its strength. I'd say it takes about 1.5 years to reach around 90-95% recovery. I'm at the 3 year mark now and it's still around 95%, while it may never get back to 100%, the difference isn't noticeable.
@@ChiChen3awesome!👍. Thanks again!💪
I am on month 7 and it gets sore quick after working out.
Yeah this is totally normal and just keep at it (without injury) and it'll get stronger and stronger.
Omgg thanks for describing the moment of the incident I felt the same way and I’m trying to figure out how this happened and couldn’t put 2 and 2 together this happened to me playing tennis 2 days ago. Thanks for the explanation
You're welcome and yeah many of us had the same feeling after a tear. Really weird feeling to look behind you and realize nobody is there and yet you clearly felt like something hit your leg.
Toronto waterfront resident here, too! Looks like you also play by the bball courts at Billy Bishop. Tore my achiles 1 week ago and awaiting surgery at Mt. Sainai. Your videos are so informative and encouraging for me to know what to look forward to. Thanks brother! I hope you're doing well.
You're very welcome! Yeah I'm fully healed now and I mostly play at the indoor courts beside the outdoor ones at the Waterfront Community Centre by Billy Bishop. I hope you have your surgery scheduled or completed already and your recovery is coming along well! Let me know if you have any questions.
Just want to express my gratitude to Chi’s great videos and kindness to share. I am at the end of Month 5 now. Definitely appreciate the fact that I did not re-rupture by following the advice here and not rushing for progress. Plan to work on jogging to build stamina step by step
You're very welcome! Sounds like your recovery is coming along nicely!
just want to say thank you im on my 5th month back to work still limp esp.in the morning cant wait to play basketball again
Ah sounds like your recovery is going smoothly! Yeah the stiffness in the mornings is real and it tends to loosen up as you warm up your leg throughout the day. Take your time and keep up your exercises and you'll be playing basketball again in no time.
thank you Chi! These videos have been really helpful!
You're very welcome!
Thank you. I'm in week 11.. have my have raisers on my shoe. Not sure when they come off.
You're welcome and I hope your recovery is going well. I removed most of my heel lifts around Month 3 I believe? But I'd follow the protocol by your doctor on when to remove your heel raisers. I was removing them once per week I believe after my wound healed.
Thanks a lot for doing these videos. I'm at about 6 1/2 weeks post-surgery. The recovery seems to be going well so far (can just about hobble along without the boot now) but it's a long and slow process. Watching these kinds of videos helps when I'm feeling a bit less positive about the injury. All the best to you
You're very welcome! I hope your recovery is coming along well. Be patient with yourself and feel reassured that with time, this will all be a memory in the past.
No PT?
I had PT for the first few months but then afterwards I just did the exercises on my own at home since I knew what to do from doing PT throughout my first surgery.
I guess I'm gonna need some flats... Vans Im in week 6
I hope your recovery is coming along well! Let me know if you have any questions.
Achilles rupture team unite! Three weeks post snap, had surgery, trying to keep my chin up. Thanks for the post
You're welcome and I hope your surgery and recovery is coming along well! Let me know if you have any questions as you go through your recovery.
Felt like someone through a boulder on the back of my ankle and I immediately looked back like what the heck …
Yeah exactly the same feeling, was very weird to look back and see nothing there yet I noticeably felt like something hit my leg.
Not sure why this popped up but I just had a grade 3 rupture last Sunday …casted and off the foot for 6 weeks …horrible compared to my broken back! 😂
Haha, yeah achilles injuries is one of the worst but I hope your recovery is coming along well!
Thanks for the video, really helpfull and reassuring to know what rehab looks like. I'm 12 weeks post op and i can walk with a limp. I feel like i lack dorsiflexion (when the foot/toes go up), when did that come back during your rehab ?
You're welcome! Hm.. my dorsiflexion was a gradual process and continued all the way through to Month 8-9. I found that the flexibility is unlocked as you recover and gain strength through the entire chain from your foot, to ankle and up. It'll come gradually as you heal and strengthen.
Very helpful bro….just had surgery and started my recovery process
Thank you! I hope your recovery is going well and let me know if you have any questions.
Chi, I truly appreciate all your videos on your Achilles rehabilitation. I am on week 3 and your insight has been great value. Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words, I hope your recovery is coming along well and let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks for this man. Just tore mine couple weeks ago. Having surgery in 2 days 😫
I’m 4 weeks post op tomorrow. Hope it’s going well for you. I’m starting to walk around without the crutches around the house.
@@stevedeibler2181 i just made 4 weeks post op a couple days ago. doing pretty good. I was in a boot and walking around with some weight on it 11 days after my surgery. i’m not really using the crutches anymore just bc they’re so annoying to deal with. i use my knee scooter a good bit though. I started taking collagen pills and bpc 157 this past week
Hope your surgery went well and your recovery is going smoothly!
The flap under your toes is supposed to go over your toes.
Yeah you're right, I think I had it under just for around the house so it didn't overheat my foot so much.
I have a tub chair and a knee roller. That's how I get in and out of tub/shower with no boot. I just came off of my third surgery. Complete ankle replacement and tendon surgery.
Oh my, your third surgery? I hope your recovery is coming along well. I've done two already and cant imagine having to do another one.
Tore mine on July 6th stepping off a downed tree while cycling. Full rupture, surgery on Wednesday. Not looking forward to the long rehab, but it’s just another thing to overcome. Thanks for the tips! Great advice.
You're welcome and I hope your recovery is coming along well.
@@ChiChen3 Recovery is going well. Started some agility work in rehab this week. Did a nice 3.5 mile hike Monday and have been able to get back on the bicycle too. I’ve seen a lot of improvement the last 4 weeks! Thanks
@@stevedeibler2181 Oh it definitely sounds like your recovery is going great! I'm confident this will all be a distant memory for you in no time. I barely ever think about or remember that I've torn both achilles at this point, even when I'm playing sports.
I have insertional achile tendon and surgery with anchor or screw metal that had bonded the tendon and heel bone know I am at week 8 post surgery, I can walk 🚶♀️ with limping , also I so feeling when I have taken steps forward from the injured 🦵 at the surgery point what advice???
I'd follow your doctors protocol but feel free to watch these videos to see my healing journey and process and let me know if you have any specific questions I can help with.
Im on week 4 atm I hit week 5 Wednesday and I still cannot walk without the crutches. I seen your excersise on here. I’m going to try. It’s tough I’m scared to put to much weight on it
Sorry for the late reply, it's okay to take your time and let pain be your guide. You're probably past this stage now but let me know if you have any other questions and I'll try to reply much faster this time.
Just had surgery on July 3rd. I'm in pain right now. Feels more like nerve pain. 8/10. I had to have a bone spur removed and repair of the tendon. I'm in an aircast with bandages. Next, I will be in a cast for 4 weeks, and then the boot for 6 weeks. I have to undergo the same surgery on my left side as well. Thanks for the video.
Ah yeah the first couple of months is the hardest as you have to deal with the pain of the wound from surgery. I hope the worst is behind you now and you can slowly focus on stretching and strengthening.
Thanks for sharing 😊
You're very welcome!
Damm it happened to you twice as well
Yeah it was definitely a mental battle the second time around but making this video series helped as I found a bit of purpose to my suffering.
Bro lucky you, they botched up my leg bc my cut looks horrible. I’m at week 4 rn but they told me I won’t be able to walk fully think week 10
Hey man, I hope your recovery is coming along well. Yeah my first surgery on my left leg looks much worse as they did the old surgical method.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful tips and insight.
You're very welcome Antonio!
Chi, thank you for your insight, very helpful. Your tips will help me a great deal. My surgery is tomorrow. I am older, but very active. I ruptured my doing circuit training, at the gym. Thanks!
You're very welcome and I hope your surgery and recovery is coming along nicely. Let me know if you have any questions.
Have you had any experience with using peptides for healing your Achilles?
No unfortunately I don't have any experience with that.
It has been a year and a month now since my surgery. I've been running on the treadmill. It's pretty safe to say that I can run to 8 on a treadmill but I can actually max it out before the surgery. Here's the thing, even though I can run on a treadmill, I could only run straight and I have to run a pavement like I'm running on a treadmill. I also play basketball, but it seems like I couldn't run appropriately to do a layup. If it's only two steps away from the basket, I can do the two step run and do the layup. But if I'm starting to drive all the way from the three point line, I can't do it. It feels like I lost that dip and explode to drive to the basket. I played basketball against an actual person few days ago. I couldn't drive. I don't know what training I should do to get back what I lost.
Hey man, thanks for sharing and I definitely know the feeling you're describing. The explosiveness will take a bit more time before it comes back. Your game will have to evolve a bit to rely less on explosive speed and more from taking the right angles and using your body. Look at how slow Luka is but he manages to cross and drive on people all the time. Now this doesn't mean you won't get your explosive D.Rose playstyle back again, but that usually comes back around 1.5 year mark and by 2 year mark you'll feel like your back 100%. This is assuming you keep up with your stretching and strengthening exercises.
You can drive with your left foot. I suggest practicing in an empty lot but it can bw done. I live in LA and am currently driving left footed on freeways. Youll be ok ...
It may be illegal to do that. But I’d do it too if I didn’t have a manual.😊
@stevedeibler2181 it is not illegal indy state ... check your states laws
@@916vkidd it is in Pennsylvania.
I never tried to drive with my left foot, I think it's definitely doable and just a little learning curve but this tear happened during COVID lockdowns so I had nowhere to go anyways.
