    Apparently it did pretty good numbers and critically for a bunch of award nominations so it was renewed for 2 more seasons. Which is fairy rare for Netflix to renew something for 2 more seasons at once and they said the third will probably have a few extra episodes. I'm not sure i really had no issue with the dialogue in fact it improved at times for me compared to the books which i thought a lot of characters talked very robotic and in the show they actually spoke like a group of friends who know each other. To me i thought i totally bought Ye decision in the show. Also the chinese rights holders specifically asked for a mostly western version of the show for a western audience. I listened to an interview with the creators and it was pretty interesting they said that Netflix was very concerned that the first season wouldn't do big numbers and that they spent a ton of money on the rights to these books and the first season that they tried to appeal the first seasons to as many people as they could but they said they were relieved it was renewed and they get to tell the whole story and they don't have to worry as much about mass appeal now for these next seasons since it's guaranteed they get to finish it now. Just seemed interesting

    I agree with Stephen too many plot lines and I think the Numenoreans suffered a lot from this.

  • @GentleGiantJason
    @GentleGiantJason 7 дней назад

    I love Ben’s perspective. He makes a good point that none nerd fans are going to have no idea about Numenor. There was a vision in season one that gives a hint about what’s going to happen on the island but most won’t remember it and probably don’t know what it means. And the casual watcher won’t know about what Numenor does on the continent.

  • @GentleGiantJason
    @GentleGiantJason 7 дней назад

    The show had two boring plot lines: Stranger/Harfoots and Numenor. In the first plot what really happened? Gandalf got his name and a staff, Nori and Poppy found some friends. That’s it. What a waste of time. Numenor suffers from season one. There was no point for them to go to Mordor in season one if in season two they are just going to stay on their isle. What happened? In something similar to Monty Pythons women in ponds distributing sword - Ar Pharazon is elected by an eagle and immediately becomes an evil dictator suppressing everyone.

    Watching the review now but I'll say my thoughts on the season were it was an improvement on season 1. I would give season 1 a 6 or 6.5 out of 10 and season 2 a 7 out of 10.

      Celebrimbor was the highlight of the season to me and that actor acted his ass off, lol

    The Sauron from episode one was off. Sauron is an evil manipulator. While that opening sequence was fun to watch but Sauron wouldn’t be that weak. And I didn’t really care for the season one retcon attempt at the end of that sequence.

    I love that one of his influences on the new series is Shadow Run. Also, I did like Caldera, from the Alex Verus series quite a bit. She's a really critical foil to Alex Verus as someone who also see a lot of brokenness in the system but tries to resolve it through legal means. She's interesting because in one way, she makes the series lighter: she reminds you that Alex Verus and friends aren't the only good people in the world (Landis is fantastic, but not very developed, Chalice even less so). On the other hand, the effect of her loyalty to a corrupt system has horrify results. Great character.

    My take? And this is very much colored by my strong feelings about what I'd like to happen, lol: Deadlegs is A Norrigal, not Kinch's Norrigal. Perhaps I missed it, but I saw nothing in Deadlegs' interactiosn with Kinch that made me think she knew him well, much less had a tryst with him years ago. My take is Deadlegs is a succession of magical copies, each training the next generation of Norrigal to become an even stronger Deadlegs, which is partially why she is so powerful. Each Norrigal follows similar paths on life, i.e. they all get their legs broken, and maybe they each have similar experiences beyond that, as part of the spell that brings about a new Deadlegs, but its not a timeloop. Anyways, I hope this is the case and in the end Kinch returns and convinces his Norrigal to not continue the cycle. Just my 2 cents.

  • @GentleGiantJason

    There seems to be no story this season. We have Sauron making the rings. That seems to be A plot. But there’s no B plot. The stranger is just wondering around having D&D adventures. Arandir and team are just wondering around having D&D adventures. And Numenor has an overthrow that has both to do with their attempt to save the Southland in season one, totally ignoring what happened in season one other than an excuse to dispose the queen. Just range fanboy fanfict. “We need ents, we could have barrow wraiths, I’m so mad we never got Tom B let’s add him “

  • @GentleGiantJason
    @GentleGiantJason Месяц назад

    Season two is better than season one with regard to the writing. However the abysmal writing of season one has only improved to the level of bad fan fiction. Episode is all fan fiction. Tom B, Barrow Wraiths, Ents, mud snake, etc.

    I'm going to be honest. I read the entirety of First Binding book. It is truly a flat out rip off of KKC. Like literally word for word nearly. It infuriated me. Look. The prose is not god awful, but it's not near as poetic, beautiful, or flowery. I will give him one thing. The world building was pretty good, and the different places did have some uniqueness to it. But everything. The main protagonist, the silence, from poor boy to legend, tells his life story in a tavern or inn, the main villains, belief system, a magic school, even a magic system, same teachers, same plot, same girl, same mentor, same family life style, same street urchin, same struggling with money. Literally it's South Asia\Middle Eastern KKC. The fact that there is no acknowledgement to Rothfuss for this novel is insane. Which tells me he basically was like: "Okay I'm obsessed with the KKC, so how can I write a fantasy series, where it's the same story, but slightly different?" Boom. The first binding. The author not acknowledging Rothfuss at all in his book, in an author's note, or anything tells me he pretty much fully copied it and changed names a little bit. Just to be a tad different but it's way to on the nose. It's one thing to take inspiration from other works, but it's another to flat out steal someone's entire story and not even make an effort to create and write something original or new. His writing is not that good. It's borderline plagiarism to me. I am also an author. I mostly write historical fiction but I have written a fantasy book set in a medieval time period. If someone had done what the First Binding did to one of my books, I would be pissed. He's lucky because he slightly skirts under the plagiarism laws, but he's damn close. Dude should be sued. It's shameful. He just reads other author's work that is clearly at a higher level than he is. Then he just copies and pastes with a few differences and odd nuances. His Grave series is basically Jim Butcher's Dresden Files. Other things are Lockamora. Now it's KKC. It's pretty shameful. Doesn't matter if he is trying to pass it off as a "homage" to KKC. It's stealing someone's story and idea. The frame story, some of the magic in KKC is not new, but Rothfuss did put his own twist on it. The First Binding is just a rip off.

    When I saw Martha Wells at Minicon, in the Q&A iirc she said she writes MurderBot stories when she has an idea she wants to write about. I got the impression she doesn’t really have a series mapped out and doesn’t plan for it to specifically go somewhere. It seems like her writing process is organic and evolves as she writes.

    As strong as the Cruciform tale was, this is where i immediately felt my interest in the story slipping. The soldier's tale, in my opinion, is so terribly cheesy and dated. It screams 80s Heavy Metal comic vibes. The sex scenes are so unbelievably cringe to read. It's like a D&D fan that never talked to girls wrote this fantasy. It literally ruined the book for me lol. Then there's the Weintraub connection that makes it even worse imo. I realize that I'm not being particularly kind here but I must express this is simply my feelings for the story. If you enjoyed it, by all means, laugh at me and tell me I'm wrong. I recognize I'm probably in the minority here as this issue never comes up when the book is praised.

    Ulciscor also has a mark on his arm because he was always pulling down the sleeve on his left arm thru out the book. Doctors want to sample Vis's blood straight away to make sure he was not from another Realm. Letting you know that blood changes once you have made it thru the labyrinth. Callidus was my favorite character. He knows his Dad is being pressured due to foul play. Once the realm conquered every faction, it tried to synchronize and split?

    Was a set-up book, was a bit short for my tastes. Liked Alex Verus series, so yeah I liked this first book, still good storytelling. Good point in needing a better secondary character to bounce off of, instead just the cat. Was bit of cliffhanger ending, where it would been nice for the next book to come out closer, but Jacka seems to have pretty consistent releasing 1 new book per year, which is appreciated.

    Ulciscor blew that anguis' head by throwing an imbued rock at him, same way Emissa imbued the dagger to push Vis out of the tower. I think will usage is something literal, you imbue objects with your will so they move as your willpower commands it giving inanimate objects some "life" with your want. They make themselves stronger by imbuing themselves with others' willpower, there's a section where Ulciscor talks about his stylus being sub-harmonicalt locked to his borther's stylus making them operate at the same time so this is another way to will an inanimate object. They can make them complex enough to operate machinery and saving willpower, I think this is more like using will in obejcts to create some kind of perpetual engine that better uses willpower. Another property of will is "conditional" that means the imbued object is only activated by a condition (the alarms systems, traps, how the stones and medallions work on the iudicium) this resembles how the magic system works in Lev Grosman's The magicians series in which the magic laws have "circumstances" that you have to account for every time you cast a spell like the Altitude, Age, Position of the Pleiades, Phase of the Moon, temperature, humour, position of the sun, moon, direction the caster is facing, dew point etc etc. I think it will get more and more complex in the next book when Vis is forced to go to the columns and start using will.

    What is the synchronism ? I am so confused. Is there a clone ? How did bellie reach the dome? Or why? For the Indicium nobody tan the labyrinth then why were they practicing it? Am I missing something. What does the tainted blood mean?

    • @PedroRodrigues-fh1ku
      @PedroRodrigues-fh1ku 4 месяца назад

      synchronism is when a copy affects the original. Luceum is probably heaven, Obiteum the planet where people are transported when they die in Res (Vis' world) The rending is the cataclysm which was a tear between those realms: the technological society before the cataclysm developed a way of teleportation as a means of space travel, it's a trope in sci-fi for overcoming the problem of faster than light speed space travel. Those arches Vis steps into are the machine that beams their information (body+mind) to another world, the machine in that world rebuilds a copy of their body with a copy of their minds. The cataclysm is hinted to have affected mostly adults, that's why society collapsed, they were left left with only children, cultures and tech forgotten, because probably the rending only affected people who teleported which means adults. Indol is gay, he will probably be the "replacement" for Callidus on the next book, being close friends with Aequa and Vis. Emissa and Ulciscor will probably turn out to be antagonistic to Vis Vis at Res will probably be antagonistic to Vis at Luceum Eidhin didn't want to participate on the ludiceum because it meant playing the hierarchy game of greed, the rules were meant to put friends against friends so that's why he said that to Vis and declined, also because he probably felt it was a circumstance in which he could very easily snap and kill the students. Ps.: I think there's a big plothole in the villa telimus section of the book in which Lanistia says to Vis that the labyrinth is meant to test multiple skills similar to wield will and that even tho the students had never played it outside the academy they had advantage against Vis, because they were already used to wield will and Vis were not, but then later on when Vis is with the class 4 students at the festival and he is attacked, Aequa and their Praeceptor asks why he didn't use Will and he said it was because it was against the rules (rules of the academy that has no hold outside of it) so I think it means that minors can't use will, because they never been to the aurora columnae, no students in the academy can wield will, hence none of them has advantage over Vis on the labyrinth other than time spent there.

It was so well written, every character is so well fleshed out. Till the end of part 2 I was gliding through the book and loving it. @@monisharmuk It was a real page turner. Most of what I said is speculation and theories tho, on the meaning of the labirynth and the cataclysm. If you liked this books you should read red rising. Other sci-fantasy that I think you would enjoy is Hyperion, beautiful prose, incredible lore and characters are very well written and also the plot is very mysterious in the same vein as the will of the many with the ancient technology and dying earth vibes. another one is Children of time, this one is the weirdest sci-fi I've read and has some of the wildest plots and use of tech.

    Why no guards? At least we have a plausible explanation of Criston sleeping on the job, possibly tweaking around with the guards to not be seen. Larys almost certainly moving the guards around. In the book the Tower of the Hand, the residence of the second most important person in Westeros, is never guarded and people keep getting killed. That stretches credibility a lot more. How did Cheese know? They drove home the point how common ratcatchers are in the palace. No one pays them any attention, the royals treat them as wallpaper. So one would assume Cheese has been inside royal quarters & has routinely seen Helaena's odd behavior & nervousness. That's how he knew she's incapable of being duplicitous. What's missing from fans is the ability to imagine characters as fully formed ppl with experiences & interiority, & then extrapolate meaning from that. How will they justify criston as kingsguard? It's simple. We saw clips of Aegon being absolutely enraged. He will lose common. He will go "spill blood not ink". All his hatred with be geared towards Otto. So he will naturally gravitate towards Larys, who will slyly tell him to remove Otto and put Cole in charge. So he can blackmail Alicent via her relationship with Cole. The show already planted the seeds of that in the first episode When Larys warned him to not be "pliable" under his grandad's thumb. Aegon won't be the first king to make a self-destructive impulsive decision out of pure rage.

    Show B&C makes more sense. Aemond killed Luke. Why would Rhaenyra want to kill an innocent child instead of the person who killed her son. I'm glad changes were made.

    This was really the only book so far I've felt was a slog. There were parts of other books that were slow, but this entire book was meh

    I really tried getting into this series. I like the Canterbury Tales format used but that's about it. Maybe it's a bit dated for my tastes, but i fell off after the second book. I barely remember what I read other than thinking "more cruciform stuff, less Barbarella". The tacky sex scenes are just cringey lol

    I liked that Rand at the end of the book started to sound like Lews therin. He finally at dragon mount understood his failure (acknowledge the death Ilyena)and accepted his advise. At the end of the book both Rand and Lews therin stop being so self center .

    I appreciate the recap, and lot, but guys, if I’m allowed a suggestion, try to stick to recapping next time, as you spent more than half the time bouncing between half baked reviewing, random trivia and general going on tangents that made this really hard to listen to for the purposes intended. Honestly, tuis feels like a “drunk history” version of a book summary 😂 - still appreciate the recap!!!

    I think this was explained in the book. I’ll put some carriage returns in case it’s spoiler. Edit I think it’s a spoiler for the next book so I’ll remove this just in case
