Why are Certain Stimuli Linked to Phobias with Dr. Kate Truitt
Ever wondered why you’re afraid of things like heights or tight spaces? In this psychoeducational video, Dr. Kate Truitt explains that these fears come from our evolutionary past.
Our brains are born with natural fears of certain dangers, like loud noises and creepy crawlies, known as "unconditioned threat stimuli." Dr. Kate Truitt describes how these fears are wired into our brains to keep us safe.
When we develop phobias, it’s often because these threat stimuli are overreacted to by the amygdala. This can make us fear things similar to the original danger, like feeling claustrophobic on a plane.

    Never use the pronoun "we", as it suggests that all people have this problem, and that is not now, or nor as it ever, been the case. People who do have a problem where this subject is concerned, try to hold onto the unholdable, and cannot accept this thing called, natural change. As an example of this, some parents (I didn't say "all") want to keep their children children forever, and insist on trying to run their lives, and some grown sons and daughters don't want to leave the protective bubble of Mommy and Daddy. Lastly, it is actually true that not all change is good (i.e. some forms of social change. These changes are resisted, not out of "close-mindedness" as liberals are so fond of putting it, but because these potential changes are, in fact, immoral, and really don't do humanity any service whatsoever).

    • @DrKateTruitt
      @DrKateTruitt День назад

      One way to talk to your younger self is to start by imagining that younger version of you standing in front of you. Close your eyes, take some deep breaths, and visualize them clearly. Then, speak to them with compassion and understanding, as if you’re comforting a dear friend. You can say things like, “I see you,” “You did the best you could,” or “I’m proud of you.” This can be a powerful practice for healing past wounds and offering your younger self the love and validation they needed. Sending warmth as you explore this. 💗

    I dealt with internalized shame for years. Complete understanding healed me. In hindsight, shame was only trying to call me to reexamine the parts of myself that I had shoved away because it was too painful. Without the shame I wouldn’t have been inclined to reexamine. What we consider a little pest in our brain in the moment is actually one of the most beautiful gifts calling us to a higher level of self understanding, self love, integrity, and most of all self respect. Respect in Latin means to re-see, to take another look. Forgiveness is easy and natural when you see yourself for who you are.
