Why I Hate the Allen&Heath SQ Mixer Console
Here are just a few reasons as to why I dislike the Allen&Heath SQ-series of mixers.
This should apply to the SQ-5 SQ-6, and SQ-7.

I don't Understand why it took that long for you to find Dante 45 when Date is an IO card, so obviously you would chose the I.O ports on both tabs? 😂😂I mean, I use it 50 times a year and never spent 54 seconds finding that tab 😂.

what I was trying to demonstrate was, if someone asked "What is on Dante Output 45?" "is it a mixbus?, a direct-out? aux-send? insert-send?" there is no "birds-eye" view to see all the dante outputs at once

Now that I own an SQ5 by myself i see one valid point: The scribble strips are really too small and plain! Yamaha TF or even Behringer consoles show, how it's done.... The other point i see: It's really hard to get an overview over the I/O routing.... BUT: The 'double click view'-feature really helps (shows the I/O of every channel on the channel strip). No perfect solution but very helpful in most cases.

Respectfully, I use the SQ5 and some of the points that you're making are BS or maybe due to a faulty unit. The scenes save everything without the need of a USB drive and recall everything flawlessly, to mention one.

I come from the Soundcraft Ui24R. (if you think you know about that specific model but never got into that specific model, shh. I'm not speaking for the Ui12 or Ui16, or the Si boards.) With Ui24R I can simultaneously multitrack record out to a DAW, including LR and AUX mixes; AND... USB drive record LR mix, and multitrack record for redundant multitrack. I hate the mute setup on the SQ. If a channel is mute grouped, I can't unmute that channel in my aux without unmuting it everywhere else. Also, I can't mute a channel in my aux without muting the channel everywhere else. IF I hit a channel mute button that is actively mute grouped, I doubly mute that channel. I have to unmute the group to activate my channel, then re-mute other channels I don't want. I hate the screen and knob setup interface for processing.. especially EQ. For context, I used the Ui24R with a Dell 27 inch touch monitor and several iPads. On the touch monitor you can see everything all the time. All meters, all send levels on all channels, LABEL ALL MUTE AND VIEW GROUPS... EXRREMELY fast and easy to create any kind of group... (view, DCA, sub, mute, etc.) A processor touch setting page becomes the whole page. I just wish somebody made a mixer that combines the preamps and sound quality of the SQ and the strengths and workflow of the UI24R. I wanted to cascade a second Ui24R unit for 20 additional inputs but the Ui24R still lacks in some areas that a major board that the SQ has.

As an SQ user...... everything you've said is addressed at a higher budget. You DO get what you pay for. But in my biased opinion, on the SQ you get more than what you paid for at this price point compared with the competition. I actually think the biggest floor on the SQ is the amount of parameters that can only be changed on the surface by the single general purpose rotary encoder (which went faulty on my first SQ). But again..... budget.

It has cheap expansion cards, awesome add-on plugins and you can supercharge it with A&H Prime top of the line preamps or just DX168 equipped with D-Live's preamps.

All the "fanboy" comments aside (and I'd love to see the number of downvotes on this video from them); you make some good points. Nearly every digital mixer does the same thing now. It's these subtle differences that can make a console easy/fun to use or difficult/frustrating. While most of these concerns can easily be worked around, it's good to know about them to get an honest idea of how these consoles compare to others.

I love the SQ7 - and most sound engineers that I know love it too, but I appreciate your criticisms and especially agree with your point on the RTA. Still, I have had an amazing time the past few years mixing some large musical theatre productions on this console using the DCA line-by-line technique. Compared to the Studio Live and M/X32s that I have to use more often, the SQ7 has been a bit more intuitive and quicker to program complicated shows on. Still, I'm planning on using the program TheatreMix with the console on the next show so I can spend even less time doing the tedious programming.

0:16 - This is so funny to me now, cause at the church I work at, they have both the Si Performer 3 & the Si Expression 1 from Soundcraft in the Main Auditorium and Hall. Unfortunately the Performer had issues with the faders doing funky things and there were some major routing issues that couldn't be solved (FX routed into itself without anyone doing anything, pretty sure the motherboard is damaged), so that desk was put into storage (they also tried to sell it), while they got an SQ6 to replace the desk (which is working great). Recently the lighting desk died on us, so we brought out the Si Performer to literally just use it as a Lighting desk (which as a sound guy is the funniest thing to me), so now I have both the SQ6 and the Si performer sitting in front of me hahaha.

Soundcraft desks are far behind the era... Everything is purely parametric without effective intuitive visual feedback. No RTA, no gate/compression curves, and the EQ curve is not touch-operated. Although these problems can be partially solved by using Mixing Station or ViSi Remote, it's still a great pain to totally rely on an external device to run the basic functions.

The first Important thing anyone should consider is “what do i want to use my mixing desk for, Studio or Live Sound” if your looking for a studio desk which the pervayor of this video is, then no the SQ or any of the live sound mixers that Allen & Heath produce would all fall short, But if its a Live Sound mixing console your looking for then Allen & heath have a long track record of producing top quality Live Sound desks at a price point to fit your budget. The QU is the budget range for Allen & Heath. The SQ is the start of there professional series desks progressing to the Advantis up to the DLive. The main differences between the desks is the channel count of available channels, the SQ having 48 channels, this is the lowest available channel desk of their professional series. What should be noted here is that all the professional series desks use the same Preamps, and many of the same built in plugins (which lets be fair, the more seasoned professionals now use Waves as their FOH, and Monitor FX engins) so there is little to no difference to signal quality between the SQ, Advantis and DLive. The range of professional desks produces by Allen & Heath, is simply a price point or budgetary requirement that many of the current desk manufactures do. However Allen & Heath approch budgetary and price point in a smart way, that being channel count, as apposed to gadgets, gimmicks, and cheaper versions of preamps, all of which effect signal quality. I have used the Yamaha, and the Midas which both are not intuitive when it come to using the menu systems and you tend to find yourself paging left and right to find what your looking for, and the whole thing is far too converlooted (My Opinion). I have also used the DLive and Advantis, which use a similar menu system as the SQ series (which I own and use SQ6 FOH, and SQ5 on monitors), as with all desks the work flow is key to being comfortable, and attaing the mix the band, producer, and engineer are looking for in the short time the engineer has during sound check. Why use a Dante card, i have no idea unless i was setting up a recording studio, i use Giga Ace expansion card in the monitor desk to send digital signal up 100 meters to the FOH desk, and a waves expansion card in the FOH desk for the FX engine (beats carrying the 3 or 4 30 U cases of FX we used to have with us). USB, ok again i have access to 32 channels via usb on the SQ, but i would only use this to direct out the inputs to, if the band wanted it, or i wanted it for a mini tour, so i could virtual sound check. Anything bigger than that and i use waves which is 96k and latency free over the waves network (none of this is rocket science), and is the professional approch to the business. AAM (Automatic Microphone Mixer) Please read the manuel when you buy things, AAM is not for bands, its for conferences where multiple omni directional microphones are use and piped through the room speakers in the confrence suit, so people dont have to shout, and where multiple microphones such as presenter microphones, or podium microphones are used. Again misinterpretation of equiptmen feachers just shows a lack of understanding as to what that feature is for (I dont think ive ever heard a studio engineer use an AAM……..EVER!). Do your research, but do it sensably, read as much as you can, and if in doubt ask the manufacturer, but please dont listern to people who just want to trash a product because they “failed" to do their research properly.

Ridculous! You're reviewing a console, and you never speak about the only thing which really matters: SOUND! It's easy to understand why: the SQ is one of the best sounding desk for 2023, and at this price, it's amazing!! I'm a pro sound engineer for 40 years now, studio and live: I used SSL, MCI, Neve, Harrison, etc in the studio, and CL, QL (panfry sounding Yamaha desks), M32 (clever one, but the sound worth the price, not more), Midas Pro Series (yes!, but not easy to set up quickly), Digico (great sound, but not reliable, better to have a spare desk ...), Soundcraft (only Vi series are not ridiculous, ...when they're working!), iLive (what changed my opinion on A&H), dLive (my favourite!), Avantis (mmmh, we can speak on this one...), and SQ mainly for FOH, and sometimes monitors. This desk is and will stay one of my favourite. Sound must be 90% of your decision if you're serious, and only SSL Live, DLive, or Digico can compare to this one, for 10x the money!! If you can't adapt your workflow to a desk, if you MUST use a graphic instead of param on inputs, if you find groups complicated to set up and mix with, maybe you should change job! What you're pointing on SQ is really not a big problem, and it's ordinary adaptation for a professional practice. And you didn't ever speak about what is the main default of SQ: choose an USB drive for this desk is a kind of lottery: too much USB keys or hard disks are not recognized... Your idea is good: too much reviews are just advertizing, and never look for defaults. But you choosed a bad one! :D Much more things to say about CL series or Wing for example... ;)

Thank your for your input here. I think it's important to get great sound, and to get it quickly. My experience is that I get GREAT sound with every console i've ever used, including the LS9 and behringer x32. I had great sound with the SQ7 as well. The issue i feel is more about console makers putting many "hidden gotcha's" to ruin a good mixing experience. the strange behavior of the PFL when the automixer is set to "follow-fader" on the SQ7 is a perfect example of a hidden gotcha that I wouldnt expect from any other brand

    • @cd2982
      @cd2982 6 месяцев назад

@@completelybiasedaudiorevie661 If you don't find a difference beetween the sound of a LS9 and a SQ, if you use "automix" and if you're unable to adapt to any console workflow, we definitely don't do the same job! Sorry to be a bit rude, but your video seems to suggest SQ series are nearly unusable in a pro rig. Alas, every pro sound engineers I know (and I know a lot of them!) who tried it love it! So, if your goal is to make educationnal video, you're doing a very bad thing in advising to not use a console that at least 90% of live sound industry actors admit to be one of the best in the range. If your goal is to advertize for other brands, you're successfull, but you should be honnest, and tell it. Maybe you should explain what is your intention: debate? provoke? educate? In any case, i don't feel it productive or usefull...

I don’t like the standard channel compressor on this console. It never sounds right. 50 millisecond release is not fast enough for parallel compression on drums. I find myself using attack and release times I would never do on any other console just to get a usable sound. It always sounds weird to me. Love the channel compressor on the Dlive, m32, sd9 etc. It’s somehow not musical on this console. It always sounds digitally harsh and too slow. Not a huge fan of the compressor pack either besides the desser. The 1176 also doesn’t sound quite right on parallel drums or as an emulation of an 1176. For instants waves 1176 sounds much better I used the old dbx160 on the masterbus last night and kind of liked it but it was set to not compress at all. Like no meter movement and 2:1 It did help with some peaks helped the mix gel slightly. The opto just sounds really jumpy and digital it never sounds natural I always like it better when I turn it off. But other wise great console cant beat the I/O and routing for the price.
