Display Tank Salvage Op
My six-year-old display tank reached the end of the road and was starting to depress me. It was badly in need of a re-scape, but I kept putting it off because I couldn't decide what to do next. When I couldn't stand it any more, I decided to make some small changes so it would be more in line with my interest in breeding and less of an eyesore. To be continued...

How to Culture Infusoria: Take 3
Просмотров 16 тыс.2 года назад
How to culture infusoria? Again?! I know, I just can't seem to shut up about infusoria. But this will be the last time, I promise [fingers crossed]. Nick, from Keeping Fish Simple, recently shared a method for culturing infusoria that looked fast and easy, so I just had to give it a try. And I was blown away by the results. I hope a few of my viewers find it useful, and thanks a bunch to Nick f...
Breeding Pygmy Corydoras: 8-Week Update
Просмотров 3 тыс.3 года назад
After a year and a half of celibacy, my Pygmy Corydoras finally started breeding. Here's an 8-week update video describing what's happened since the spawning began. I must admit that the spontaneous propagation occurring in the tank produced far more than my modest attempts at controlled rearing. I'm overrun with juvenile Pygmy Corydoras!
Say It's Not True, Jay! SunSun Canister Filter Mothballed

I never thought the day would come, but I've retired my beloved SunSun HW 303-B canister filter. I didn't mean to. Honest! It just happened. All it took was a stubborn case of bio-film and one thing just led to another. Hopefully, I'll be happy with my new squeeze. Pygmy Corydoras Breeding!!
Просмотров 9 тыс.3 года назад
My Pygmy Corydoras started breeding and laying eggs after almost eighteen months of no activity. I'd given up on them and was making plans to sell them and try breeding a different type of fish. After being out of the country for three weeks, I came back, resumed water changes and feeding live food, and now they're laying eggs all over the place. I even spotted some juveniles in the main tank t...
Vinegar Eels Recover
Просмотров 5453 года назад
When I left town for three weeks, my vinegar eel cultures were in a sorry state, none of them looking healthy, let alone producing enough for harvesting, and I had no idea how to fix the problem. When I returned, all the cultures were thriving and ready to harvest, except for the newest ones. I have no idea what turned things around, but I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth.
Aaak!!! Vinegar Eels Problem
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.3 года назад
Vinegar eels are normally super simple to culture and maintain. I usually have more than I can possibly use. But for the last two or three months, mine have been dying off, and all my attempts to start new healthy cultures have failed. What's going on?

Good news, no news and worrisome news. Let me know if you see something that could help me be more successful with my propagation projects.
Fish Room Update
Просмотров 1583 года назад
Not much has changed except that I'm switching my tanks to black water so I had to set up a bigger reservoir to prep water changes. I also have a small work surface which is very handy, and I set up a 10-gallon in preparation for my Asian Stone Catfish.
Fish Room Tour

Having a dedicated fish room is not something I would have allowed myself to hope for, but the opportunity arose and I seized it. There wasn't a lot of planning involved (red flag right there lol) and it remains a work in progress but I'm so happy to have all my aquarium stuff in one room. I hope you enjoy my fish room tour.
Huijukon Dual Sponge Filter Modification

When I installed the Huijukon dual sponge filter I was disappointed to see rather large air bubbles being produced in the central lift tube. Here's my simple modification to allow the use of an air stone.
API Rena Filstar XP Review

White Cloud Mountain Minnow Tub Breeding Debrief
Просмотров 9934 года назад
I tore down my White Cloud Mountain Minnow tub, yesterday. The results are pretty disappointing. These egg layers are supposed to be the equivalent of guppies in terms of ease of breeding. The fact that I can't manage it is a bit of a blow to my ego. Hopefully my experience will be educational for more talented up-and-coming breeders of White Cloud Mountain Minnows.

2021 Update: I strongly recommend watching this updated version instead. ruclips.net/video/hw7Wc77jiSs/видео.html One last update on my most recent attempt to culture infusoria. I think I FINALLY got the hang of it lol. The culture never really got clear and turned an interesting shade of brown, but I've got cooties, and that's all that matters when you're trying to culture infusoria for breedi...

How I Breed Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnows
I used Nick's method but I also used too much yeast the first time. It smelled like I had started a brewery in my house
Nice
Well I’ve just watched a video stating that Katie Perry has taken over braggs and many ppl are complaining that it has been watered down, also if you look on the back of the recent dated bottles you will see water has been added so I think this answers your problem!!!!!!
If you have a sweet tooth and are likely to keep drinking that sugar water you should watch the video i just watched glucose godess on diary of a ceo podcast. Great channel if you haven't heard of it . Basically your sweet tooth is lining you up for dementia Alzheimer's.
Great video, after two weeks I was thinking of throwing mine because of the smell, but I will persevere 👍 thanks for the great video 👏
@@wriga007 Thanks, but make sure you’ve tried this approach, if you haven’t already. ruclips.net/video/hw7Wc77jiSs/видео.htmlsi=dEvH-11ihwj0VmT3 it’s way, way better than what I was doing in the first infusoria videos.
1:33 Snails eat eggs don't they
@@stephenblack8698 the general consensus seems to be that they will eat eggs. I’ve had some success despite the presence of snails but then I’ve had some failures that might be blamed on snails.
@@jaymiller3238 Thanks! I also read that white clouds don't eat their fry. Then some say they do. I'm hoping to breed some in a planted tank with caves.
You still around Jay ? It's been a long time. Hope you are OK.
Jay, I enjoyed your video thoroughly!! ❤ I have a very small pond in my backyard and purchased 20 minnows as a tester before I spent money on more expensive fish. After adding a lily plant, I experienced a long bout of uncontrollable algae. After finding the correct treatment the water became clear and I noticed little tiny creatures swimming amongst the plants. They were so small. I couldn't tell if they were larva or fish. Hence I searched for baby minnows on RUclips to compare what I had to a true baby minnow. I still am not sure if I have baby minnows or not, would you mind doing another video with a clear picture of the new hatchlings, and updating the video with segments of their growth stages and get a close-up of each stage?
@@janrdoughs3708 Thanks for your kind words. Newly hatched WCMM fry are so very small, like an eyelash. You might not even see them if they don’t move. Unfortunately, I no longer breed White Clouds since there wasn’t enough demand for the offspring. But if you check my tub breeding video(s) I think there are some shots of the babies, also, there’s a brief shot of some WCMM fry near the beginning of my Infusoria - Take 3 video. I hope that helps, and I hope your fish have lots of babies.
Good vid. Thanx
Thanks for showing how to lock the mud; now please show how to unlatch the lid.
Nice one!
👍👍👍
Temp too cold, or too hot?
Avoid water changes and fish will thrive and breed on their own
What was the first liquid you put in the bottle?
The starter culture containing the live vinegar eels
The channel "Keeping Fish Simple" is excellent.
I've used the 206 for over a decade and from experience, if you fill it with water from your tank first up to the inlet and outlet holes this will help and prevent the need to prime at all. Once turned back on and the bucket pump starts making a sound like it's struggling, then tilt the filter bucket slightly from side to side and this will help the pump draw out the air pockets between the filter media! In relation to the vibration, I have a towel under my filter which sits inside a cabinet my tank sits on. I hope this helps! 4:57
Thank for the tip. I was just struggling with it again, yesterday.
Great video!
can I use green bottle if I don't have a clear one?
I don’t think it will matter since light isn’t important
Beautiful fry!
This method has also worked for me! My cultures take a little longer than the 36 to 48 hour mark, but that’s mostly because I don’t really keep the cultures as warm as a lot of people would want. After a week though I’ve got more Infusoria then I know what to do with! I keep 3 or 4 cultures going at one time too. I do have one question though. Would you continue to add yeast after a lot of the paramecia dissapear from the water?
I tried it once but it’s no easier or quicker than starting a fresh batch
Thank you so much for this video. I snicker every time you call them cooties. Now I feel confident in my ability to culture infusoria. It's amazing how little we know about the natural world and decide to bring nature inside without being prepared. Fortunately, my rainbow fish fry spotted Infusoria on the glass inside my nursery tank because I was nervous as heck that I was going to starve them to death. Again, thanks for the video. Going ahead and subscribing just to hear you say cooties again.
Had my Rena filstar for at least running for15 years for a 200 litre tank they are reliable & efficient filters with good performance One of the best quality
But does it stink? 😜
This is very helpful
Haha. I know this is an old video. But I have been hoping to breed my pygmy corys too. After watching your video I suddenly realised that what I thought were baby cherry shrimp are in fact baby corys! Can't tell you how excited I am. Thank you! 😂
It’s such a great feeling, isn’t it? Wish me luck; I’m making another attempt with a new group.
@@jaymiller3238 🍀🍀🍀👍
What is the shelving shown around the 1 minute mark? It looks great.
The shelving at 01:06 is Gorilla shelving from Costco. The cabinet under the aquarium at 01:07 was purchased with the aquarium from an unknown fish store. It wasn't made specifically for the tank.
Jay did you ever figure out why? Let me know necause mine are cloudy and jave surface scum
No, the problem seemed to resolve itself. Have a look at the comments. Someone said it was a harmless bacteria that shows up in beer brewing and pickling when the temperature goes above 23°C. At the time, my cultures were in the closet of my residence. Since then, they’ve been in the basement and I haven’t had any issues. For what it’s worth…
You did this the natural way (nothing wrong with that, but...) and that is why it took so long. Boost the bacteria bloom with bread yeast. Boost the green water with spirulina. No need for disgusting decaying vegetables and the smell is bearable. 2 days to a week time and you will have a great culture.
Ha ha !! I finally figured it out…😂
Thanks for all the information ✌️
Yep, great idea with the sand on top of it, i ordered 3 20LB bags and Black sand also. I have Hairgrass and Rotala Roundfolia
I heard that WCMM need fresh water and will breed if left over night and as soon as it gets light, did you do any big water changes? I didn't even try and in my aquarium that has lots of things that could eat their eggs I had 3 hatch out from me just doing a 50% water change( my aquarium also has lots of java ferns).
Yup I did 50% water changes weekly
Very informative, thank you.
Is this without starter culture?
I purchased vinegar eels from a local fish keeper in order to get started.
In case you haven't figured it out yet, those are called "Kahm yeast", or so called by us homebrewers and fermented food nerds. Contrary to the name, Kahm are not actually yeast but a few different strains of "harmless" bacteria. They are considered OK to have occasionally in fermented beer, pickles and sauerkraut. Personally I don't like them. I have no clue why they have a detrimental effect on your eel colonies though. Needs separate research. P.s. They usually occur when fermentation temperature is over 23°C. If that helps.
That’s weird how your dark closet turned your square containers into circles! 😂
Really helpful. I will now use bread...subbed! Hi from Singapore!
well done and good on you for shouting out Nick. his channel is eclectic honest and top shelf. You're a mellow easy chatter. Cheers
nice looking fish, i recently bought 15 golden white cloud minnows and only one of the males has this almost orange to red color that your fish are having. I hope to be able to breed from this male or find some other with this color depth.
Good luck with your breeding project. It can be hard to find quality breeding stock. The last time I ordered a group of standard White Clouds they came in mostly bronze with red fins, not the expected silvery blue. SMH
Good advice. Thanks for sharing
Really enjoyed the footage & narration. Beautiful tank full of GW's.
Thanks!
very interesting
I too struggled with this but l believe the key to this is temperature
Perhaps you’re right. My recent consistent results coincide with the use of a warming light-among other things.
Its a good unit. But since purchasing it, I have always had issues with its impeller not working. I replaced the impeller but it still wont run and turn on sometimes.
What kind of fine black sand did you use? Thank you.
It’s been so long ago that I can’t remember. It’s pretty fine-grained
I have used Eco complete many times in the past and never had much success honestly. I have had more success using just plain, inert sad. I use mostly low tech plants, but still. Rotala Indica and Crypt Balansae grow like weeds for me without even doing anything for them, including no root tabs.
It's always great when the simple approaches work well.
Hi, I just bought my first culture and started a few culture. All of which had the same white foam on top. I read ur comments that u went away for 3 weeks and it resolved itself. So does that mean I just leave them aside without doing anything and it should go away? Would appreciate your input because I can’t seem to find any information about this phenomenon
What's a spawning mop?
Those clumps of green yarn you see at 00:55. Think of them as artificial bushes where the fish can deposit eggs. Once the eggs have been laid, the mops can be easily removed before the parents eat the eggs and placed into a separate hatching tank.
High value content sir
