That I detest his politics in no way diminishes my respect for what John Milius accomplished with APOCALYPSE NOW. It was a brilliant concept, and there’s no question that many of the best moments in the film originated with him. That said, there’s also no underlying theme or structure without Joseph Conrad, who is referenced frequently in Coppola’s draft revisions and Michael Herr’s narration, both of which thankfully substituted Conrad’s thematic ambition and literacy for Milius’ macho posturing. And the end result of all of these varied perspectives is an extraordinary work, for all its flaws. So why, when it came time to give Joseph Conrad his due, did Milius have to be such a dick about it, fighting with Coppola before the Writer’s Guild to keep Conrad’s name out of the film’s credits? Asserting that “if APOCALYPSE NOW is based on ‘Heart of Darkness’ then ‘Moby Dick’ is based on the Book of Job” may have satisfied John Milius’ need to sound clever, but of course you can’t say that and then go on to pat yourself on the back for succeeding where Orson Welles failed.

while filming the wheat field fire scene a smoke machine went haywire causing injuries. the script supervisor/continuity person had to spend months in hospital using an iron lung to breathe. she never got any credit for the work she had done prior to the incident. given Terrence Malick's reputation for writing dialogue the night before shooting, and filming whatever caught his attention, I'd say the script girl got off easy.

Incidentally, the reason this is so grainy is because, much later, Kubrick had to produce a new negative from his own personal print. As the printing negative wore out, the film lab cut up the original camera negative and spliced it in, thus destroying it.

I really wish they would for once do one of these films... without the narration. Because, yes. The cinematography is exquisite. And the sound in general is perfect. And the editing works so well. But when they add the navel-gazing high school deepity parental issue ridden narration... It ruins every bit of good will I had with the films. And all I want is for it to shut up so I can enjoy the movie. I know narration can be used greatly. But wow. I do not understand what kind of mindset I need to be in to find the banal and trite musings of Malick anything else than tiresome.

I am almost ashamed to admit that, even as a devotee of movies and film making, I didn't discover The Archers until just a few years ago. My first exposure to their genius was "A Matter of Life and Death." Next was "The Red Shoes." After that was "Black Narcissus" followed by everything else of theirs that I could find. These guys were geniuses with unfathomable (to me) talent. "The Red Shoes" just sucks me in whenever I start watching it. The ballet scene makes time stop for me.
